Survivor's Guide: Against The Odds Revisited |
|
|
| |
This programme follows the remarkable story of a Masai woman, Kakenya Ntaiya, who grew up barefoot and often hungry, betrothed at five and circumcised at 14. She broke with tradition, however, and travelled to the United States where she was educated and is now studying for her second degree. Kakenya's story was first told in BBC World's acclaimed series, Survivor's Guide, in September 2006. Since then, she has been a guest at the Fortune 500 convention in Las Vegas - a gathering of some of the most powerful and influential women in the world. She has also caught the attention of Hilary Clinton and is now being seen as a new and important role model for young women around the world. The programme follows Kakenya on her trips to Las Vegas and Washington, as she pursues her ambition to help provide better schooling and education for all the children in her home village.

Child protection agencies say that in the last two years more than a thousand children have arrived in Barcelona in search of the European dream. The local government has provided shelter for three hundred of them, but more than a third of these are still roaming free, sniffing glue, selling their bodies or stealing and mugging. This programme travels to Tangiers with 20-year-old Muad, who arrived in Spain hiding under a coach when he was 13. He shows reporters the dangerous route taken by many Moroccan children. The film features interviews with other children and their families, NGOs, Moroccan authorities and academics to discover why children risk life and limb to ride to Europe.

This week, fast:track reports from Jamaica - a country that no longer wants to depend on tourism for its economic livelihood. Instead, Jamaica is aiming for increased economic investment, although if the tourism authorities do continue pushing the island as relaxed, it will be difficult to encourage business investment in the country. fast:track's Simon Hancock explores the efforts made through music and the hosting of the Cricket World Cup to change the nation's image, from 'easy skankers' to hard workers, and meets some of the island's many talented individuals and entrepreneurs along the way.
