NEW RELEASES
A 'Curious Case' Indeed
'Curious Case of Benjamin Button'/Paramount Pictures Ann Hornaday admires the technical wizardry in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," but says all its alleged life lessons don't add up to much: "When all the dazzling visuals have subsided, when audiences are left with the movie's tagline ringing mawkishly in their ears and puzzled thoughts about what they just saw, they might be forgiven for concluding that they didn't see much of anything."

Cruise Carries Off 'Valkyrie'
'Valkyrie'/United Artists Despite Tom Cruise and his eye patch, Philip Kennicott says "Valkyrie" is pretty thrilling. But it's also troubling: "'Valkyrie' is so austere, so strangely inhuman in its depiction of heroism, that you can't help but admire it as an entertainment juggernaut, and fret about it, too, for its celebration of a very limited ideal of human behavior."

"Even dog lovers may want to take 'Marley & Me' to the pound. Based on the best-selling book by John Grogan, which chronicled his life with a large, lovable and deeply neurotic dog, 'Marley & Me' proves the obvious: Not every book has a movie lurking in it."

-- Philip Kennicott on 'Marley & Me'

Columnist Jane Horwitz says some kids may giggle at Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories." But that hardly makes it a great film.
