World Debate: Climate Watch |
| |
Scientists have confirmed the new realities and threats from climate change and global warming. In the developed world, the pressure is mounting to make sacrifices to become 'carbon neutral' by modifying economic activity and consumer lifestyles dramatically. There is a similar pressure for carbon neutrality in the developing world, but how do these people adapt their lifestyles to become carbon neutral and economically viable when the basic challenge is often for daily survival? In The World Debate as part of the Climate Watch season, presenter Nik Gowing (pictured) moderates a debate recorded in Delhi discussing the contrasting pressures on citizens and consumers from the developed and developing world. Among the guests on the panel are Suruchi Bhadwal, TERI (the TATA Environment Research Institute), Delhi; Malini Mehra, founder and director, Centre for Social Markets; Pramod Chaudhari, founder and chairman, PRAJ, (developers of biofuel technology), Pune, India; Alok Sharma, president, Air Sahara; and Mike Wilkinson, vice president sustainable development, Shell International.

Have Your Say |
| |
It's 27 years since Zimbabwe broke away from colonial rule and President Mugabe has led the country ever since. Inflation is running at about 2000 per cent and 80 per cent of the workforce is unemployed. There are chronic shortages of fuel, food and foreign exchange, and in the past month a national strike and an opposition prayer meeting have been stopped by violent police action. President Mugabe is under increasing pressure from the EU and foreign governments while calls for change are growing louder in South Africa. Presenter Allan Little leads the discussion on this week's multimedia programme Have Your Say, with studio guest Wilf Mbanga (pictured), editor of The Zimbabwean newspaper published in the UK.
