Wild & Scenic Rivers Act Turns 40!

On October 2, 1968 President Johnson signed into law the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, with the goal of protecting our country's wild river heritage and all the benefits wild rivers bring to our communities.

American Rivers President, Rebecca Wodder recently said, “Today, the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System is one of our country's most important natural resource programs and protecting Wild and Scenic rivers enjoys strong bi-partisan support. There are 165 Wild and Scenic rivers around the country. The Missouri River explored by Lewis and Clark, the Delaware River that cradled the American Revolution, and the Tuolumne River loved by John Muir are all protected by this visionary law.”

40 years later, we hope that you will join us in celebrating the landmark legislation that helped pave the way for recreational access and river conservation on so many of our storied waterways by showing your support for the preservation of our last free-flowing rivers. Defining Adventure Since 1969

Fellow Traveler...

O.A.R.S. launched its first official whitewater rafting trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1969. As my wife Pam and I reflect on that milestone – we're now to the 40th anniversary of our company – we celebrate the growth of our family, as well as the expansion of our business and the circle of friends and guests O.A.R.S. has brought into our lives. We also look ahead to the exploration of new rivers and the creation of new itineraries.

We realize you have hundreds of choices when planning your time away, and we appreciate you choosing to travel with O.A.R.S. Still, we know there are as many adventures as there are adventurers, and we’re hoping you’ll come and see for yourself what we have to offer. There is no one way to get to the heart of things, that is why we offer you dozens of trip choices, destinations, activities and arguably the world’s most outstanding guides to lead the way.

The new year, 2009, brings us several new itineraries. A few we thought you might be interested in include: The Tambopata River – a 16-day journey down Peru’s bird- and wildlife-rich Tambopata River and through the Amazon rainforest; Highlands to Islands: The Ultimate Fiji Explorer – an updated and improved classic that beckons you to an exciting exploration of Fiji; Yellowstone/Grand Teton Explorer – a one-of-a-kind multi-sport adventure that will lead you off the beaten path and beyond the boardwalks of Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks to a wild Wyoming that few have seen; The Grand Staircase: Wind & Water on the Colorado Plateau – a 12-day top-to-bottom tour of the Colorado River system and the Colorado Plateau; Yosemite & Tuolumne Hiker – a 5-day guided tour of Yosemite National Park and its surrounding area including a 2-day trip on the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River and a hike to the top of the park’s most iconic rock formation – Half Dome.

And not to be missed are our classic adventures, such as the super family-friendly getaways on the Rogue River in southern Oregon and the Green River through the Gates of Lodore in Colorado. Or consider Idaho's renowned Middle Fork of the Salmon River - second only to the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon as an O.A.R.S. vacation destination and the premiere alpine river experience in the continental U.S.

We invite you to create your own adventure with O.A.R.S. and I hope that you will join us in celebrating our 40th anniversary in 2009.

See you on the river!
