THIS WEEK'S SNEAK PEEK IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY WPAS

A Better Alternative

Elections are natural emotional rollercoasters, plunging from heady heights to profound lows. For the GBLT community, 2008 was particularly high -- and painfully low. Even as Barack Obama became the first African-American to be elected to the presidency, Florida and Arizona voters approved amendments banning same-sex marriage and Arkansas took the retrograde step of effectively barring adoption and foster-parenting by gays and lesbians, to say nothing of the passage of Calfornia's Proposition 8. We asked the leaders of a number of national GLBT and HIV/AIDS organizations their thoughts on the new administration, what the community can achieve, and what the victory of anti-gay campaigns across the country means for the GLBT movement.

Challenging Proposition 8
In the wake of Californians voting to pass Proposition 8, a constitutional ban on same-sex marriages that trumps an earlier California Supreme Court ruling that extended equal marriage rights to gays and lesbians, there's a common question being asked -- including by locals who made the trek west to tie the knot: Are those marriages still valid? By Yusef Najafi

The GLBT Beat
A recent string of attacks against members of the gay community has rekindled the dormant organization Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV), which was active through the 1990s. By Yusef Najafi

UHU Turns 20
Us Helping Us, People Into Living Inc., will soon mark 20 years of working to prevent HIV infections among black gay and bisexual men, and caring for those who are infected. An anniversary banquet on Nov. 21 marks the day the organization incorporated in 1985. By Will O'Bryan

DOMESTIC PARTNER
Stuck on You by Doug Rule
It's not easy or cheap, and there can be complications, but there are safe ways to remove that old, unwanted tattoo. However, just as you shouldn't have rushed into getting a tattoo, you shouldn't rush into removing it.

TiguanTiguan On by Sean Bugg
The word that pops to mind most often these days about the Volkswagen line of Rabbits and Passats and Beetles and Touregs is "nifty." Volkswagen's new entry into small-to-midsize SUV market, the Tiguan, carries on that same niftiness in a scaled-down version of the popular Toureg.
