Windows 7: Fundamentally Familiar
Now that many of us have seen, and a handful of us have touched, Windows 7, it's time to talk about what this all means. For me, I see an OS that isn't radically different from Vista. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily. Read my column to see why. ExtremeTech Editor Loyd Case was also at the Windows 7 reviewers' workshop and has his own perspective on why Microsoft may get it right this time.
Microsoft Takes Office to the Web, Finally
Windows 7 wasn’t the only news at this week’s Professional Developers Conference. Apparently Microsoft Office is getting an upgrade--or wait. Strike that. Actually it’s getting elevated--into the clouds, that is. That’s right, get ready for Web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. More details in PCMag’s report. In addition to the Office cloud, Microsoft also announced an Amazon S3 cloud-hosting competitor called Azure. AppScout explains what it is and why you may not need it.
The Best Security Suites
The Best Security Suites Do me a favor, check how long you have left on your security software subscriptions. Is it a year? Six months? Six days? My guess is, if it’s not already expired, it will be in less than a couple of months, which means it’s time to decide if you should upgrade or switch to something new. Before you make that choice, read PCMag’s roundup of the latest security suites. There are some real winners in here from, among others, Panda, Trend Micro and Norton.
Costa: Lose Your Remote Control?
Take a good look at your remote controls. How many do you see? One–Ha! No one has just one. More likely there are four or more lying around, none of which controls all of your multimedia devices. Reviews czar Dan Costa, however, thinks he's seen the future of remote controls. It's no longer about adding more. Instead, there's just one device--perhaps the iPhone--software applets that let you control whatever new gadget you buy. This is the concept behind the new Sonos Controller for the iPhone. Costa got a first hand look at it last week and now he’s convinced that our ever-expanding world of remotes is just about to start shrinking. I can’t wait.
Hands On: New Xbox Experience
Next month Microsoft will offer the first significant Xbox 360 dashboard upgrade since the 360 was launched in 2005. The New Xbox Experience (NXE) won’t arrive on consoles until Nov 19, but you can get a full preview at PCMag.com, where Reviews Editor Dan Evans and Product Reviews Coordinator Zach Honig reveal what they learned when they downloaded the special preview onto PC Labs’ own Xbox 360.
Memory and Performance--The Final Word
ExtremeTech’s geeks are always looking for answers and if their answers reveal yet further questions they dive back in to try and find more answers. That’s why Analyst Joel Durham took a second look at memory and performance. This time he wanted to see if aggressive memory timings and over-clocking somehow trump overall memory capacity--at least when it comes to system performance. The short answer is...oh, no, you didn’t think I’d go ahead and tell you, did you? Read the story to learn the answer.
Dvorak: The Smartphone Wish List
Curmudgeon Columnist John Dvorak isn’t griping or being particularly grumpy. Instead, he’s come up with a thoughtful list of his most-wanted smartphone features. The good news is, from what I’ve seen and heard, many of these features are already on the way. Read his list and then start making your own.
Club Penguin Takes Over Times Square
“Club Penguin is, like, the totally coolest place where you can make friends, hang out, decorate your igloo and all sorts of other stuff.” That’s pretty much what my daughter would tell me if I asked why she loves and uses Club Penguin. The social networking site for kiddies--and my daughter--is now three years old and to celebrate, site owner Disney held a special event in Times Square. Gearlog sent an intern to grab pictures.
