Dear Readers,
As many of you already know, my children collect
picture postcards. Their current postcard Wish List
includes the following: The Eiffel Tower, other countries
(especially European), state or national capitol buildings,
and anything having to do with Japan and China.
My children's postcard collection is a valuable educational
tool we've been using for many years. Whenever a new
card arrives, we go to the globe or a world map and look
at where the card originated. If it's an area the kids aren't
familiar with, we pull out our encyclopedia and read a bit
about the state/city/country. This has been the beginning
of many fascinating educational discussions. And it's so
fun -- the kids never feel they're doing "education" at all!
If any Bright-Kids subscribers would like to send postcards
to three very appreciative young people (and their mom!),
my children would be absolutely thrilled! By the way, they're
equally excited about ANY picture postcards they receive,
even if the postcards aren't about something on their Wish
List. So if you feel inspired to send one, please feel free!
If you'd like to participate in helping to build their collection,
send postcards to:

If you or your children are interested in starting your own
postcard collection, a simple way to do this is to drop a
note to friends and family in other areas and ask them if
they'd like to participate in an educational project with your
children by sending picture postcards that represent their
local community or area of the world.
In a similar project my friend, Laura C., and her children
collected postcards from all fifty U.S. states simply by
contacting the people on their Christmas card list. With
the letter to their friends, Laura included three additional
envelopes (stamped but unaddressed) containing similar
letters telling about their family's educational project and
asking for postcards. Their friends could then forward the
additional envelopes/letters to three of their extended
family or friends.
Laura's family talked with the local public library and were
able to set up their postcard collection of all fifty states in
a display cabinet in the library's foyer one month. Many
local and state fairs also have areas for displaying personal
collections if your children would be interested in sharing
their collection with others.

QUOTABLE
" 'The mother who takes pains to endow her children with
good habits secures for herself smooth and easy days;
while she who lets their habits take care of themselves has
a weary life of endless friction with the children ... The mother
devotes herself to the formation of one habit at a time,' and
to watching 'over those already formed.' Mother will pick up
the habit of training her children in good habits. It will get
easier. Some habits children will naturally pick up through
our examples. Others require training."

GEOGRAPHY COMES HOME
Used with permission. All rights reserved.
Activity: "Geography Comes Home"
Ages: Preschool to adult
The following is an activity that's fun for all ages (even mom
and dad!). All you need is:
--one large world map
--paper
--color pencils
--push pins
1) Collect some items from around your house and find where
they are from. Draw a small picture of that item and place it on
your world map.
2) When you come home from the grocery store read the labels
and find out where things are from. Your olive oil is from Italy,
your bananas from Equador.
3) Draw a tiny picture and pin it to your map.
You and your child will learn the locations of many countries
as well as the different products they make and grow.

READER TIPS
Submitted by Bright-Kids' readers. Share your favorite family
educational tips by emailing Debi at: DSimple@aol.com
== Fine Motor Skills Idea ==
I covered a coffee can with contact paper, being careful
it went over the top and then I folded it about 2-inch down
inside. I cut a circular hole out of the lid (by using extra
lids, you can vary the size of the holes -- depending on
your child's age/ability) and use it for my girls to increase
their fine motor skills. The old-fashioned clothes pins can
be put through the slot, making a gleefully satisfying noise
as they hit the bottom of the can. As my girls grew, they
also began removing the lid to line up the clothespins,
around the rim, and making a choo-choo train that was
equally thrilling. Cheap fun!

== Simple Living for Life Skills Development ==
Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that your book
on simple living, A Simple Choice: A Practical Guide to
Saving Your Time, Money and Sanity, is now on my "must
read" list for my older children before they leave home. We
have 15 children in our blended family -- seven are home
schooled -- and this book is great preparation for adult life.
Keep up the good work and all that you share.
