AFI FEST Announces DOUBT for its Opening Night Gala
AFI FEST's new Opening Night Gala will be John Patrick Shanley's DOUBT, starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Based on Shanely's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, DOUBT, is the tale of a nun who confronts a priest when she suspects him of abusing a black student, which he denies. The story dives into the conflicts among religion, morality and authority.
Remember, you can keep up with all the Festival's films, filmmakers and events in the Daily News.
WHO'S COMING TO AFI FEST?
The two best things about the Festival are the films (of course) and the chance to meet the filmmakers. Here are a few who'll be attending AFI FEST:
OSCAR CONTENDERS AT AFI FEST
Why wait for the awards show to find out the nominees? See the Academy Awards selections from these countries at AFI FEST:
LION'S DEN (Argentina), REVANCHE (Austria), WORLDS APART (Denmark), THE CLASS (France), WALTZ WITH BASHIR (Israel), GOMORRA (Italy), TULPAN (Kazakhstan), O'HORTEN (Norway), EVERLASTING MOMENTS (Sweden)
SEARCHING FOR SOME MUSIC?
AFI FEST always has a solid lineup of music films. And this year's films are particularly great, with features and docs that are more than just performance pieces. The filmmakers have really gotten into the heads of the musicians.
AGILE, MOBILE, HOSTILE: Tricia Todd and Eric Matthies doc follows R&B singer and bluesman Andre Williams as he fights drug and alcohol addiction.
GOGOL BORDELLO NON-STOP: Five years in the making, Margarita Jimeno's doc chronicles the now wildly popular band as its members went from underground sensations to international stars.
HI MY NAME IS RYAN: Ryan Avery is a punk rock performance artist with a mission: “I like to make people happy…” He throws himself into a variety of musical projects, but not everybody is happy with the results. And is he happy with himself?
UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US: Burning churches, political statements, satanic rituals: What is Black Metal? Gill Holland tries to unravel the truth in this story of the Norwegian underground music scene.
And here's a big announcement from Dennis Lambert, the subject of OF ALL THE THINGS: he'll be playing a special show at the Knitting Factory on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m.
TICKETS AND PASSES
The staff at the Main Box Office is so busy that they hardly speak English anymore. It's all tickets this and passes that. Good for you that they're very focused on what they're doing.
Remember, the best way to experience AFI FEST is with a pass, and a Star Pass is the ONLY way to attend the Danny Boyle Tribute, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE screening and CHE.
FILM NEWS FROM AFI FESTIVALS
BURNING THE FUTURE: COAL IN AMERICA, which screened at AFI Dallas earlier this year, is holding a special screening at the Ocean Screening Room in Santa Monica on Oct. 28. David Novack's film explores the environmental and human costs of coal mining.
