LEADING OFF
Sponsor me?
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports
Shooter
I get a ton of emails everyday mostly
junk but a lot of them concerning the workshops and the website.
Frequently I get asked to "sponsor" someone for new
membership into our little family at SportsShooter.com. There are lots
of professional photography organizations out there that require
sponsorship (fill in the initials here: NPS, CPS, NPPA and ss.com to
name just a few).
For me, I would only "sponsor" someone that I personally know pretty well

learned and how it compared to school.
Dirk Dewachter in our regular "Ask Sports Shooter" feature tackles a topic we all dread: Getting ripped off.
Allen Murabayashi pens another thoughtful and enlightening article about the business side of photography. Matt Brown contributes this issue's "Photographers Toy Box" with a look at the new Nikon D700.

INTERN DIARIES
'I had to show him or her everything
from my shoot and accept the criticism. It was
great.'
By Teresa Prince, St. Louis
Post-Dispatch
Before June, 2008, I was the only member of my family who had never visited St. Louis. I had no idea what to expect from the city or the Post-Dispatch, but I drove south towards the adventure.
At the Post-Dispatch, I was surprised to find I didn't have a desk; none of the photographers did. We all met in a room set off from the main newsroom, where everyone worked at a counter together. It was much easier to show my work to other shooters, look over their shoulders and carry on conversations. I was also surprised that the staff was so young. Before I arrived, most of the senior shooters took buy-outs. I was sad that so much experience and talent was gone but thrilled to work with people near my age who liked to host cookouts.

By Jonathan Moore, Getty

Interning at Getty Images this summer was
certainly a profound and enlightening experience, but before I talk
about the internship, I think it's important to start off by talking
about the process of getting the internship because there is a lesson
to be learned. It started just after the Sports Shooter Academy last
March. One of the instructors informed me of the internship and
offered to write a letter of recommendation. I accepted the offer.
After six LONG weeks, I finally received an email from the director of
photography indicating that my portfolio had been reviewed and that I
would have an answer sometime within the next two weeks.

By Patrick Smith, The Baltimore

I've never been a lucky guy, and to say
that I was this past year would be the complete opposite of what my
year has been, but someone gave me some luck this summer, which turned
out to be one of the best I've ever had only minutes from home at The
Baltimore Sun.

'In the end, my internship was an
amazing learning experience and a major time for growth as a
photographer'
By Luke Harris, Skagit Valley
Herald
It was the best of times, it was the worst
of times, but there was always wild art to be shot at the Skagit
Valley Herald or "The SVH" as its called in Mount Vernon,
Washington where I interned this summer.
This said, there were so many good times I'll never be able to cover all the quirky and hilarious people and experiences I had at the SVH in this article.

By Carlos Delgado, Erie Times-News
By Carlos Delgado, Erie Times-News
Framed by an ice-covered tree branch, Anton Krein, 23, of Erie, walks down State Street near Perry Square in downtown Erie on March 5, 2008.
A year or so went by after I graduated from Cal State Fullerton, and it was crunch time to get another internship in. My first internship was at the Long Beach Press-Telegram, my hometown paper. While it was an important stepping-stone and learning experience, I knew I needed to get out of my Southern California comfort bubble to further my career. So, I sent out a big stack of applications all over the place, and I went with the first paper to want me.

Make Your Photography Like a Bad Cold:
Internet Virality & Photos
By Allen Murabayashi
The rise of the Internet has given rise to
the term "viral," which gets tossed around like a baseball
on a triple play. "Viral" usually equates to more traffic,
which usually equates to more money. So in that sense, we all want to
attain virality on the Internet with our photos and photo
activities.

'How to cover a jump-cut" or
poorman's second camera.'
By Myung J. Chun, Los Angeles
Times
You're editing a video piece and you're
faced with a static talking head or you've edited that talking head
and now it's full of jump cuts. What do you do? By shooting HD and
editing it on a standard definition timeline, you now have the extra
resolution and the ability to zoom in on the talking head allowing you
to hide the jump cut or adding a little visual variety to a static
shot. Think of this as a poorman's second camera or "how to cover
a jump-cut."

Sports Shooter Academy VI To Be Held
April 8 - 12, 2009
Applications for the upcoming Sports Shooter Academy will be available in the next week to 10 days according to workshop director Robert Hanashiro.
"We are working out some details that we hope will be very exciting for everyone interested in attending this very cool workshop," Hanashiro said.
The Sports Shooter Academy is a hands-on workshop that gives participants an opportunity to cover NCAA Division I and other events in Southern California under the guidance of an award-winning faculty. SSA VI will be held April 8-12, 2009.
In addition to covering sports events, several classroom sessions will be part of the schedule with topics including location portrait lighting, digital workflow and setting up and using remote cameras.
Each evening, participants will edit their work under the guidance of the faculty, receiving one-on-one critiques. The best work of the day will be shown and awards will be given to the top photographs.
"Participants get world-class instruction and critiques of their real world sport coverage and portraiture for a bargain price when you compare it to any other workshop out there," said aid SportsShooter.com member and student Octavian Cantilli who attend SSA V and the recent Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp '08.
The Sports Shooter Academy is sponsored by Nikon. Other companies supporting the workshop are Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera.
The Sports Shooter Academy was created by Southern California freelance photographer Matt Brown and Hanashiro, USA TODAY staff photographer and Sports Shooter founder. Their aim is to give students and working photographers an opportunity shoot real sports events under the guidance of a faculty of award-winning photographers to learn new techniques, look at sports photography in a different way and to grow professionally. With the cooperation of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference, participants will shoot events at Cal State Fullerton, U.C. Irvine and Cal State Long Beach.
"When I think back at all of the great portfolio review, daily editing sessions and time just at an event or at dinner talking to these guys (on the workshop faculty) I can't stress how important opportunities like SSA are to you career," said SportsShooter.com member Allan Campbell from Eagle Web Press / Eagle Newspapers Inc.
"These sessions are not just some talking head at the front of the room and then you go out. These guys are there at the events pushing you to break past the limits of your gear, your creativity, even your abilities. They are trying to make you better."

TRAVEL SMART
Going Light - Carry On Issues
By Doug Murdoch, Think Tank
Photo
"Going light" for sports photographers is an oxymoron.
Before the Olympics, I received calls and emails from photographers around the world asking about how to get their gear to Beijing. For the record, I always recommended that they should try to meet both the size and weight requirement for their chosen airline. We received reports from Bert Hanashiro and others that there were hundreds of our rollers at the Olympics, and I know that the majority of them exceeded the stated weight limit.

New Camera cases from ThinkTank, Tenba, Lowe-Pro, Tenba, KATA, Domke, Lightware, Tamrac, Mountainsmith, Pelican, Shootsac, Jill.E, plus about 20 other manufacturers are always in stock now.
While at the show, I stopped by the ShootSac booth to see them, and try one on. I liked them! Shootsac Basic Black Shooters Kit, Neoprene Lens Location Bag - http://www.adorama.com/CSSSBK.html
The Basic Shootsac is designed to be WORN comfortably like an article of clothing WHILE you shoot. Use your "traditional" camera bag to transport your gear - load up your Shootsac for active shooting. With 3 easy access lens pockets and 3 safety snap pockets this revolutionary lens bag will change the way you shoot.
Keep your favorite lenses, compact flash cards, batteries, cell phone and other shooting necessities within arms reach instead of in your gear bag. The bag is made of wetsuit grade neoprene that gently wraps your lenses in individual protective pockets, keeping them safe from scratches and bumps while also conforming to your body.
A few weeks ago I attended Moose Peterson's Digital Workshop Landscape Series (http://www.digitallandscape.org) in Killington, VT. Besides, Moose, he was joined by Instructors Joe McNally, Laurie Excel and Kevin Dobler (Serious line-up eh?). I noticed that many of the 45 attendees were using LensCoat to protect their lenses and camera bodies. I knew of LensCoat and actually had sold them over the years, but never had seen them in action. What a great idea...You spend hundred's and thousands of dollars on your cameras & lenses, why not use a little insurance, and protect them? Find the LensCoat for your gear here: http://tinyurl.com/65jxzt
