Mears To Stay In No. 5 Through End Of Year
Although a switch for the NASCAR Sprint Cup finale at Homestead-Miami was discussed, Casey Mears will remain in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet while Mark Martin will sit on the sideline. Martin is replacing Mears next season, while Mears will drive for Richard Childress Racing. There were discussions about Mears driving for RCR with Martin going into the Hendrick car for the finale so they could get a head start on next season, Mears and Martin said last Sunday. But Hendrick Motorsports has opted to just keep Mears in the car.
Gordon On Texas Pole
Despite all his success in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Jeff Gordon hasn’t had much of it at Texas Motor Speedway. That could be about to change. Gordon, driving the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, dashed to his first pole at the 1.5-mile track on Friday to claim the top starting spot for Sunday’s Dickies 500. The four-time series champ is seeking his first win in his 16th start at the track. Gordon’s fast lap of 188.469 mph beat out Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s Martin Truex Jr., who qualified second at 188.003. Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer posted the third-fastest speed at 187.859. Roush Fenway Racing’s Jamie McMurray and Hendrick’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed the top five.
Positions six through 10 belong to Roush Fenway’s Matt Kenseth, Hendrick’s Jimmie Johnson, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Reed Sorenson and Haas CNC Racing’s Scott Riggs. Chase For The Sprint Cup drivers outside the top 10 included Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards (16th), JGR’s Denny Hamlin (17th), Roush Fenway’s Greg Biffle (19th), RCR’s Kevin Harvick (23rd), JGR’s Kyle Busch (29th) and RCR’s Jeff Burton (38th). Brad Keselowski, driving the No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, qualified based on speed and will start 37th in his series debut. Tony Raines (Haas CNC Racing), Bryan Clauson (Ganassi), Chad McCumbee (Petty Enterprises), Max Papis (Germain Racing) and Johnny Sauter (EM Motorsports) all failed to qualify based on speed and will miss the race.

The talk in the garage is that testing at Cup tracks next year, which NASCAR floated out the idea of about 24 days, could be reduced to about 12-16.(Roanoke Times)(11-1-2008)
Earnhardt, Jr. says season is too long: In a year that the sanctioning body was supposed to get back to its roots, it may be time for NASCAR to take an even longer, harder look at itself, #88-Dale Earnhardt, Jr said. Foremost in his mind: the length of the season. "We have saturated the market with race after race after race," Earnhardt said. "The NFL, they do such a great job. I hate to keep comparing to them and using them as examples, but they do the best job. They give you just enough to keep you wanting more. The season ends before you want it to. You get just enough to get excited and then it's all over and there's such a long wait. The model works." But perhaps Earnhardt's most pointed comment was a swipe at what could be construed as greed and excess, not only by the sanctioning body, but drivers, team owners and practically everyone associated with the sport. "We're driven by the ability to go make another dollar and make more money and there's no way we would ever trim it down," Earnhardt said with a shrug. "When we were a 28-race schedule, the sport was giving you just enough to get really get excited about the next season. When we were racing at 12 o'clock, people were racing home from church to get to see the start of the race. We've just made it too easy and too much. We sort of lost a lot of the substance that we really had before and the character of the sport I think has waned a little bit, but its part of the times, too." Even though it would mean a significant drop in revenue, Earnhardt would love to see NASCAR scale back. But he isn't holding his breath it'll happen any time soon. "No way we would ever trim the schedule back," he said. "There's no way we would change what we really already have here."(Yahoo Sports)(11-1-2008)
Gordon say Letarte will continue as crew chief next year: Should Gordon not crack the win column before the season finale at Homestead, don't expect any wholesale changes to the #24 squad including crew chief Steve Letarte's post. "We're not changing Steve or crew chiefs," Gordon said. "I believe in him. The problems we're having are not Steve. We need to build more depth on the team, and Steve is a big part of organizing that and has really been spearheading a lot of the ideas that are going to be improvements for us for this season and next year."(CBS Sports)(11-1-2008)

Texas qualifying run goes Gordon's way in a big way
Pole's a start, but four-time champion still looking for win in Lone Star State
FORT WORTH, Texas – Jeff Gordon, underrated? Jeff Burton thinks so.
"When we talk about the greats of our sport his name doesn't seem to come up," Burton said Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. "It's easy for me to sit here and say how great Richard Petty was because I never had to race with him. I think drivers have a hard time saying, 'You know what? That guy might be better than me.'

Hornaday wins, closes in, but Benson still has points lead
FORT WORTH, Texas - Ron Hornaday won one race, but Johnny Benson still leads the other.
Hornaday came from the back of the pack to earn a dominating victory over Kyle Busch Friday night in the Chevy Silverado 350k at Texas Motor Speedway, completing a season sweep of the two Craftsman Truck Series races at the 1.5-mile track.

Edwards earns Nationwide pole, while Bowyer will start 21st
FORT WORTH, Texas - Carl Edwards is doing his best to stay in the hunt for two NASCAR championships this season.
Edwards, chasing Jimmie Johnson in the Cup playoffs, won the pole for Saturday's O'Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway. That gives him a big jump on Nationwide Series leader Clint Bowyer, who will line up 21st in Saturday's race.

No changes to Nationwide points system next year: NASCAR gave me [Terry Blount] a little news this week that the Nationwide points system will not change in 2009. One year ago, NASCAR officials floated one of its infamous trial balloons about the possibility of changing the system to keep Cup regulars from earning points in the feeder league. The proposed plan was this: Any Cup driver ranked in the top 35 in the Cup standings would not earn points for a Nationwide event. The idea was to ensure that a Nationwide-only driver win the series championship without excluding or limiting Cup drivers from participated in Nationwide events. But NASCAR officials said Tuesday they have no plans to change the points format for 2009

Oct. 31 NASCAR Nationwide Series: CARL EDWARDS - No. 60 Save-a-Lot Ford Fusion - (qualified 1st) -"Drew and the guys have been working really hard for tomorrow out here. This is great. We've got to run well and the guys have been doing a great job. That lap was fun. That was good enough for me."
EDWARDS - PRESS CONFERENCE - TAKE US THROUGH YOUR LAP. "The Save-a-Lot Fusion was really good. Kevin [Harvick] laid down a really fast lap and I thought, 'Man, that's a good one.' I didn't know if I could do anything with that. I ran my lap and I was real excited to hear that it was faster, because I don't think I could have gone any faster than that. It's cool. It's neat to win a pole here at Texas. I don't know if you guys saw it, but they put your car over there in victory *** and we got a neat helmet from 7-Eleven and the whole crew got to take their photos. That's pretty neat. They do a really neat presentation here for the pole." (FordRacing)
Oct. 31 NASCAR Nationwide Series: Post-qualifying quotes from Bobby Hamilton Jr. BOBBY HAMILTON JR. - No. 25 Ford Fusion - (qualified 3rd) - "The track has cooled off; it's done everything that gives the car grip. We made some changes right at the last minute to tighten it up. The bottom line is if you can turn on the wheel and stay on the gas, you're going to be fast. Fortunately, we were able to do that. We were a little bit off compared to these front two guys, but I don't know where I'll wind up. I hope we're in the top-10." YOU HAVE A LOGO ON THE HOOD NOW. "It's been a friend of mine for a while and I hate just having a plain race car. So I asked him to get the decals and we'll do something." HAMILTON - PRESS CONFERENCE - TAKE US THROUGH YOUR LAP "We just had a perfect. The track cooled off, one and two and three and four and just had a ton of grip. If you're able to run wide open and if you can do that, you could run really fast. Fortunate enough, we had enough grip in the car to get it done. I didn't think we'd be that quick, but I'll take it." (FordRacing) (10-31-08

Oct. 31 NASCAR Nationwide Series:Halloween qualifying for the O'Reilly Challenge has concluded. Hornaday wins at Texas: For the second time this season, #33-Ron Hornaday was first to cross the finish line at Texas Motor Speedway to pick up the win for the Chevy Silverado 350. Toyota clinches manufacturers title: Toyota clinched its third consecutive NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series manufacturer's championship Friday at Texas Motor Speedway when Kyle Busch crossed the finish line second in his #51 Tundra -- enabling Toyota to take home another title with two races remaining in the 2008 season. It marks the fourth manufacturer's title for Toyota since becoming a participant in NASCAR's upper levels of competition in 2004. Seven teams have campaigned Toyota Tundras in 2008 -- Bill Davis Racing, Billy Ballew Motorsports, Germain Racing, HT Motorsports, Red Horse Racing, Wyler Racing and Xpress Motorsports -- combining for 12 wins, 54 top-five finishes and 105 top-10 results in 23 races. In addition, Tundra drivers captured 10 poles and led 1,756 laps in NCTS competition this season. Bill Davis Racing (BDR) and Billy Ballew Motorsports (BBM) led the Tundra contingent in 2008, winning 10 of 12 races for Toyota. BDR drivers have combined for seven of the 12 victories, with Johnny Benson winning five times (Milwaukee, Kentucky, Indianapolis, Nashville and Martinsville),and Mike Skinner (Las Vegas) and Scott Speed (Dover) each recording one win. Busch won three races (California, Atlanta and Bristol) for BBM, and Bodine -- driving for Germain Racing -- won the superspeedway events at Daytona and Talladega.(Toyota Motorsports PR)(11-1-2008)

Benson to Red Horse Racing in 2009? UPDATE 2: Starr out at end of season? Denied: Team owner Bill Davis wasn't at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, when rumors swirled about the stability of his race team. A possible merger or sale to Gillett Evernham Motorsports has apparently fallen apart, and now comes whispers that Truck Series points leader Johnny Benson might leave the team at the end of the season to drive for Red Horse Racing.(AP/ESPN.com)(10-30-2008)
UPDATE: Hearing that the entire #23 team may be moving to Red Horse Racing next season. Also hearing that David Starr will be out at the end of the season, and a possible second team at Red Horse Racing will have a rookie named as driver.(10-30-2008)
UPDATE 2: During the prerace setup on SPEED/tv, while interviewing David Starr, Ray Dunlap reported Starr would not be leaving the #11. Starr said that they are working with their new sponsor Zachry through the end of the season and hoped that they liked what they saw and would be back next season with Red Horse Racing.(10-31-2008)
