ANDROID DEBUTS
T-Mobile, Google, and HTC announced the first phone based on the
Google-sponsored Android Java/Linux stack. The T-Mobile G1 is due to
ship on October 22 for $180, with 1GB of flash, a 3.2-inch touchscreen
haptic display, a keyboard, and WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

DIGITAL PIANO ADDS LINUX
Yamaha has added embedded Linux to the electronic "player piano" add-on
it offers with some models. With version 3.0 of the Mark IV firmware,
MontaVista Linux controls the 333MHz AMD Geode-based piano, enabling new
interface possibilities, acoustic recording, and interaction with
Web-based services.

OPEN SOURCE PHONE AUDITS NETWORKS
A startup called NeoPwn has customized the OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner to
act as a network security penetration testing device. Booting BackTrack
Linux off a MicroSD card to perform penetration testing (pentesting),
the NeoPwn is the first network auditing distribution for a mobile
phone, claims the company.

LATEST LIMO PHONE TOUTED FOR VOICE CLARIFICATION
Panasonic Mobile Communications is shipping another LiMo (Linux
Mobile)-compliant phone for NTT DoCoMo's FOMA network. The FOMA P706ie
offers a 3-inch QVGA display, a 2-megapixel camera, a 2GB or 8GB memory
card, voice clarification, and video record and playback at up to 15fps.

INDUSTRIAL NETWORKED DVR RUNS LINUX
Taiwanese surveillance system vendor Sanyan Computer is shipping a
Linux-based "NDVR" (networked digital video recorder) aimed at
distributed industrial applications. Based on an X86 processor with
MPEG4 coprocessor, Sanyan's NDVR system can send real-time D1 (DVD
quality) video over a 2Mbps network link.

LINUX DISTRO TARGETS NETBOOK OEMS
Good OS (gOS) has achieved a major new release of its Ubuntu-based
operating system. Targeting OEMs that want quickly customizable Linux
netbook OSes, gOS 3.0 integrates closely with Google Gadgets, as well as
with Google Mail, Calendar, Reader, News, Applications, and Picasa.

MIDS TO OUTSELL NETBOOKS IN FIVE YEARS?
Linux stacks such as Moblin and Maemo will dominate the mobile Internet
device (MID) market, says a report by ABI Research. The firm expects
Moblin to take 42 percent of the market in 2013, when it expects 86
million Linux-enabled MIDs to ship.

EMBEDDED RESEARCH FOUNDATION LAUNCHES
Stockholm-based KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) has established a
research center to foster collaboration between academia and industry on
embedded system design. The Innovative Centre for Embedded Systems
(ICES) has signed up founding members including Ericsson, Scania, and
embedded software company Enea.

NOKIA LINUX TABLETS GO 3G, OMAP3
Nokia's Linux-based web tablets may soon gain faster processors and
built-in 3G cellular modems. Nokia executive Ari Jaaksi revealed today
in a keynote at the Open Source in Mobile show that Nokia will add
3G/HSPA capabilities to an OMAP3-optimized Maemo 5 release for the tablets.
