MICROSOFT GIVING SHOWGOERS FREE COMPUTERS
Microsoft announced details of its industry keynote at next week's
Embedded Systems Conference (ESC), with a special twist. The first 300
attendees at the address by Kevin Dallas (left), general manager of the
company's Windows Embedded business, will receive a free Via Artigo
computer.

QT PORTED TO S60
Nokia-owned Qt Software has accomplished a "pre-release" of the Qt GUI
toolkit for S60 phones. The free download means device developers will
soon enjoy Qt's "cross-platform" promise: building binaries for all the
most popular device OSes from a single source tree.

WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 SMTP BUG GETS UNOFFICIAL FIX
A stubborn bug in Windows Mobile 6.1 is apparently preventing some users
from being able to send email via SMTP. Microsoft has made no official
announcements regarding the problem, but in the meantime, an independent
source has published an unofficial fix.

WINDOWS CE PNDS HAVE CELLULAR MODEMS
Using its Insignia house brand, Best Buy has launched two Windows CE GPS
devices that include built-in cellular modems. The "Insignia Internet
Connected GPS" systems provide real-time traffic updates, allow
searching Google, and let users email destinations to the devices from
desktop PCs.

HYBRID PC/PHONE USES ATOM
The Korean company Miutech announced a device claimed to squeeze an
Atom-powered PC and a mobile phone into a single package. The HDPC
(hybrid dual portable computer) runs Windows XP on the Atom and Windows
CE on an unspecified ARM processor, sporting dual displays.

HP SPINS EURO WINDOWS PHONES
HP has announced two new Windows Mobile 6.1 phones for the European
market. The IPAQ Voice Messenger and IPAQ Data Messenger feature optical
touch sensors, 320 x 240 displays, GPS, 802.11b/g wireless networking,
Bluetooth, 3.1 megapixel cameras, and microSD expansion slots.

WINDOWS PHONE SPORTS "OPTICAL MOUSE"
AT&T has announced a new Windows Mobile 6.1 phone that offers both a
touchscreen and a built-in "optical mouse." The Samsung Epix also
includes a 2.5-inch display, QWERTY keyboard, GPS, WiFi, stereo
Bluetooth, a two megapixel camera, and a microSD expansion slot.

LOW-COST POS POLISHES NETTOP CORE
HP has built Intel's "nettop" technology into a new POS (point of sale)
system for small- and medium-sized businesses. The "rp3000" includes a
1.6GHz Atom 230 processor, up to 2GB of RAM and 250GB of hard disk
storage, and eight USB ports.

IF THE WHITE RABBIT'S WATCH RAN WINDOWS MOBILE...
Programmer Alex Reich announced a Windows Mobile application that
messages meeting participants automatically when a user is running late.
Version 1.2.3 of "Oops I'm Late!" now sends alerts via Twitter and
Facebook, in addition to the program's existing SMS, phone, or email
notification methods.
