Burton Wins At Lowe's
Running short on fuel and fending off a fast closing Kasey Kahne, Jeff Burton was up on the wheel and driving hard in the final twenty laps in Saturday night's Bank of America 500. Burton won the race by 0.946 seconds over Kahne, who was going for his third straight win at Lowe's. It was Burton's third victory at Lowe's Motor Speedway -- his second win this year in the Cup Series and the twenty-first of his 506 race career. Burton also jumped up in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standing to second place, 69 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson. "It's just an incredible feeling when you turn into victory ***," said Burton, "We're halfway," Burton said of this year's title race. "There's a long way to go. I keep telling everybody that, but they keep wanting to give somebody the trophy right now. All those other guys have a tremendous amount to lose. We've got nothing to lose."
Kahne made up a lot of time on Burton in the final laps but ran out of time and had to settle for second. "I tried catching him and just came up a little bit short," said Kahne, who rallied after losing a lap in the first half of the race. "It was a fun run. The track is great -- you can move all over."

Kurt Busch, who was using the new R6 Dodge engine, finished a strong third. “Man, we had a good run. I’m real surprised by it," Busch said. "We mixed the 77 (Hornish) set up with the 12 (Newman). We tested so poorly here with the Miller Lite Dodge …we couldn’t run what the 2 car had. It feels real good to have team communication and bring all this together. This is the first time for the new engine, the R6 in the top five. We were pushing hard trying to get numbers on it (the new engine) for next year. It’s just a big rebound from where we were in Kansas a few weeks ago."
Kurt Busch's little brother Kyle finished in the fourth spot and Jamie McMurray has an excellent run to secure fifth place. Jimmie Johnson was sixth followed by Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and David Ragan to round out the top ten. -- The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the sixth race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the October 19th, Tums QuikPak 500 at Martinsville Speedway. The race begins at 1:30 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 1:00 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and MRN radio

UPDATE: General Motors Corp. approached Ford Motor Co. in recent months about a possible merger but Ford called off the talks after the Dearborn, Mich. auto maker concluded it should continue to go it alone, according to a person directly familiar with the talks. GM and Ford already have a joint venture involving six-speed transmissions and have talked about expanding that partnership to include powertrains, according to sources familiar with the discussions.(Wall Street Journal)(10-12-2008) Comment here
Latest Ganassi merger rumor? Petty; GEM to Toyota? Trying to pin down the state of Petty Enterprises, under its new Boston Ventures' management, and the future of the Chip Ganassi operation has been tough enough the last few weeks, but now the speculation of a GM-Chrysler corporate merger has thrown things into a real tizzy. Insiders at both the Petty and Ganassi Dodge camps say there is speculation that the two struggling teams may somehow merge, and that that speculation is fueled by the sense that fellow Dodge owner George Gillett, who has majority interest in Gillett-Evernham-Motorsports, is "99 percent" certain to jump to Toyota. Ray Evernham was Dodge's mainstay in NASCAR racing, making such a move highly unusual. Dodge officials a few weeks ago denied such a change might be coming. One major complication for Dodge teams like Petty's and Ganassi's is that Gillett-Evernham has been a major Dodge engine operation. If Gillett moves to Toyota, then Dodge loses a very big player.(Winston-Salem Journal)(10-12-2008) Comment here

Edwards and Harvick met with NASCAR president Mike Helton, vice president of competition Robin Pemberton and series director John Darby following the drivers' meeting. There will be no fines and neither was placed on probation.(ESPN.com)(10-12-2008) Comment here
Inman receives Smokey Yunick Award: Legendary Petty Enterprises crew chief Dale Inman was awarded the Smokey Yunick Award prior to the start of the Bank of America 500 at Lowe's (N.C.) Motor Speedway. The award acknowledges outstanding achievement in the world of motorsports. Inman, the most decorated crew chief in NASCAR history, joined several of his colleagues with this recognition, including Glen and Leonard Wood, Ralph Moody and Bud Moore. While no driver has ever won more than Petty's seven NASCAR Sprint Cup titles, Inman has won eight as a crew chief. All seven of Petty's championships came under Inman's watch, along with 198 of his 200 record-setting wins. He won his eighth and final championship with Terry Labonte in 1984.(MCG Sprots/Petty Enterprises PR)(10-12-2008)

UNILEVER TEAMS WITH JR MOTORSPORTS TO BOOST NASCAR INVOLVEMENT
Consumer Products Giant Aligns with Racing's Most Popular and Respected Drivers for
Multi-Brand Sponsorship Program
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (October 10, 2008) – Unilever, a multi-national company that owns more than 400 of the world's most recognized food and home care brands, will be a primary sponsor for JR Motorsports' No. 5 Chevrolets in 10 NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2009. The partnership was announced by Dale Earnhardt Jr. today at a news conference at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
The 10-race sponsorship package will be divided amongst four popular Unilever brands – Hellmann's® mayonnaise, Ragu® pasta sauce, Klondike® ice cream, and Lipton® tea. Three different drivers will compete in select races in the Unilever-branded No. 5 car – two-time series champion Earnhardt Jr., all-time wins leader Mark Martin, and current Raybestos Rookie-Of-The-Year contender Landon Cassill. Martin and Earnhardt Jr. alone combine for 70 NASCAR Nationwide Series victories.
"Unilever is thrilled to associate our brands with two of racing's most popular and respected drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin, and with one of the sport's top rising talents, Landon Cassill," said Marc Shaw, Director of Integrated Marketing for Unilever. "By partnering with Dale Jr. and JR Motorsports, we are expanding an already successful history with NASCAR – especially with a driver whose popularity transcends motor racing with wide appeal and recognition. We are extremely pleased that Dale, Mark and Landon will represent our brands in the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series."
The select races that will feature Unilever brands on the No. 5 Chevrolet are still being finalized. However, it is confirmed that Earnhardt Jr. will kick off the partnership by piloting the No. 5 Hellmann's Chevy in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 14. Five of Earnhardt Jr.'s 22 Nationwide Series victories have come at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
"I am really excited to partner with Unilever and continue what we've been able to accomplish with JR Motorsports," said Earnhardt Jr., who co-owns the No. 5 team with Rick Hendrick. "In a short amount of time, we've gone from an upstart, single-car team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series to having two highly competitive teams that won races in 2008. When we merged our Nationwide Series operations with Hendrick Motorsports last year, it really elevated our program to the next level. Having Unilever come on board will help us continue that momentum."
The 2009 campaign will mark the second consecutive year that Earnhardt Jr., Martin and Cassill share driving duties in the No. 5 Chevrolet. Martin, whose 48 Nationwide Series victories are the most of any driver, kick-started JR Motorsports' breakout season with a win in the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 1. It was the first of two wins achieved by the No. 5 team this year, and the first of four that JR Motorsports has celebrated among its two full-time teams thus far in 2008.
Like Martin, Cassill has played a contributing role in the team's success this year. The 19-year-old driver from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, scored a career-best finish of sixth at Gateway International Raceway on July 19, and he won the pole for the June 28 race at New Hampshire International Speedway. Cassill currently holds a one-point lead in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.
"We know that NASCAR fans crave real food that tastes great and is made from simple, ingredients; we're all about real food for real fans," said James Fish, Senior Brand Manager for Hellmann's and Best Foods. "One of the main platforms for our involvement in NASCAR has been to search for and reward 'real' fans, and we plan to continue and even expand our campaign with Dale Jr., Mark Martin, and Landon Cassill, three NASCAR drivers who are real in every sense of the word."

"This unique consumer promotion allows fans to follow the Gillette Young Guns drivers throughout the Chase and have a chance to win their own opportunity to compete for the Gillette TimeShaver Trophy," said Michelle Potorski, Associate Marketing Director, Gillette Male Blades and Razors. "Race fans know that precision on pit road is like the precision of our razors, the slightest advantage leads to remarkable results."
From now until the final race of the Chase on November 16 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, fans can visit participating retailers to purchase specially marked Gillette Fusion Razors that include one of six Gillette Young Guns Trading Cards. Each Gillette Young Guns Trading Card contains a special code that can be entered at GilletteYoungGuns.com. After registering the code, consumers will receive an e-mail confirming their registration. Fans can enter each time they purchase the specially marked Gillette Fusion Razors.
In its fifth year, the Gillette Young Guns program continues to be a successful marketing platform for Gillette. Throughout its tenure, the Gillette Young Guns drivers have captured a combined four NASCAR Cup Championships and four Daytona 500 victories.

Rockingham, N.C.-You didn’t even have to ask the Hooters Pro Cup drivers testing at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway what they thought of the historic facility during Saturday’s open test, you could see it in their eyes.
"Everybody in this garage area started driving racecars because they wanted to go fast. When you come to Rockingham, you’re going fast," said Clay Rogers, a two-time Hooters Pro Cup Champion. "That’s why you see everybody’s eyes lit up around here. This place is a different animal than we’re used to."
The Black’s Tire America 200 on Saturday, Nov. 1 will be the third time the Hooters Pro Cup Series has competed on a mile-long track, but the race will be the first time the series has done so at Rockingham Speedway.
"This is a great venue for us," said Rogers, driver of the No. 54s C&C Boiler Chevrolet. "You have to put this in the same category as Iowa, Bristol and Milwaukee. But I don’t know if any of those tracks have the storied history of great finishes coming off Turn 4 on the last lap like Rockingham does."
Rogers was just one of the 20 drivers taking part in the test session, but his sentiments were echoed throughout the garage area.
