Alice Walker: The Siege of Gaza Is An Attack on the Common Heart
Tue, Apr 28, 2009 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
First Congregational Church of Oakland
2501 Harrison St
Oakland

The world famous novelist and poet Alice Walker reflects on her recent visit to Gaza in a deeply thoughtful interview with Malihe Razazan, producer and co-host of KPFA's "Voices of the Middle East and North Africa." Introduced by Penny Rosenwasser, of the Middle East Children's Alliance.

"Going to Gaza was our opportunity to remind the people of Gaza and ourselves that we belong to the same world: the world where grief is not only acknowledged, but shared; where we see injustice and call it by its name; where we see suffering and know the one who stands and sees is also harmed, but not nearly so much as the one who stands and sees and says and does nothing." -Alice Walker

Alice Walker received the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 for The Color Purple. Among her numerous other awards and honors are the Lillian Smith Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rosenthal Award from the National Institute of Arts & Letters, a nomination for the National Book Award, a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship, a Merrill Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Front Page Award for Best Magazine Criticism from the Newswoman's Club of New York. She also has received the Townsend Prize and a Lyndhurst Prize. Among her many popular books are: Possessing the Secret of Joy, We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For, and Why War Is Never a Good Idea.
