Chrysler, GM discuss merger, acquisition: General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC have held preliminary talks about a merger or an acquisition of Chrysler by GM, according to published reports. The Wall Street Journal, citing people it described as familiar with the discussions, reported that Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns 80.1 percent of Chrysler and 51 percent of GMAC Financial Services, proposed trading Chrysler's automotive operations to GM. The Journal said Cerberus would receive GM's remaining 49 percent stake in GMAC. The New York Times, also citing people familiar with the talks, reported that the automakers were discussing a merger. The Times did not mention GMAC, a traditional auto lender hit hard by the housing market downturn. The talks have stalled because of the recent turmoil in the financial markets, according to the Journal. Its sources said negotiations could resume if markets stabilize because both GM
and Cerberus want to quickly divest the assets under discussion.(Associated Press/Yahoo), no idea how this would affect Dodge or Chevy in NASCAR.(10-11-2008) Comment here
Allmendinger still working on ride for 2009: AJ Allmendinger says that while he knows what he’ll be doing for the remainder of 2008, he still doesn’t have anything finalized for next year. Allmendinger is driving the #00 Michael Waltrip Racing car this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and then will drive the #10 Gillett Evernham Motorsports car for the final five races of the 2008 Sprint Cup season. He has talked with Chip Ganassi Racing about its #41 car opening but he said he hasn’t heard too much the last couple of weeks. "That’s kind of been a little bit quiet, but until the seat is taken, I hope I’m always a candidate," he said. "I’ve got no contracts, no obligations to anybody except for these six races, and that’s kind of the way I’m taking it."(Scene Daily)(10-11-2008) Comment here
Special helmet for Smith at LMS: Doug Warf, Director of Community Relations and Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation for the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that NASCAR driver #01-Regan Smith will wear a special Carolina Hurricanes-themed helmet on Saturday, Oct. 11, during the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. Smith is wearing the Hurricanes-themed helmet this weekend to draw attention to the start of the 2008-09 NHL season, and will donate the helmet to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation for a charity auction following the race. The 25-year-old driver of DEI/Principal Financial Group’s #01 Chevy, is in the hunt for Sprint Cup Series rookie of the year honors, and is coming off of a controversial finish in last weekend’s AMP Energy 500 at Talladega. Smith is a self-proclaimed “Caniac,” who moved to Mooresville, NC, in 1995 from his hometown of Cato, NY.(hurricanes.nhl.com)(10-11-2008)

UNILEVER TEAMS WITH JR MOTORSPORTS TO BOOST NASCAR INVOLVEMENT
Consumer Products Giant Aligns with Racing's Most Popular and Respected Drivers for
Multi-Brand Sponsorship Program
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (October 10, 2008) – Unilever, a multi-national company that owns more than 400 of the world's most recognized food and home care brands, will be a primary sponsor for JR Motorsports' No. 5 Chevrolets in 10 NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2009. The partnership was announced by Dale Earnhardt Jr. today at a news conference at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
The 10-race sponsorship package will be divided amongst four popular Unilever brands – Hellmann's® mayonnaise, Ragu® pasta sauce, Klondike® ice cream, and Lipton® tea. Three different drivers will compete in select races in the Unilever-branded No. 5 car – two-time series champion Earnhardt Jr., all-time wins leader Mark Martin, and current Raybestos Rookie-Of-The-Year contender Landon Cassill. Martin and Earnhardt Jr. alone combine for 70 NASCAR Nationwide Series victories.
"Unilever is thrilled to associate our brands with two of racing's most popular and respected drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin, and with one of the sport's top rising talents, Landon Cassill," said Marc Shaw, Director of Integrated Marketing for Unilever. "By partnering with Dale Jr. and JR Motorsports, we are expanding an already successful history with NASCAR – especially with a driver whose popularity transcends motor racing with wide appeal and recognition. We are extremely pleased that Dale, Mark and Landon will represent our brands in the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series."
The select races that will feature Unilever brands on the No. 5 Chevrolet are still being finalized. However, it is confirmed that Earnhardt Jr. will kick off the partnership by piloting the No. 5 Hellmann's Chevy in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 14. Five of Earnhardt Jr.'s 22 Nationwide Series victories have come at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
"I am really excited to partner with Unilever and continue what we've been able to accomplish with JR Motorsports," said Earnhardt Jr., who co-owns the No. 5 team with Rick Hendrick. "In a short amount of time, we've gone from an upstart, single-car team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series to having two highly competitive teams that won races in 2008. When we merged our Nationwide Series operations with Hendrick Motorsports last year, it really elevated our program to the next level. Having Unilever come on board will help us continue that momentum."
The 2009 campaign will mark the second consecutive year that Earnhardt Jr., Martin and Cassill share driving duties in the No. 5 Chevrolet. Martin, whose 48 Nationwide Series victories are the most of any driver, kick-started JR Motorsports' breakout season with a win in the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 1. It was the first of two wins achieved by the No. 5 team this year, and the first of four that JR Motorsports has celebrated among its two full-time teams thus far in 2008.
Like Martin, Cassill has played a contributing role in the team's success this year. The 19-year-old driver from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, scored a career-best finish of sixth at Gateway International Raceway on July 19, and he won the pole for the June 28 race at New Hampshire International Speedway. Cassill currently holds a one-point lead in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.
"We know that NASCAR fans crave real food that tastes great and is made from simple, ingredients; we're all about real food for real fans," said James Fish, Senior Brand Manager for Hellmann's and Best Foods. "One of the main platforms for our involvement in NASCAR has been to search for and reward 'real' fans, and we plan to continue and even expand our campaign with Dale Jr., Mark Martin, and Landon Cassill, three NASCAR drivers who are real in every sense of the word."

Oct. 11 NASCAR Nationwide Series:MIKE WALLACE, No. 7 GEICO Toyota Camry, Germain Racing Finished: 10th Can you talk about your top-10 finish tonight? “Lowe’s (Motor Speedway) is a track where I’ve enjoyed a lot of good runs, I was tenth here in May on the white flag lap, but, I was wrecked out coming to take the checkered. That’s kind of been my luck here. Great runs, without the finishes. The GEICO Camry was excellent tonight. We had no adjustments on pit road -- the car was that good. The GEICO crew did a great job putting the car back together after our trip through the grass and I am really happy we were able to come out of the Dollar General 300 with a top-ten finish.” (Toyota Racing)

Post-race quotes from third-place finisher, Brian Vickers-Did you think your car would be this good after the accident in qualifying? “I knew the quality of the equipment that Braun and Dollar General put behind us. Trent (Owens, crew chief) and all the guys did a great job getting the car ready, period, much less capable of running in the top-three. We had a really good night -- we were missing a couple key components, but unfortunately we just couldn’t find them. For a backup car -- we’ll take a third- place finish and I’m really proud of Dollar General sponsoring the race. We won four Toyota Tundras for some fans and I’m really happy about that.” Does this feel almost like a victory? “In a lot of ways it does. I’m really proud of the Dollar General guys and the Braun guys and all the guys on the team that put this car together. The way the impound deal works, when you wreck one in qualifying
it’s all you can do to get it ready for the race much less capable of running in the top-three. I’m really proud of their effort there. It was a good top-three, but we obviously wanted that win. Considering the circumstances we’ll take it. (Toyota Racing) (10-11-08)
: Post-race quotes from winner Kyle Busch“It's definitely pretty awesome to be back in victory *** especially at Lowe's Motor Speedway, one of my favorite tracks. Really got to thank NOS Energy Drink, Z-Line Designs, all these guys on this Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. It was just phenomenal tonight. It was a lot of fun out there to race those guys and have a great win for us. You know, to be back in victory *** feels awesome.” How good was your race car? “The car was phenomenal. It could go anywhere you wanted it to. I could run the top. I could run the bottom. I managed to stay on the bottom just so I didn't burn up the right front tire. Really want to thank the fans for sticking around tonight. I know it was a long show with the rain delays and whatnot. I'm glad they all hung out. And, of course, the ones on TV, as well.” Did you have some issues on the restarts? “You know, you're not supposed to leave any room behind you, or in front of you I should say on (Jeff) Burton's part. He was back there about a car length, a car length and a half, or so. And I could see him carrying up to my rear bumper and he had the momentum and I wasn't going to let him have the momentum on the restarts cause he'd pull low and pass me getting into (turn) one. So, I waited until he got to my rear bumper and then I went. He had to stop and I went. That's what jumbled up the field back there and everything. I apologize to those guys back there, but I got a race to win, too.” What does it mean for you to win again at Charlotte? “It was a phenomenal night for us. That car was pretty strong -- we didn’t think it was that strong yesterday. We felt like we had some motor issues with it so we changed the ignition and some stuff -- the distributor, carburetor and all that. It seems as though it all ran well today so thankfully it all worked out and that NOS Energy Drink Toyota was just fast. It was pretty phenomenal to drive -- a lot of fun and a great race car to be able to run on the top, run on the bottom and pass cars any which way we needed to. Fortunately, it was pretty hard to make a mistake on pit road on what to do with it -- we could take two tires or no tires and just pretty much stay out front. The car was fast enough that it could hold its own pace.” Do you think you should have competed for the NNS championship? “No -- it’s a lot more fun to not have to worry about points and just go out there and race for wins. I was thinking about that while I was out there -- where I would be if I just gave myself a 10th-place finish in the races that I missed -- that I could calculate the points and see where I was. I don’t know where that would put me. It’s a lot easier to go out there and race everybody and all the competitors for wins instead of having to concentrate on a particular guy or a particular couple guys and seeing what they do week in and week out. A bit of a drizzle is falling right now, but the open test session should get going around 12 p.m.
Most of the players in the Championship Series are here for the optional test session. The only two drivers not in the top 10 that aren’t here are Jay Fogleman and Hunter Robbins.
Teams will not be using transponders, so live scoring will not be available today. I will try and update unofficial times throughout today’s session. The test will run from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
