Where 2.0 2009

Where 2.0 Call for Participation is Open - Submit a Proposal

Where 2.0 Conference 2009
May 19-21, 2009
San Jose, CA

Shape the future of the GIS industry at O'Reilly Where 2.0

Call for proposals is now open. Submit your proposal for Where 2.0 by December 2, 2008. We're looking for bold ideas about the future of location-based technology.

In just a few short years, GPS has emerged from military satellites to become ubiquitous -- in our cars, on our phones, on our desktops, in our cameras. Today, generating a realistic map is as simple as a button click. Tomorrow... what new tools, applications, and access to data will shape the way we find our way in the world? Those are just some of the questions we'll be asking (and answering) at Where 2.0, the premier conference of the location-based industry.

We want to hear from industry practitioners, university researchers, loft-based start-ups, venture-backed entrepreneurs, visionaries working with farmers in India, humanitarians bringing relief to disaster-stricken areas. Where 2.0 is your ideal platform to share your ideas, your technologies, and your from-the-trenches experience about what's working in the geospatial industry, and what's coming next.

For three days, Where 2.0 will bring together hundreds of your colleagues in the geo-spatial industry in a conference featuring high profile keynotes from visionary leaders, informative panel discussions, lightning talks, eye-opening demos, and a full day of workshops that teach the latest tools, tips, and techniques.

These are just some of the issues we want to explore when Where 2.0 commences:

  • Local Search and Advertising: With thousands of mashups on the web offering mapping and data services, who will compete with Google to be the ad platform of choice? Is this the business model that will support the huge cost of data acquisition?
  • Immersive & 3D Imagery: Now that cell phones and digital cameras are equipped with location aware technology our world is being documented to an unprecedented degree. With device manufacturers buying mapping companies, and Internet giants investing in cameras, p***s, and satellites, what can consumers expect to see under their tree this coming holiday season?
  • New Business Models: How are businesses leveraging the value in geodata? What promising new services are about to turn a profit? We'll be looking at location-enabled phones, data mining and city search services, and crowdsourcing as platforms for new business.
  • Location Aware Phones: As mobile phone networks become faster and cell phones grow more powerful, what are the possibilities for bringing geo data to the handset?
  • Social Activism: Public health challenges, epidemics, drought, fire, flood, famine. What geo data tools can promise early detection and an effective response to global peril and local safety?
  • Mapping Collaboration: Digital mapping tables provide colleagues with the same view along with editing capabilities, and the ability to turn on and off layers. Will they put an end to paper maps?
  • The Business of Geospatial: Sensor networks, virtual worlds, and enterprise applications. How are groundbreaking ideas being rolled out in industrial strength, real-world applications.
  • Government 2.0: Governments are treasure troves of data of public data. Increasingly they are releasing it online for free. How will data aid both the citizen and government agencies?

If your company is developing new products, new services and new technologies in the location-based arena, we want to hear from you. We're looking for real world examples, game-changing scenarios, roll-up your sleeves tutorials, and focused presentations designed to convey practical, useful information.

Submit your proposal to speak at Where 2.0. Proposals are due by December 2; registration opens January 2009.

Make a note, we are in San Jose this year for the conference.

Thank you,
