"Pussy-Foot" Was NEVER Dale Earnhardt's Nickname!
by: Robyn Snell
So David Gilliland got parked for ramming ol' Juan Pablo Montoya into the wall nose first after a few laps of good ol' bumpin and banging? I agree with Dale Earnhardt Jr. that this was not the best solution for the issue at hand, but how did Dale Earnhardt Sr. get the name Intimidator? It sure wasn't by pussy-footing around the race track letting guys plow all over him…

A Look Back In Talladega Superspeedway History: Bill Elliott - The Qualifying King
Talladega Superspeedway, Press Release
TALLADEGA, Ala. – If some things in life are certain, then from 1985 through 1987 it wasn’t a question of who was going to win the pole at Talladega Superspeedway, it was simply a question of how fast Bill Elliott was going to go when he won it.

Ganassi-DEI Hold Merger Talks
Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and Dale Earnhardt Inc. have entered discussions that could lead to a merger between the two organizations, foxsports.com reported Tuesday. Such a union would bring together the Nos. 41 and 42 cars of Ganassi and the Nos. 1 and No. 8 cars of DEI, according to the report. Juan Montoya drives the No. 42 car, but Ganassi has not named a driver for the No. 41 car. Martin Truex Jr. is the driver of the No. 1 car, and Aric Almirola drives the No. 8, which has not named a sponsor for next year. One of Montoya's current sponsors, Texaco Havoline, will not return to the car next year, but Ganassi has a partial sponsorship locked in with Wrigley's for the No. 42

Johnson needs to average 7th to clich championship: Gutsy strategy earned Carl Edwards the win at the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, and made it difficult for points leader Jimmie Johnson to clinch at Phoenix. Edwards’ victory slashed his deficit to Johnson, who finished 15th, by 77 – from 183 to 106. Johnson needs to leave Phoenix with a 196-point lead over second-place to officially clinch his third consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. In other words, Johnson must beat Edwards by 90 points and third-place Greg Biffle by 52 at Phoenix to clinch (Johnson needs to finish 195 points ahead of Biffle to clinch because he owns the tie-breaker). Jeff Burton, 212 points back in fourth place, can also spoil Johnson’s clinch hopes by getting within that 195-point “magic number.” If Johnson leaves Phoenix with a 162-point lead, he would need only to start the season-finale at Homestead to clinch a championship. Under this scenario, Johnson has to beat Edwards by 56 and Biffle by 18. If Johnson finishes seventh or better in the next two races, he will clinch the title, no matter what any other driver does.(NASCAR PR)(11-2-2008)

Bad Boy Mowers to Sponsor #22 in final two 2008 races: Bill Davis Racing (BDR) announced that Bad Boy Mowers will take over the sponsorship of the #22 Toyota in Sprint Cup Series competition for the final two races of the 2008 season. The two-race sponsorship opportunity comes after BDR bids a final farewell to its long-standing sponsorship with Caterpillar, which began in 1999. “This seems to be the year of change”, said Bill Davis, whose CAT sponsored team won the Daytona 500 in 2002. “That’s the one thing about life and NASCAR, is that you can always count on change. We had a great run with CAT and we are thankful for its sponsorship of our team over the years. My wife and I have made many friendships that will last forever. Our team is happy to have those Bad Boy Mowers come on board for the last two races of 2008. We are heavy into 2009 planning and are sorting out sponsorship of our Toyota powered program for next season.” Bill Davis
Racing competes in both the Sprint Cup Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. BDR continues to seek sponsorship for the 2009 season.(BDR PR)
AND Caterpillar, Inc., will not be the sponsor of Dave B***y's Toyota Camry for the final two races this season, ending an association which began in 1999. The #22 Sprint Cup car will be sponsored at Phoenix and Homestead/Miami by Bad Boy Mowers. "We've fulfilled our obligation with Bill Davis Racing so it's really their choice," said Caterpillar director of racing operations Greg Towles. "Bill can run whatever he wants to for the last two races." Caterpillar, which will sponsor the #31 Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton in 2009, will have owner Richard Childress and Burton come to the its hospitality areas for the next two races. "We're just getting a lot of stuff ready for next year," said Towles, who was in Arizona on Thursday visiting Caterpillar facilities with Burton and Childress. In a press release, Davis said his team's "sorting out sponsorships" and planning for 2009. "This seems to be the year of change," said Davis. "We had a great run with Cat and we are thankful for its sponsorship of our team over the years."(Peoria Journal Star)(11-7-2008) Comment here

Phoenix Goodyear Tire Notes: Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same tire codes at Phoenix this weekend, though those for the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be branded "Goodyear Eagle," while those for the Truck Series will be branded "Goodyear Wrangler" . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Goodyear brought for Sprint Cup and Nationwide teams to run at Phoenix this past April . . . this is one of the more popular tire combinations in Goodyear's 2008 tire lineup . . . in addition to Phoenix, teams in all three major NASCAR series have run this specific combination at Richmond and New Hampshire this season . . . teams in the Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series have also run this tire set-up at Milwaukee, Gateway, Indianapolis Raceway Park and Memphis this year . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Phoenix. The estimated pit window is every 75-80 laps, based on fuel mileage. Goodyear's "Spirit of America" airship, based out of Carson, Calif., will be covering the NASCAR race weekend at Phoenix.(Goodyear PR), see codes, pressures and more on my Phoenix Race Info page or the 2008 Tire Notes page.(11-7-2008)
Air Force leaving Wood Brothers? hearing that the Air Force sponsorship will leave the #21 Wood Brothers Ford and could be headed to either one of the Roush Racing teams [#'s 6,16,17,26,99] or Yates Racing [#28, #38].(11-6-2008)
New Crew Chief for McMurray in 2009 UPDATE2: from a Detroit Free Press article by NASCAR Sprint Cup owner Jack Roush: "By the way, Jamie [McMurray, #26 Ford after his 1st top-5 in over a year] did the job at Charlotte [in the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway], finishing fifth. We'll be looking to 2009 with a new crew chief for him -- mix up the chemistry again".(Detroit Free Press), so looks like current #26 crew chief, Larry Carter, will not return to the #26 team and McMurray in 2009.(10-17-2008)
UPDATE: hearing that McMurray will reunite with his former Ganassi crew chief Donnie Wingo and Carter could be headed to Yates Racing as the crew chief for Paul Menard.(10-18-2008)
UPDATE2: "I am all for the crew chief change because I've worked with the crew chief in the past," McMurray said of bringing in veteran Donnie Wingo. "He's like my best friend, and ever since I left Ganassi, I have remained very good friends with Donnie. "The whole time I was at Ganassi, I can remember seeing crew chiefs that had an engineering background and thinking in my head, 'Damn, I really wish I had a crew chief with that background, because I think that would take me to that next level. Instead of running sixth to 12th, we'll maybe contend for wins. But I didn't realize how great I had it. I've missed Donnie ever since. Larry's done a great job, but you kind of get used to working with someone, and I feel like everyone I've had since [Wingo], I've compared to my times with Donnie. And those were probably some of the best races for me. Next year, I think, should be my best year ever."(ESPN.com)(11-6-2008) Comment here

He's so likable that he tends to be overlooked at times, even when he is winning races in bunches and stringing together NASCAR Sprint Cup championships.
It's not that he doesn't have his cadre of fans and detractors. It's just that Johnson doesn't seem to inspire their passions like drivers such as Kyle and Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Johnson tends to be politically correct, unassuming, friendly, respectful and all the other fine attributes of an exemplary Boy Scout. By being so, well, vanilla, he doesn't always get the kind of respect he deserves for the record he has posted since moving to Sprint Cup full-time in 2002.

Nov. 6 NASCAR Nationwide Series:Saturday’s race will be Leg Two of a triple-duty weekend for Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick.
What’s more, either driver could very well pull off the unprecedented ‘tri-sweep.’ In fact, Busch was only one race short of the deed during last season’s Phoenix weekend. He won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide races before finishing eighth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.Whether or not they do pull off the sweep, both drivers should run up front during the NASCAR Nationwide race.Busch has won the last two series races at Phoenix. In five races there since 2005, he has a Driver Rating of 115.5, an Average Running Position of 9.3, 104 Fastest Laps Run and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 78.1%. He also comes off a Texas win in which he scored his third perfect Driver Rating (150.0) of the season.Harvick has run all seven Phoenix races since 2005. During that span, he has a Driver Rating of 113.6, an Average Running Position of 6.6, 76 Fastest Laps Run and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 92.3%.Carl Edwards likely will do his best to spoil the sweep. He will be driving with a sense of urgency, trying to stay in title contention. His statistics are slightly better than front-running Clint Bowyer. Edwards has a Driver Rating of 115.1, an Average Running Position of 6.6, 114 Fastest Laps Run and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 90.0. Comparatively, Bowyer has a Driver Rating of 111.6, an Average Running Position of 7.8, 146 Fastest Laps Run and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 86.6%.(NASCAR)

Nov. 6 NASCAR Nationwide Series: Although there are only two races remaining in the NASCAR Nationwide Series season, it’s never too late for the Kelly Bires and the No. 47 Glad Trash Bags Ford team to learn something new.The team will be trying an assortment of new setups during practice for the Hefty Odor Block 200 at the Phoenix International Raceway.“Phoenix will be an experiment for us,” said crew chief Scott Zipadelli. “We have a pretty good setup for the flat tracks, but we’re always trying to get better. We’re going to do some things that are completely different during practice and settle on something Kelly likes for the race. I’m sure we’ll be making a lot changes on the car during the race, and we’ll leave ourselves some options for the race.“During the course of the season you get a lot of ideas. You try to sort through all that information and narrow it down to three or four that have the most promise. We’re really eager to put it all in motion.”JTG Daugherty Racing not only is trying to finish the current season on a strong note, it hopes to get a running start on the 2009 campaign. That’s why the team is always working toward the future.“You can’t ever be satisfied in this sport,” Bires said. “We always want to get better. This race is an experiment for us, but we won’t be doing anything too risky. Everything we’ve put into this race is based on all the data we’ve accumulated and our racing experience. This won’t be a shot in the dark. It’s based on a lot of work.”(JTGDaugherty) (11-06-08
