This week on BBC World... Week commencing  24th February 2007

  News This Week
The week ahead will start with a dose of glamour on BBC World with coverage of the 79th Annual Academy Awards from Hollywood.  From the stars of the big screen to science - later in the week a news team will be live from Geneva covering a crucial phase in the world's largest international research effort.  The Large Hadron Collider will be able to recreate the conditions that existed just after the Big Bang.  BBC World will also have special coverage from Ypres, the Belgian municipality, where a team of archaeologists are searching for a tunnel complex beneath the battlefield at Paschendale, which saw terrible losses in World War I.

Reports throughout the week

  Drowning In Oil
In 1985, the United States discovered large oil reserves in Equatorial Guinea. Since then, big American oil corporations and other western companies have landed there and transformed the country. It now has one of the highest GDPs in the world and many people are starting to call it "Africa's Kuwait". The programme travels to Equatorial Guinea to see what happens in a Third World country, which suddenly finds itself rolling in money and asks whether the country is drowning in oil.

The World Uncovered is a powerful international current affairs strand, which confronts strong, hard-hitting stories that affect people's lives around the world, including exclusive investigations into the most contentious global issues. This week, the programme investigates the Chinese Government's claim that 40 million men will be permanent bachelors within 15 years. This is because, according to official figures, about 117 boys are born for every 100 girls. The World Uncovered investigates some of the many reasons given for this, including selective abortion or infanticide, under-reporting of female births and adoption.

  Have Your Say
This week, Have Your Say will discuss the decision of the British and Danish governments to withdraw troops from Iraq.  Other coalition countries are also looking to reduce their presence or pull out completely.  Plans for this reduced activity comes while the US continues with its strategy of troop 'surge'.  Presenter Lucy Hockings leads the discussion and asks whether there is a contradiction in the coalition's approach to Iraq, and what impact the troop changes will have on security in the country. The programme will debate whether this move is an indication that Iraqi forces are ready to take over security in some areas, and will see what soldiers, their families and Iraqis think about the recent announcements.
