[004] - Bash Debugger 4.0-0.1
by R. Bernstein (http://freshmeat.net/users/rocky/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 10:11

Software Development :: Interpreters
System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Bash Debugger (bashdb) is a debugger for Bash scripts. The
debugger command interface is modeled on the gdb command interface.
Front-ends supporting bashdb include GNU-Emacs and ddd. In the past, the
project has been used as a springboard for other experimental features such
as a timestamped history file (now in Bash versions after 3.0).

Changes: This major rewrite and reorganization of code has numerous
bugfixes and has been tested on bash 3.1 and 4.0 alpha. With the
introduction of a simple debugger command alias mechanism, there are some
incompatibilities. Command aliasing of short commands is no longer
hard-wired. New commands of note are "set autoeval" and "step+", taken from
ruby-debug. Emacs support has been greatly improved. Long option
command-processing is guaranteed.

by Chris (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrislusf/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 05:03

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: This release improves search performance by avoiding repeatedly
loading configuration files. It defaults to getting an auto-commit database
connection to avoid extra setAutoCommit operations. It fixes incorrect
error reporting for BufferIndex submit.do.

[012] - EiffelStudio 6.3.7.5278 (Development)
by Emmanuel Stapf (http://freshmeat.net/users/manus_eiffel/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 19:59

Database
Office/Business
Software Development

About: EiffelStudio is an IDE for the Eiffel language (ECMA-367, ISO/IEC
25436, and ACM Software System Award 2006). It includes: Eiffel compiler,
Eiffel editor, Eiffel code browsing tool, graphical design tool,
refactoring tool, debugger, profiler, and Eiffel analysis tools (Metrics,
Dependencies, etc.). Eiffel generates C or CLI for .NET or Mono. Eiffel
applies O-O principles and Design by Contract for high-quality software.
Many Eiffel libraries are included: ADT, network, GUI, database, parsing
(including an Eiffel parser), XML, Web, COM, and more.

Changes: A better debugging description when an invariant is violated;
this release shows the proper stack trace. A C compilation error with CECIL
when using gcc 3.4 or greater, which generated an abort sequence rather
than calling a feature, has been fixed. This release reduces the likelihood
that C code will not compile if compiled in C++ mode in .NET code
generation by ensuring that C++ externals are generated in their own file.
It has improved browsing of .NET external classes and features (the scroll
to feature works for .NET classes, and this release avoids loading the same
NET class each time a different feature of that class is selected.)

[013] - EmptyCrate Game Engine 4
by Jason Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/lefticus/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 18:00

Games/Entertainment

About: EmptyCrate Game Engine allows for the creation of first person 2d
adventure games using a Drupal module. Once the game is written it is
rendered using a Flash 9 application embedded in the Drupal page, making
the adventure game instantly available to virtually anyone with an Internet
enabled device. The engine represents the culmination of several years of
ideas which finally were able to come together with the right combination
of technologies. The realized goal was to make adventure games so
accessible and easy to write that it would be possible to create an
episodic game that is updated several times a week, similar to a Web comic.

Changes: This release brings the engine more in line with the feel of
traditional adventure game engines. Changes include new Iconed pointers
that use the spacebar to toggle, black background and tweaked modal dialogs
settings, moving the inventory to the left side to make it fit on an
average screen better, mouse-over for item names, and disabling the object
glow effect.

[014] - ExactImage 0.6.4
by René Rebe (http://freshmeat.net/users/ReneRebe/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 18:02

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library. Unlike
ImageMagick, it allows operation in several color spaces and bit depths
natively, resulting in much lower memory and computational requirements.
Some optimized algorithms operate in 1/20 of the time ImageMagick requires,
and displaying large images can be as fast as 1/10 of the time the
"display" program takes.

Changes: Lossless and faster JPEG cropping now takes residual crops into
account, left over from 8x8 JPEG DCT blocks. The PDF writer was fixed to
write floating point numbers in a well defined format (fixes JPEG writing
on Debian and similar patched C library variants). The install targets were
improved to make sure the directories exist before copying the files, as
well as take DESTDIR into account in all places.

[016] - GeoServer 1.7.0
by Mike Pumphrey (http://freshmeat.net/users/mpumphrey/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 18:06

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: GeoServer connects your information to the Geospatial Web. With
GeoServer, you can publish and edit data using open standards. Your
information is made available in a large variety of formats as maps/images
or actual geospatial data. GeoServer's transactional capabilities offer
robust support for shared editing. It supports WFS-T and WMS open protocols
from the OGC to produce JPEG, PNG, SVG, KML/KMZ, GML, PDF, Shapefiles,
GeoRSS, JSON, and more. It is built on the GeoTools2 Java GIS toolkit.

Changes: GeoServer security has been improved by allowing access control
at the layer/feature type level, in addition to the service level.
Rendering is faster with WMS, as well as faster data access with Shapefile,
PostGIS, and ArcSDE. The preview interface now allows for better control of
various rendering aspects such as anti-aliasing and image format. GeoServer
now supports additional raster formats such as ECW, MrSID, and JPEG 2000 by
leveraging the GDAL library. For developers, there is a change to the
internal feature model, which now allows the modeling of complex feature
relationships.

[017] - gumnut 0.2.3
by fooscope (http://freshmeat.net/users/fooscope/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 17:42

Communications

About: gumnut is a program to find the most supported proposals within
large groups of people. The text or GUI client can create, moderate, and
display proposals over a decentralized communication network (currently
Gnutella). Proposals are text files with a simple naming convention that
uses the filename to describe field attributes (such as topic and
geographical location). Popular proposals are found by searching on one or
more of these fields and then calculating the support for each proposal
based on the number of occurrences on the network.

Changes: This release adds a 'connect to IP' field to the GUI options
page.

by swivel (http://freshmeat.net/users/swivel/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Httpx takes over the front-line position of binding and listening
on the public address and port of your virtual Web hosting server. In this
role, it scans incoming requests looking for the HTTP/1.1 Host: request
header entity. Once the Host: value is found for a given request, it is
routed to a UNIX domain socket in the local file system located through a
database lookup. Over this UNIX domain socket, an inter-process descriptor
pass occurs to a Web server modified slightly to receive TCP socket
descriptors passed over a UNIX domain socket instead of binding, listening
for, and accepting TCP sockets. This allows vhosts to share an IP address
while having private, host-specific, potentially unique httpd contexts.

Changes: In-process caching of the HostMap table contents has been added.
This allows httpx to continue handling requests even if MySQL is
unavailable for whatever reason. The cache is populated with the HostMap
table contents immediately upon startup, then periodically refreshed when
servicing requests.

by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 17:47

Multimedia :: Video :: Capture
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Hardware

About: libv4l is a collection of libraries that adds a thin abstraction
layer on top of video4linux2 (V4L2) devices. The purpose of this layer is
to make it easy for application writers to support a wide variety of
devices without having to write separate code for different devices in the
same class. It consists of 3 different libraries. libv4lconvert offers
functions to convert from any (known) pixel format to V4l2_PIX_FMT_BGR24 or
V4l2_PIX_FMT_YUV420. libv4l1 offers the (deprecated) v4l1 API on top of
v4l2 devices, independent of the drivers for those devices supporting v4l1
compatibility (which many v4l2 drivers do not). libv4l2 offers the v4l2 API
on top of v4l2 devices, while adding for the application transparent
libv4lconvert conversion where necessary.

Changes: Temporary buffers for multiple conversion passes are no longer
allocated on the stack. The most notable effect is that libv4l now no
longer conflicts with Ekiga's large stack usage.

[025] - Logger 08293.0159
by BpMatthias (http://freshmeat.net/users/BpMatthias/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 20:00

System :: Logging
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Logger is a log queueing and optimization utility. It can
completely replace sys/klogd, handle logs larger than 2GB, perform
automatic nightly log rotation without affecting services, and transfer
logs between machines via TCP connections. Any application that writes a
text log can be maintained by Logger. It is light, small, and fast,
emphasizes security, and reduces drive usage through memory queueing.

Changes: This critical upgrade addresses the issue with the random
segfaults. The TCP connections are now UDP. This change has been made in
such a way that the config file doesn't need to be changed. If you want to,
though, simply replace TCP with UDP. The segfaults actually occurred due to
the TCP connection stack running out of space. Switching to UDP is the best
approach until something like T/TCP or similar is available in Linux.

features such as registration of new network devices, detection of abnormal
network activities including from remote snort sensors, isolation of
problematic devices, remediation through a captive portal, and
registration-based and scheduled vulnerability scans.

Changes: This release adds support for the Cisco Aironet 1250. It disables
node expiration by default. VLAN isolation code has been adapted to support
Nessus Scan without any VLAN change, and to support “Skip Registration”.
The Javascript popup on the release page has been replaced with DHTML. The
service entry for snmptrapd has been disabled.

[028] - phplist 2.10.7 (Stable)
by Michiel (http://freshmeat.net/users/michiel/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 20:27

Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: phplist is a mailing list and newsletter manager that allows
posting via a Web page. It works well when used for announcements, and can
handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists,
but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing
up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be
targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be
replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can
update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems,
they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Changes: This release fixes some security problems found in the fckeditor.

[029] - phpLogCon 2.5.16 (Beta)
by deltaray (http://freshmeat.net/users/deltaray/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 18:03

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: phpLogCon is a Web front-end for syslog and other network event
data. It provides easy browsing, searching, basic analysis, and some
graphics. Data is taken from databases or plain syslog text files, so
phpLogCon does not require changes to an existing logging infrastructure.
Depending on the log data present, it can process syslog messages, Windows
event log entries, and some more exotic things. Its troubleshooting support
enables users to quickly find solutions to problems seen in the log data.

Changes: This release fixes a problem when adding a MySQL logstream
source. Minor issues handling form input that happened when
magic_quotes_gpc was enabled have been fixed. A bug in the convert.php
script that inserted the wrong database version number has been fixed.
Support has been added to filter for dynamic fields within the logstream
database sources. Support has been added to suppress unparseable messages
when using msgparsers. There is a new setting for MySQL logstream sources
to control the amount of data per query.

[030] - Portable Linux Processor Affinity 1.2
by Jeff Squyres (http://freshmeat.net/users/jsquyres/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 21:20

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: PLPA originated as an attempt to solve the problem of multiple APIs
for processor affinity within Linux, but has since grown into a Linux
processor affinity toolkit. It provides a Linux
distro/kernel/glibc-independent C API for setting and getting processor
affinity, and in newer kernels on supported platforms, it also supports
mapping (core, socket) tuples to Linux virtual processor IDs. The
plpa-taskset command effectively provides command-line access to the C API,
and can be used to get/set processor affinity for new or already-running
processes. Affinity can be expressed either as a set of Linux virtual
processor IDs or (core, socket) tuples.

Changes: The major new feature of this release is the ability to bind
processes to specific (core,socket) sets. Specifically, PLPA allows the
binding specification to be specified in terms of cores and sockets (vs.
Linux virtual processor IDs). Binding to (core,socket) tuples is available
through both the C API and the "plpa-taskset" command-line executable.

[031] - PureCM 2008-3
by stephen worthington (http://freshmeat.net/users/stephen_worthington/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 19:57

Software Development :: Bug Tracking
Software Development :: Version Control

About: PureCM is an integrated version control and defect tracking tool.
Based on the concept of changesets that represent tasks, it provides
developers with an easy to use and highly transparent GUI to improve
teamwork. It outperforms most other SCM tools, uses a reliable
transactional database, and is scalable to thousands of concurrent
developers. The server, GUI, command line, and Web clients runs on Windows,
Linux, Unix, and Mac OS.

Changes: This release comes with a new proxy server that caches data
locally to accelerate data access for distributed teams. Internal tests
have resulted in more than 18x faster file downloads. Further enhancements
include an improved resolve dialogue for merge conflicts, visual diffing of
image files, and the new component manager. The latter helps development
managers to link shared components within or between branches and manage
their update path. Changes to a component get automatically promoted to all
linked destinations, removing the need to merge them manually.

[040] - Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations 01 (DefaultMapleSode)
by Dennis J. Darland (http://freshmeat.net/users/djdarland/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 20:42

About: Sode.rb generates a Ruby program to use long Taylor series to solve
systems of ordinary differential equations. It generates code to solve the
equations in Ruby. Using the Taylor series, estimates are made of the
location and order of poles. An effort is made to adjust H to control the
error. It has worked well in testing, but needs more testing as there are
so many possibilities.

Changes: This is a version to generate Maple code. It is much faster, but
has no error estimation. A problem with multiple equations has been fixed.

[041] - Tin Hat 20081025
by Anthony G. Basile (http://freshmeat.net/users/blueness/)
Mon, Oct 27th 2008 17:39

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Security
Security :: Cryptography

About: Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo. It
aims to provide a very secure, stable, and fast desktop environment that
lives purely in RAM. Tin Hat boots from CD, or optionally USB pen drive,
but it is not a LiveCD in that it does not mount any file system from the
boot device. Rather, Tin Hat employs a massive squashfs image which expands
into tmpfs upon booting. This makes for long boot times, but remarkable
speeds during human-computer interaction.

Changes: No new features have been added, but many packages were updated
to sync up with Gentoo. In particular, Gnome was updated to 2.22.3, and the
kernel was updated to hardened 2.6.25-r8. Postfix was also updated to 2.5.5
to address a security issue.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Trafmetux is a network traffic meter for Linux. It tells you how
much IP traffic has been seen by the Linux kernel module during the last
few minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months. It's very useful when you have
a limited Internet connection with quotas. For instance, many mobile
broadband ISP provide only 3GB/month. In that case, you need to know how
many megabytes you already used.

Changes: A kernel patch is provided for users who don't want to compile it
as a module. Bugs in the way the sizes were displayed for large amounts of
traffic (over 1GB) have been fixed.
