Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

The stock market may not be looking too 'crash hot' at the moment, so what better time to quench emotions with some great wines. Enter Winehouse! Last week, we held our Shiraz of Australia tasting with some excellent Shiraz on show!! Even though we were competing with the AFL Grand Final, we had a great turnout and a fun day was had by all. The next Saturday tasting will be the Plenty o' Pinot tasting on the 1st November - check the Tasting Calendar for dates and details. With both the Mount Mary Dinners completed (they were both fabulous nights) and the Icon Dinner completely sold out, we are busily planning our next dinner before Christmas, so stay tuned. Matt and Gill have picked out some new wines for you to check out and this week's Wine House trivia is a "Who Am I?" question - give it a go for your chance at a $30 voucher!

We hope you enjoy,

From the Team at Wine House

This week @ Wine House -

Solitary Block "The Juice" Grenache Rose!
An unbeatable "wine drinker's" Rose - under $19!!!!

Yesterday, Ben and Mario Barletta (of Aus Dom Wines) dropped in our allocation of their 2008 releases. Among these were their new reds, including the Kalimna Shiraz 2006 and Marananga Shiraz 2006 and the Rowland Flat Grenache 2006 and Onkaparinga Hills Grenache 2006. This year, the boys have also released a wine they made with the intention of drinking it ALL themselves - a Rose! Luckily, someone suggested they should sell this little beast! Reluctantly, they agreed...

As Mario said himself, "This is what WE drink at the end of the day!". "The Juice" is a fantastic Rose made from the same fruit that is put in to make the Rowland Flat Grenache. In short, this is a wine drinker's Rose - it is a creation of the boys who brought us Gaelic Cemetery after all (pre-release offer coming out soon!). It has an immediately creamy, alluring nose which opens up to spicy summer berry characters. Dry, savoury and incredibly drinkable, this is a wine that will go well with or without food, day or night.

Solitary Block "The Juice" Grenache Rose 2007

$17.06 in a dozen | $18.95 per bottle

Saturday Tastings - Plenty o' Pinot!!

Saturday the 1st November @ Winehouse - 2-4pm - FREE!!

No grape variety is more vulnerable to the vagaries of soil and climate than Pinot Noir. Sometimes known as the "heartbreak grape", Pinot is a variety grown only by the adventurous and patient and, as Parker states, "When it's great, Pinot noir produces the most complex, hedonistic, and remarkably thrilling red wine in the world...". Come to this tasting and find out why for yourself....

Available on tasting will be:

- Mount Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2007

- Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir 2006

- Delta 'Hatters Hill' Pinot Noir 2006

- Helen's Hill Pinot Noir 2006

- Dalrymple Pinot Noir 2006

- Yabby Lake Pinot Noir 2006

As always, the tasting, and the learning, is free! Nibbles to cleanse your palates will be on hand!

Old & Rare Wines - Matt & Gill's Staff Picks!

Matt's 3 Picks!

Kalleske Clarry's Grenache Shiraz 2007, Barossa Valley, SA.

Unbeatable Barossa Value!
This is fast becoming one of my favourite wines of the Barossa. It shows a fantastic nose with raspberry and spice, combined with floral hints and vanilla. Although fruit may be the star here, the Clarry's Red (named after Troy Kalleske's grandfather) keeps your palate captivated by displaying defined tannins and fantastic length. Bursting with chocolate, raspberry, mocha hints and blackberries, it is not at all "sweet" or jammy - savoury notes and acid give it a wonderful backbone. It really is one of the BEST Barossans for under $20!

$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Ten Minutes by Tractor Pinot Noir 2006, Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

James Halliday 91 Points!

Without a doubt, the team at Ten Minutes by Tractor have worked hard to become one of the leading wineries of the Mornington region. Richard McIntyre and Martin Spedding (owner) look after the winemaking, with Chardonnay and Pinot being the standouts. Using 100% wild ferment yeast, this Pinot is nothing short of mesmerizing. Stunning strawberry notes with wild forest berries show on the nose. The palate is even better. A fantastic balance of sweet fruit and velvety texture combine with finesse and delicacy to create a truly stunning wine. One glass is simply not enough!

$51.75 in a dozen | $57.50 per bottle

De Bortoli Yarra Reserve Chardonnay 2006, Yarra Valley, VIC.
Jeremy Oliver 96 Points!

Gary Walsh 95 Points!
With this only being the fourth release of their Reserve Chardonnay, I ask the question - "Why not earlier?". This is such a tremendous wine, undoubtedly rivaling some of the other Yarra Valley standouts. With a focus on texture and minerality in this vintage, the result is very impressive. Linear and pure, the exciting line of citrus gives it great structure. The oak is absolutely seamless, the leesy nougat notes are ever-so-delicate, the acidity is perfect and the length is spellbinding. This sits at the top of my list of '08 releases. Only 250 dozen were produced, so be quick!
$42.75 in a dozen | $47.50 per bottle

Gill's 3 Picks!

Stella Bella Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Margaret River, WA.

James Halliday 91 Points!

Stella Bella is one of the Margaret River's most consistent producers with every vintage producing wines of the highest quality with a silky smoothness running through all the varieties. The 2007 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is no exception. The wine is highly aromatic with a grassy, gooseberry and grapefruit lift on the nose. The gooseberry character follows onto the palate and the refreshing citrus finish is long and satisfying. This is a beautiful wine for Spring to enjoy either on its own or with a crisp Caesar salad.

$17.96 RRP | $19.95 per bottle

Villa Trasqua Chianti Classico 2005, Tuscany, ITA.
We have been busy at the Winehouse sourcing some European wines that won't break the bank, are representative of their origins (i.e. have not been 'fruited up' for the Australian palate) but are still highly drinkable. We are very excited to have come across the Villa Trasqua range which have been imported in small amounts to this country with great expense to ensure they arrive in peak condition. Made from classic Chianti varieties; 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo, the wine shows ethereal aromas with floral notes, marked freshness and great harmony with fabulous taste progression. Match this wine with salami and pecorino cheese.
$17.96 RRP | $19.95 per bottle

Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz 2006, Barossa Valley, SA.

Make no mistake, Ben Glaetzer wines are in a league of their own and are fast becoming highly sought after. This award winning wine maker has gone from strength to strength. The Glaetzer Family has been a part of the Barossa Valley and its viticulture history since 1888 so the wines come with a pedigree. Surprisingly, this wine is very approachable now, but will certainly reward cellaring. Aromas of liquorice and mocha intermingle with cassis and leather. Opulent fruit flavours on the palate are beautifully balanced by firm, velvety tannins from maturation in French and American oak. Glaetzer's BEST bishop (in his words)!

$31.46 in a dozen | $34.95 per bottle

Wine House Trivia

Last week's question was...

Name the first four doctors (and their wineries) who established vineyards in the Yarra Valley's second generation of winemaking?

Congratulations Yelena!

"Dr John Middleton- Mount Mary (founded M. Mary vineyard site in 1971)
Dr Bailey Carrodus- Yarra Yering (his 1973 vintage was the first commercial wine produced in the Yarra since 1921).
Dr Peter McMahon- Seville Estate (vines first planted in 1972)
Dr Jack Church- Warramate Wines (industrial chemist who first starting planting vines in 1969)."

Thanks to Barry who also noted that Dr Carrodus, of Yarra Yering, has recently passed away. Dr Carrodus was occasionally prickly and sometimes idiosyncratic, but he was a lovely warm, gentle, and generous man who will be missed and very fondly remembered by many.

This week's question is...

I contribute to produce wines that are often somewhere between light and medium body. I have a naturally high level of acidity, and can express myself as a sour cherry note on the palate with hints of almond. I am the main grape used (in conjunction with others) to produce a European straw wine. Which grape variety am I?

DECANTING WINES

Wine House recommends that any wine shipped to you  stands for one day before opening. This will allow the wine to settle after transport and for any aged sediment to sink slowly to the bottom of the bottle.

Decanting all table wine is recommended, particularly red wine. By pouring wine into a decanter, or any jug, and  allowing oxygen to come in contact with the wine, the aromas of the wine will broaden and tannins will soften. This is what is known as breathing the wine.

Decanting aged wine is required to remove sediment from the wine poured to guests more so than wine breathing. Therefore stop pouring an aged wine into your decanter once sediment is seen.

Young wine generally require more time in a decanter. As a guide the further the wine is from maturity the more time it will be needed in a decanter prior to the ideal wine condition for serving, and remember individual taste dictates what maturity is and should you feel the wine is not ready a second decanter to rapidly breath the wine may be needed.
