SOURCE FREE'D AS FIRST ANDROID PHONE SHIPS
Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) announced the availability of
the Linux-based Android SDK (software development kit) under an Apache
2.0 license. The announcement came a day prior to retail availability of
T-Mobile's G1, the first Android phone.

MOTOROLA ANDROID PHONE DUE Q2
Verizon last week began distributing Motorola's first Linux-based
touchscreen phone for the U.S. market -- the Krave ZN4. And, Motorola
will ship an Android-based touchscreen phone geared toward "social
networking" website users, according to a BusinessWeek report.

TINY CLAMSHELL PDA RUNS LINUX
A startup called Imovio has announced a WiFi- and Bluetooth-enabled
clamshell PDA that runs the Linux-based Qt Extended stack. Very similar
to the Sharp Zaurus, the iKit is based on a Marvell PXA270 processor,
with 128MB RAM, 64MB flash, and a 2.8 inch QVGA display.

LINUX POWERS THIN MID
USI demonstrated a super-thin, Linux-based mobile Internet device (MID)
that offers GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and either HSPA or WiMAX. The Intel
Atom-equipped USI MID-160 sports a 5-inch 800x480 touchscreen, but lacks
a keyboard, helping it keep a 0.6-inch profile.

LINUX POWERS "CLOUD" GAMING CONSOLE
Envizions has announced an "open source hybrid Linux gaming system"
aimed at game developers. The EVO Smart Console is based on a 2.9GHz,
64-bit Athlon, includes its own Linux distro called Mirrors Evolution,
and offers game-play, Internet access, VoIP, and HD video playback.

NETBOOK RUNS DEBIAN ON CHINA-MADE CPU
A Chinese vendor of microprocessors and computer systems will reportedly
soon ship a low-cost "netbook" with an 8.9-inch display, Debian
Linux-based software, and a Chinese-made processor. The Lemote Tech
"Fuloong Mini" has a 600-800MHz Loongson 2F processor, 512MB of DDR2-666
RAM, and an 80GB hard drive.

LINUX TAKES TO HIGH SEAS, CHICKEN COOP
Plat'Home announced the results of its "Will Linux Work?" contest in
which developers stretched the limits of the company's Linux-based
OpenMicroServer (OMS). Four winning designs were selected, including a
sailboat navigator, a home automation system, an irrigation control
system, and a chicken-coop door controller.

QT PORTED TO S60
Nokia-owned Qt Software has accomplished a "pre-release" of the Qt GUI
toolkit for S60 phones. The free download means device developers will
soon enjoy Qt's "cross-platform" promise: building binaries for all the
most popular device OSes from a single source tree.

"ACCESS DAY" HIGHLIGHTS LINUX
Access released a lightweight "Mini" version of its Access Linux
Platform (ALP) mobile phone middleware and application stack. At its
"Access Day" partner event in Tokyo today, it also previewed ALP 3.0,
and highlighted its growing list of Linux design wins and ecosystem
partners.

WIND RIVER TOUTS ANDROID WIN, TOOLS
Wind River has officially announced plans to offer one of its
vertical-market "Platform" products for Android, a commercially
supported version of the Android development platform, which it expects
to ship before Q3, 2009. Additionally, it says it has already supplied
Android-related software integration services to Kyocera.
