Arthritis isn't a single disease -- it comprises over 100 different diseases and conditions. Statistics related to arthritis prevalence reveal over 1 in 5 American adults have arthritis. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joints. Overlapping symptoms can make diagnosis of arthritis difficult, but each type has prominent characteristics. The most common types are osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Some forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, can affect multiple organs and cause widespread symptoms.
