"Pussy-Foot" Was NEVER Dale Earnhardt's Nickname!
by: Robyn Snell
So David Gilliland got parked for ramming ol' Juan Pablo Montoya into the wall nose first after a few laps of good ol' bumpin and banging? I agree with Dale Earnhardt Jr. that this was not the best solution for the issue at hand, but how did Dale Earnhardt Sr. get the name Intimidator? It sure wasn't by pussy-footing around the race track letting guys plow all over him…

Logano out of the #20..before he gets in? UPDATE denied: Let's start the [ESPN] blog with a bang and throw out the latest rumor going around the Cup garage area. Will plans to have rookie Joey Logano replace Tony Stewart next season in the #20 Toyota change? Speculation is Joe Gibbs Racing officials are trying to work out a deal to get #1-Martin Truex Jr. from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to drive the #20 car next year. If JGR can't get Truex, they might make a run at #2-Kurt Busch, who wants out of his deal with Penske Racing.
A quick warning: Rumors are rampant these days in NASCAR because of the difficult economic times. So here's another rumor: JGR president J.D. Gibbs is expected to arrive at Phoenix today and possibility address this issue to deny all of it. The Logano/Truex gossip started because of DEI's tenuous situation right now on sponsorship, and growing concerns that the 18-year-old Logano might not be ready to race Cup full-time next year. But Home Depot, primary sponsor for the #20 Camry, already has invested tons of money in a marketing campaign for Logano [as well as diecast's with Motorsports Authenics, see an image of the #20 Home Depot/Logano scheme on my 2009 #20 Team Schemes page].(ESPN blog)(11-8-2008)
UPDATE denied: Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs reiterated on Saturday that Joey Logano will drive the #20 Toyota in 2009. "Everything he's done up to now he's done exceptionally well," Gibbs said. "When you get to this level, everybody is really good." Logano has failed to finish on the lead lap in the three Cup races he's run this season, which has left the rookie with an average showing of 37th. In last Sunday's Dickie's 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, he was unable to maintain minimum speed on the racetrack. But NASCAR still allowed Logano to compete. "We threatened him within an inch of his life — just finish the race," Gibbs joked. "It's just going to take time."(FoxSports)(11-9-2008) Comment here

Latest merger rumors: DEI picked up the 2009 option on #1-Martin Truex's contract in August, but another rumor floating through the garage is that Bass Pro Shops, the primary sponsor of Truex's car at DEI, may join Stewart-Haas Racing next year as the second sponsor for #39-Ryan Newman [Burger King is another rumored sponsor]. DEI has discussed merger possibilities with Chip Ganassi Racing and Petty Enterprises.(ESPN blog)
Jayski update in mergers: hearing the possible DEI/Ganassi merger is not off [as was posted Friday, see #41 Team News page for the rumor] and is actually close to being done with Ganassi being the team 'presence' at the track with the deal waiting on GM's [Chevy] approval. As for the Petty/DEI rumor? the manufacturer differences squashed that deal as Petty Enterprises would not switch to Chevy and DEI would not switch to Dodge.(11-8-2008)
MORE - Ganassi talks: Chip Ganassi started 2008 with three Cup cars, but shut down the #40 team when no sponsor could be found. Reed Sorenson will leave the #41 after the end of this year to go to Gillett Evernham Motorsports, and even though Target is returning as that team's sponsor no driver for 2009 has been named. Texaco/Havoline is also out after this year on the #42 driven by Juan Pablo Montoya, leaving that team with only half of next year's races sponsored - at least so far. Now, one of the hottest rumors in the NASCAR garage is that Ganassi is talking to Dale Earnhardt Inc., Petty Enterprises and perhaps others about possible affiliations or mergers for 2009 and beyond. "Some of the rumors are true," Ganassi said. "Some of the rumors are not." He also said "we're just waiting for a few other shoes to drop before we nail down a driver for the 41." While he wouldn't speak to further specifics, Ganassi said that in general terms racing is battling the same economic issues other businesses are. "Whatever business anybody is in right now, people think it is special for some reason," Ganassi said. "The oil business is special because it's the oil business. The car business is special because it's in Detroit. Racing is special because it's racing."(Charlotte Observer)(11-9-2008) Comment here
BDR unsure of future Cup plans: Car owner Bill Davis [#22 Toyota] has been open to selling part of his team to an investor - or even more - but all he has to show are "a couple of near misses." The economy is making it more difficult to close a deal with banks less likely to lend large sums of money. "Money availability seems to be the problem," he said. With the season coming to a close, Davis is uncertain of his team 's future. He started the year with two cars but Jacques Villeneuve was unable to get sponsorship and the second car quickly went away. Caterpillar leaves as sponsor for Dave B***y's team to join Richard Childress Racing and Davis hasn't found a replacement. " I'm an optimistic person, but I don't know what's going to happen," he said. "It's pretty tough times out here. There are not a lot of sponsors."(Virginian-Pilot)(11-9-2008) Comment here
UPDATE: Bill Elliott said Friday he is open to returning to the Wood Brothers team next season in a part-time role. Team co-owners Eddie and Len Wood remain in discussions with potential sponsors and also in talks about possibly merging with other teams. Their 2009 plans remain up in the air. "I like the group," Elliott said of the Woods' team. "I like all the guys they've put together here. It seems like we've finally got some things working. I'll probably do a little bit [next year], but not a lot. I enjoy the driving part. I just don't like the politics. Ford's been good to me throughout the years. I still see a lot of fans that support me. I still have friends around the country I'm able to go see through this deal."(SceneDaily)(11-8-2008)
UPDATE 2 -- Petty? Wood Brothers Racing is one of many teams in the Sprint Cup garage that’s examining any number of driver/sponsor/partnership options for 2009. One experienced veteran talking to the Wood Brothers about 2009 is Kyle Petty, who isn’t interested in a full-time ride, but would be happy to share driving responsibilities with one or more other drivers. Petty drove for the Wood Brothers from 1985-88, winning two Sprint Cup races and posting 19 top-five finishes. “Who wouldn’t want to drive for the Wood Brothers?” Petty said Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway. “I drove for ‘em before. I like them. They’ve got a little bit of money. There’s a couple of guys who have a little bit of money. And you put one of your deals and one of their deals together, the next thing you know, you’ve got a pretty healthy team.”(Ford Racing)(11-9-2008) Comment here

Saturday Notebook: Stewart Confident Logano Will Improve
Reid Spencer
Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service
AVONDALE, Ariz. (November 8, 2008) -- Joey Logano's first three outings in NASCAR Sprint Cup cars have the rumormongers working overtime.
Logano followed finishes of 32nd at New Hampshire and 39th at Kansas with a 40th-place showing last Sunday at Texas, where he was lapped seven times. His lack of speed has fueled speculation that the 18-year-old phenom might not be ready to make the jump to the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota next season.

I wish we could have brought home a top-10, but hey, we’ll take 11th and our first good finish of the season.” Read more (Penske) (11-09-08)
Nov.9 NASCAR Nationwide Series:AJ Allmendinger led once for five laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in the Hefty Odor Block 200, his first start of the 2008 season. This is the second race Allmendinger has led in eight career NASCAR Nationwide Series starts. He also led once for three laps in the 2007 Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway. Allmendinger is the third different driver in the last three races to claim WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors and the 15th different driver to earn the award this season.UNOFFICIALLY Allmendinger scored a 12th-place finish in today’s race, his best effort in eight Nationwide Series races. UNOFFICIALLY Brad Keselowski clinched the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader award in today’s race at Phoenix. Keselowski leads Joey Logano by two races (7-5) with one race remaining in the 2008 season. By clinching the overall award ($20,000), Keselowski will earn at
least $36,800 from WIX Filters this season. (RaceCamp) (11-09-08)
Nov. 9 NASCAR Nationwide Series: Post-race quotes from Rookie of the year contender CASSILL -finished sixth (top rookie for the race): “That’s what we needed. These guys worked their tails off on this backup car. I can’t thank them enough, everybody at JR Motorsports, National Guard and Hendrick. I just can’t believe this. That’s what we needed. I’m so happy right now.” YOU WENT FROM HAVING AN ACCIDENT IN QUALIFYING TO RUNNING IN THE TOP-10. COMMENT ON THAT RANGE OF EMOTIONS. “That was pretty unbelievable. We did everything we needed to do and it was just a great race overall. You know, I didn’t do anything really spectacular in the car. I just passed everybody when I could pass ‘em and rode when I needed to ride. Brian Campy on the pit box made all the right choices and put us right where we needed to be. Those are the points that we
needed.” COMMENT ON THE INTENSITY OF THAT FINAL RESTART WITH THREE LAPS TO GO. “You gotta go. You race hard and man, I just couldn’t believe that. It was pretty wild.” IS THIS ONE OF THE BEST RACES THAT YOU’VE DRIVEN THIS SEASON? “Yeah, it was definitely a good way to end the season.” YOUR THOUGHTS ON AN OUTSTANDING RUN TODAY. “Just really proud of my guys. Everybody worked really hard on the car and you know I wrecked the car in qualifying and they had to pull out the backup car. Just proud of their hard work and not giving up and really appreciative of the National Guard and JR Motorsports of giving me the opportunity to drive their cars this year. This is my last race with JR Motorsports this year so it’s a good way to end the season I guess. I’m just real proud of everybody. Obviously I think that puts us in a good position to hopefully win rookie of the
year. You know, unfortunately I won’t be driving at Homestead so I’ll kind of be watching Bryan Clauson and hopefully everything works out.” IS IT IMPORTANT TO WIN THE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR TITLE WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO FIND MONEY? “Yeah, absolutely. You know, regardless, the rookie of the year is a very prestigious award, especially with Raybestos being a part of that program for so long. I can remember being a little kid in elementary school and having the title Raybestos Rookie of the Year be a household name to me and something that I kept up on and watched who’d win it. To be in the category of drivers that might win that is a big honor and hopefully that does help with the sponsorship stuff. With the economy the way it is right now it’s tough to find sponsorship and you can see Dale Jr.’s organization is struggling with sponsorship. It’s unfortunate all over but hopefully we can reap the
benefits of rookie of the year.” (RaceCamp) (11-09-08)
Nov.9 NASCAR Nationwide Series:JAMIE MCMURRAY – No. 17 CitiFinancial Ford Fusion – finished 7th–“We had a pretty good car in practice and qualified average. Then it was just too loose the entire race. These races you have to get your adjustments done early. I was scared to have them adjust it too much. We just never caught up to it.” HOW WAS THE VISIBILITY WITH THE SUN SETTING? “Very, very poor. I don’t know why they started the race and try to make it end in the sunset doesn’t makes sense. And they do it every year. It’s almost dangerous to drive down in the first turn like that.” (FordRacing

Harvick wins at Phoenix: Following a wild night for the two point leaders, it was #2-Kevin Harvick who took the checkered flag to win the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix Int'l Raceway. It was Harvick's third win in the trucks, all of them coming at Phoenix. It started off looking to be a very disappointing night for the #33 of Ron Hornaday Jr. following a wreck on the first lap of the race. Running side by side with #51-Kyle Busch going in to turn three, Hornaday got loose, chased the truck up the hill, but was unable to keep it off the wall. Hornaday sustained significant damage, the team made major repairs; when Hornaday returned to the track, he was 29 laps down. But then on lap 87 Johnny Benson got into the #7 of T.J. Bell resulting in major damage to Benson's truck where he also had to go behind the wall to make repairs. The evening was salvaged for Hornaday…only 3 points separate him from Benson…the points race will go down to the wire at Homestead. Rounding out the top ten were; #51-Kyle Busch, #30-Todd Bodine, #16-Brian Scott [career best finish], #5-Mike Skinner, #19-Brian Keselowski, #99-Erik Darnell, #88-Matt Crafton, #14-Rick Crawford, #10-Brendan Gaughan. This just in: The 2008 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship will be decided in the final race of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway after all.
Ron Hornaday Jr. crashed on Lap 1 of the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway Friday night and finished 25th, while Johnny Benson crashed on Lap 87 and finished 26th, one position behind his championship rival. The net result was that Benson's 6-point lead before the race is now a 3-point lead heading into Homestead next week.
And after the Phoenix, the combatants were as baffled by what happened
