Rotosound Re-Releases Billy Sheehan Signature String Set
The
legendary rock god’s custom string set, gauged .043, .065, .080, .110,
is just beginning to hit shelves in its new packaging. “Rotosound
Strings are an essential part of my playing,” says Sheehan. “Their
organic feel and supremely rich harmonic content give every single note
a unique character. Harmonics come effortlessly singing off the
strings, and low notes have a depth and conviction like no other. They
bring out the best of every bass, amplifier, and effect combination,
retaining their tonality through the most complex, as well as the
simplest signal chains. I recommend Rotosound Strings to players
everywhere.”

Nick Wilkinson Hits The Ground with The Pretenders
After barely a year on the road as the “new guy” in the Pretenders, Nick Wilkinson was taken aback when singer Chrissie Hynde asked him what he thought about doing a country album. “I laughed at first,” the Brit-born bassist recalls, “but then I thought it might be pretty cool. She’s got the voice for it, you know? We got Jim Keltner on drums, went into Sage & Sound studio in L.A., and banged out an album in ten days.” Read on!
Rocco Prestia On How To Play “You’re Still A Young Man” by Tower Of Power
Rocco Prestia came by the BASS PLAYER offices to shoot a segment for bassplayer.tv, but his best advice flowed forth right after the camera switched off. “Steal and incorporate,” he stressed in his raspy whisper, noting that copping another player’s approach is an exercise best used for refining your own style. “Guys sometimes come up and tell me, ‘I can play such-n-such a Tower Of Power song note for note.’ But who cares? If you can’t play it like you, it ain’t worth nothing.” Check out the video.

20 Years Of Gear: A Look Back At Bass Player Product Coverage
The bass guitar is nearly 60 years old. In “instrument years,” that makes it a mere adolescent; most others were well into their second or third century long before electricity had anything to do with music. But the bass is precocious; within it, technological progress intersects with pop music’s vital experimentalism, and the result is an instrument in ever-accelerating flux. BASS PLAYER has tracked the bass’s progress for a full third of this existence, and given the exponential curve of technological growth, this period has been the most exciting. Read all about it!
Retro-Rama: 1983 G&L L-2000
After Leo Fender left Music Man in late 1979, it didn’t take long before he was back in action—this time with old friends George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt, and a new company, G&L. Having essentially invented the modern electric bass, Leo could have remained content with his legacy, but was driven to develop his new ideas. He worked tirelessly on them until the day he died in 1991, and we bassists owe Leo a huge debt for his contributions. Check out this latter-day Fender/Fullerton invention.
