Rain out winners: so far in 2008 31 races and 32 qualifying attempts, there have been NINE qualifying sessions rained out. In the eight races run, all eight winners have come from the top 10 starting spot:
California, February: winner #99-Edwards started 9th, #48-Johnson started 1st finished 2nd
Bristol, March: #31-Burton 8th, #48-Johnson 18th
Michigan, June: #88-Earnhardt Jr. 3rd; #18-Busch 13th
Chicago, July: #18-Busch 1st
Watkins Glen: August, #18-Busch 1st
Richmond, September: #48-Johnson 3rd; #18-Busch 15th
New Hampshire, September: winner #16-Biffle 9th, #18-Busch 34th
Charlotte, October: winner #31-Burton 4th, #48-Johnson 6th
Martinsville, October: winner ? #48-Johnson starts 1st
The NINE qualifying sessions cancelled are a record. From 1980 thru present, the next worse year for qualifying cancellations was in 2002 when five were cancelled. Back a few years ago, if it rained on Friday, qualifying was many times moved to Saturday morning, that doesn't happen any longer.(10-17-2008)

New Crew Chief for McMurray in 2009 UPDATE: from a Detroit Free Press article by NASCAR Sprint Cup owner Jack Roush: "By the way, Jamie [McMurray, #26 Ford after his 1st top-5 in over a year] did the job at Charlotte [in the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway], finishing fifth. We'll be looking to 2009 with a new crew chief for him -- mix up the chemistry again".(Detroit Free Press), so looks like current #26 crew chief, Larry Carter, will not return to the #26 team and McMurray in 2009.(10-17-2008)

UPDATE: Robbie Loomis said Petty Enterprises has been approached by at least three organizations about a possible alliance heading into next season. The vice president of racing operations, speaking Friday at Martinsville Speedway, would not identify them, but published reports say Dale Earnhardt Inc. might be on that list. DEI officials declined to comment. Loomis said the Pettys' deal with Dodge extends three years past this one. DEI signed an extension with General Motors/Chevrolet before this season. Loomis said Petty Enterprises is closer to naming a sponsor for Labonte, and he appears close to set on Chad McCumbee to drive the second car, which will be the #44. He said the key in all of this is continued growth of the Petty brand, which a merger with DEI may or may not allow.(ESPN.com)
AND Officials from Petty Enterprises do not deny that they have held preliminary discussions about a possible future partnership of some sort with Dale Earnhardt Inc., but they strongly deny that anything is close to happening or even likely to happen. In fact, Robbie Loomis said that DEI is not the only group with which Petty Enterprises is discussing its future. Nor is it alone in the Sprint Cup Series garage area, where Loomis insisted all teams are scrambling to find stronger footing in difficult economic times. "The bottom line for us is that we're committed to Dodge," Loomis said. "We like Dodge as our manufacturer; Richard Petty especially. We have three more years with them as far as solid commitments. We feel good about where we're at with them."(NASCAR.com)(10-18-2008)

SEATTLE WA (10-17-08) - Nineteen-year-old Tayler Malsam found himself smack-dab in the middle of one of the most competitive SunTrust Rookie battles in ARCA RE/MAX Series history in 2008. Although he didn't win the rookie title, the Seattle, Washington driver certainly did end the season on a strong note with top-10 runs at New Jersey Motorsports Park where he finished third on the 2.3-mile road course and a solid 8th place finish in the Toledo finale.
While the racing season is over for the ARCA RE/MAX Series tour, it certainly is not for Malsam, who will attempt to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race this weekend in Martinsville, Virginia.
And that's not all that Malsam's doing, or has done in 2008. Malsam also brought valuable exposure to the ARCA RE/MAX Series in a part of the world that normally doesn't cover this Toledo-based tour - that part of the world being the northwest corner of the United States where Malsam was born, raised and learned to race in high-horsepower winged sprint cars.
The following story was written by Holly Cain and featured today (Friday, October 17) in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a widely circulated and respected news source in Seattle.

Kenly, N.C.-A.J. Frank unofficially turned the fastest lap of the Friday’s optional practice session at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, N.C.
Frank, driver of the No. 56n Strutmasters.com/Smith Paving Chevrolet, toured the high-banked, .4-mile track in 15.016 seconds to pace the 25 drivers in attendance.
Mark McFarland, driver of the No. 81s Sears Auto Center Chevrolet, clipped off the second quickest lap with a time of 15.065 seconds. McFarland has won two of his three starts at SNRP.
Clay Rogers, driver of the No. 54s C&C Boiler Chevrolet, was third quick on the scoring pylon, turning in a time of 15.070 seconds. Rogers won the pole at SNRP back in July.
Benny Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford, was fourth with a time of 15.070 seconds. Gordon will be making his first start at SNRP on Saturday night with hopes of hanging on to his 45-point lead in the standings.
Jeff Agnew, driver of the No. 73n Team 7 Ford, completed the top five with a lap of 15.088 seconds.
The session was slowed once for caution when Derek Kale lost an engine in the first half of the session. However, his team swapped motors before the session was over and Kale made a handful of shakedown laps.
