MICROSOFT LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE PHONE STACK
In a keynote at this week's Mobile World Congress, CEO Steve Ballmer
unveiled an interim upgrade to Microsoft's mobile phone stack. To ship
during the latter half of the year, Windows Mobile 6.5 brings support
for two online services, including an app store and a data sync/backup
service.

HTC REVS FLAGSHIP WINDOWS MOBILE PHONES
HTC has announced two new Windows phones with WVGA displays, enhanced
TouchFlo 3D software, and touch-sensitive "zoom bars." The Touch
Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 (left) have 528MHz processors, dual cameras,
GPS, WiFi, FM receivers, and ambient light sensors.

ACER PHONES HAVE "3D" WIDGETS
Acer announced two new Windows phones, plus an overall brand for its
smartphone product line. The latest entries in the "Tempo" series are
the F900 and M900, which offer 3.8-inch WVGA displays, GPS, HSUPA/HSDPA,
and home screens with "3D" widgets.

ACER SMARTPHONE SPORTS DUAL SCREENS
Two new Acer smartphones have been revealed ahead of next week's Mobile
World Congress (MWC). The double-sided DX650 (left) features a 2.8-inch
QVGA touchscreen and a supplementary OLED (organic light-emitting diode)
display, while the X960 has a single VGA display, says Vietnamese news
site Tinhte.com.

WINDOWS PHONE IS CREDIT-CARD SIZED
I-mate is using this week's Mobile World Congress (MWC) to show several
interesting prototypes, including a smartphone the size of a credit
card. The "Centurion" (left) will run Windows Mobile 6.5, has a full
QWERTY keyboard, and will offer GSM cellular connectivity, according to
several reports.

RUGGED WINDOWS PHONE TARGETS ADVENTURERS
i-Mate announced a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone designed to meet
MIL-STD-810F standards for resistance to liquids and dust. The
appropriately named "810-F" includes 2.2GB of storage, a 320 x 240
touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, GPS, and a "digital compass" feature.

WINDOWS PHONE HAS DUAL KEYBOARDS
AT&T has announced a novel Windows Mobile 6.1 phone with two slide-out
keyboards. The Pantech Matrix Pro (left) runs Windows Mobile 6.1, and
provides worldwide 3G operation, HSDPA/HSUPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA (320x240)
display, and a two megapixel camera.

WINDOWS PHONE OFFERS ADVANCED NAVIGATION
Garmin and Asus announced a cobranded Windows smartphone that geo-tags
photos, gives turn-by-turn directions, and offers location-aware social
networking applications. The Nuvifone M20 includes a 2.8-inch VGA
display, WiFi, Bluetooth, a three megapixel camera, and 4GB or 8GB of
flash storage.

LG PROMISES BEVY OF WINDOWS PHONES
LG will "dramatically increase" the number of Windows phones it sells,
it said. The Korean consumer electronics giant also announced a new
LG-GM730 phone running Windows Mobile 6.5, and featuring a custom
"S-Class" user interface, 400 x 240 touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, and a five
megapixel camera.

HANDHELD DEV PLATFORM SUPPORTS WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5
Texas Instruments (TI) announced an MDP (mobile development platform)
using its OMAP3430 applications processor. Available with a Windows
Mobile 6.5 BSP (board support package), the "Zoom OMAP34x-II" includes a
4.1-inch multi-touch display, eight megapixel camera, GPS, HDMI output,
and a forthcoming pico projection module.

OPEN-SOURCE HARDWARE CLUB SHIPS GUMSTIX HANDHELD
An open source hacker community has launched an online store selling
home-made gizmos, including a GPS-equipped baseboard (pictured) for the
Windows CE-ready Gumstix Verdex processor module. GizmoForYou builds
custom gadgets according to members suggestions, and sells the open-spec
devices online.

TI UNVEILS OMAP4
TI (Texas Instruments) plans to begin sampling its next-generation
mobile applications processors in the second half of the year, it
announced. OMAP4 chips will feature dual, SMP-capable ARMv7-based cores,
along with C64x DSPs, multi-format hardware accelerators, a
"programmable" graphics engine, and an "image signal processor" (ISP).

ARM SOCS TARGET PHONES, NETBOOKS
Qualcomm has announced four new mobile chipsets, three with Scorpion
cores based on ARM Ltd.'s ARMv7 architecture. The ARM11-based MSM7227
targets sub-$150 smartphones running Windows Mobile, while the
Scorpion-based MSM8260, MSM8660, and MSM8270 target high-end devices
with HD video.

MICROSOFT DETAILS ESC WEST EVENTS
