MICROSOFT UNLEASHES NEW EMBEDDED OS
Microsoft says it has released its new embedded operating system for
x86-based devices to product manufacturers. Windows Embedded Standard
2009 combines Windows XP codebase updates with new versions of Internet
Explorer, RDP (remote desktop protocol), Windows Media Player, and .NET.

ALL-IN-ONE "NETTOP" HAS TOUCHSCREEN DISPLAY
Asus is apparently set to release an all-in-one "nettop" computer that
includes an integrated touchscreen. The "Eee Top" reportedly has a
15-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard
drive, and a gigabit Ethernet port.

VEST-POCKET VISTA PC UNVEILED
Asus announced a MID (mobile internet device) that uses Intel's Atom
Z520 processor and runs Windows Vista. The Asus R50A includes a
"sunlight readable" 5.6-inch touchscreen display, from 8GB to 32GB of
SSD (solid state disk) storage, dual cameras, GPS, and optional TV tuner.

WINDOWS CE PND SPORTS HEADS-UP DISPLAY
Asus announced a "revolutionary" Windows CE PND (personal navigation
device) that projects directions, speed, and other information onto a
car windshield. In addition to its HUD (heads up display), the "R710"
includes a five-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, a microSD expansion
slot, plus A/V playback.

SIGNAGE APPLIANCE REACTS TO REAL WORLD
DT Research has announced a digital signage system claimed capable of
reacting to nearby events. The "WebDT Event Trigger Digital Signage
System" relies on a Windows XP appliance (left) with a 1.5GHz processor,
eight "trigger ports," four USB ports, and fanless operation.

WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE HAS FINGERPRINT SENSOR
British carrier O2 has introduced a Windows Mobile 6.0 phone that
includes a built-in fingerprint sensor. The "XDA Mantle" also includes
GPS, HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) telephony, WiFi, dual SD
slots, and a three megapixel camera.

HTC SPINS WIMAX PHONE?
HTC, which earlier this week nixed U.S. release of its high-end Touch HD
Windows Mobile phone, could have another trick under its sleeve. It is
reportedly readying the "T8290," a WiMAX-enabled phone (left) that would
be compatible with Sprint's new "4G" XOHM network.

MICROSOFT VOIP SERVER ADDS PHONE FEATURES
Microsoft has announced a new release of its unified VoIP, messaging,
and collaboration platform. "Office Communications Server 2007 Release
2" will allow Windows Mobile phones to operate as an integral part of
office telephone systems.

BUDGET SMARTPHONE ADDS GPS, WIFI
Motorola has added to its "Q" series of mobile phones with a new device
using Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard. The Moto Q 11 includes a 2.4-inch
display, QWERTY keyboard, three megapixel camera, 802.11b/g wireless
networking, and GPS.
