President Bush and Mrs. Bush welcomed Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy for an Official Visit to the White House on Columbus Day. The President and the Prime Minister share a strong commitment to the values of freedom, and Italy is making vital contributions to democracy and stability in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans, Lebanon, and elsewhere around the world.

President Bush met with the President's Working Group on Financial Markets and made a statement on the economy. Later, the President will sign S.3001, the Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009. Afterwards, he traveled to the Pentagon and participated in U.S. Department of Defense briefings. This afternoon, President Bush participated in a photo opportunity and made remarks to the the Detroit Red Wings.

President Bush met with his Cabinet on the subject of financial markets. Afterwards, heparticipated in a video teleconference with Iraq Provincial Reconstruction Team leaders and Brigade Combat Commanders to discuss the important progress they are making in communities around Iraq. In the afternoon, President Bush traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan and participated in a lunch with local business leaders. Later, he attended a Congressional Trust 2008 reception.

President Bush visited the Department of State. Later, he signed H.R. 7222, the Andean Trade Preference Act Extension, which ensures that products from several of our trading partners in South American continue to enter the United States duty-free. With this bill, the United States is showing its commitment to economic growth in our hemisphere – and to a global system based on free and open trade.

President Bush made remarks on the economy and a statement on the Visa Waiver Program.

We're a country where all people have the freedom to realize their potential and chase their dreams.
