REVIEW: A+
The NSF Multimedia Gallery is a rich resource for science teachers looking to enrich their science curriculum. The multimedia offerings cover such topics as astronomy and space, biology, Artic and Antarctic, computing, earth and environment, nanoscience, and more. Users can take a look at a fossil that might represent the first vertebrate to emerge from the ancient seas, learn how scientists are turning forest-industry waste into fuel and other products, view a video about “nature’s superglue” produced by aquatic bacteria or learn about the most efficient ways to move in the water by viewing “Teaching Robots to Swim.” This is a site you will want to bookmark and return to often.

REVIEW: A+
Give your brain a workout at the Gymnasium for the Brain. Children and adults can have fun solving these puzzles while exercising their brains. Visitors to the site can find more than one hundred and eighty logic puzzles that will keep them entertained for hours. Each puzzle includes hints and the solution. Teachers can use these logic puzzles as brain teasers to start the day or for rainy day activities. The site also provides math problems and alternative ways of solving them, and a section on designing using dots and patterns that students would find interesting. Additionally, try your hand at the upcoming puzzles for a little brain exercise with no hints or solutions available.

  • Each week, Education World spotlights books of interest to educators. This week, read a brief summary of two more of our "top 50 books for educators."

    Inside Mrs. B's Classroom
Leslie Baldacci was a journalist who took the stories about the crisis in urban education very seriously, choosing to teach on Chicago's South Side. Like Jonathan Kozol, Baldacci is a writer who has the power to touch a reader emotionally, along with the reporter's discipline with details. Also like a journalist, Baldacci delivers her story in digestible short chapters that suit the free time teachers have to read.

Papers, Papers, Papers: An English Teacher's Survival Guide
Many people who aren't teachers often say they couldn't do the job because they'd have "all those papers to grade." Of course, the art teacher may not have them, but the English teacher in middle school and especially in high school certainly has a carload of papers to grade. This book addresses this challenge not only with practical tips, but also with broader professional development ideas, so that the reader not only gets help with the paper load, but can actually become a more effective coach for young, aspiring (or reluctant) literary critics.

LEAVE 'EM LAUGHING
==========================================================================

Little Johnny...

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. "Why do you do that, Mommy?" he asked.

"To make myself beautiful," said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.

"What's the matter?" asked Little Johnny. "Giving up?"

More from Darling Little Johnny...

Little Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures of the "Ten Most Wanted" criminals tacked to a bulletin board. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person.

"Yes," said the policeman. "The detectives want very badly to capture him."

Little Johnny asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture?"

Last Laughs

Teacher: Isn't it remarkable how quickly kids learn to drive a car?
Parent: Yes, especially considering how slowly they catch on to running the lawn mower and vacuum cleaner.

Student: Dad, can you help me find the lowest common denominator in this math problem?
Father: Don't tell me that they haven't found it yet! I remember looking for it when I was in school.
