Outdoor Ed News: Is your Water Bottle Dangerous?
This is a question that has been floating out there, largely unanswered, for many years and has generated a lot of debate on both sides of the issue. The concern about the use of polycarbonate water bottles is over the Food and Drug Administration approved chemical Bisphenol-a (BPA) which is used in a number of plastics including polycarbonate water bottles from such manufacturers as Nalgene. The concern is that BPA can leach from the insides of the bottle over time. This issue is back in the news with the announcement that Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) in Canada is removing all polycarbonate products from its shelves (New York Times - December 8, 2007) pending the results from Health Canada study to be released in May 2008 . While this announcement generated some backlash from the manufacturing industry about the safety of these products, the jury is still out on the research end. Find out more about BPA.
