Dear Cliford,
More exciting events on tap for the rest of the month:Clark Kepler Photo

Coming up this week are three great events on the same night: Somaly Mam at the Menlo Park Library, Christopher Buckley at Michael's at Shoreline, and the fascinating author Jennet Conant at the store!

Unfortunately, Diane Ackerman has had to cancel her tour due to a family emergency.  We wish her well.

Award-winning author and journalist Rick Wartzman will be discussing his book which takes a look at what the Joads experienced in Kern County while Grapes of Wrath was a #1 bestseller.

Stanford professor and leading expert on human development, Bill Damon, will talk about helping our children find their path in life, and Nobel Prize-winner in Physics, Frank Wilczek, will discuss matter and space.

And you certainly won't want to miss Mike Farrell's appearance in which he'll discuss his roles as both actor and activist.

Additionally, Kepler's and Breast Cancer Connections launch Breast Cancer Awareness month with special guest Gail Konop Baker.

We hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Clark Kepler

The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine » BUY NOW
Thursday, September 18, 7:00 p.m.

Location: Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St.

Born in a village deep in the Cambodian forest, Somaly Mam was sold into sexual slavery by a man posing as her grandfather when she was twelve years old. A decade later she managed to escape with the help of a French aid worker. Emboldened by her newfound freedom, education, and security, Somaly blossomed but remained haunted by the girls in the brothels she left behind.

Written in exquisite, spare, unflinching prose, The Road of Lost Innocence recounts the experiences of her early life and tells the story of her awakening as an activist and her harrowing and brave fight against the powerful and corrupt forces that steal the lives of these girls. Her memoir will leave you awestruck by her tenacity and courage and will renew your faith in the power of an individual to bring about change.

Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath » BUY NOW
Wednesday, September 24, 7:30 p.m.

Few books have caused as big a stir as John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath when it was published in April 1939. By May, it was the nation's number one bestseller, but in Kern County, California-the Joads' newfound home-the book was burned publicly and banned from library shelves. Obscene in the Extreme tells the remarkable story behind this fit of censorship.

Rick Wartzman is director of the Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University and an Irvine senior fellow at the New America Foundation. He spent two decades as a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times. He is co-author, with Mark Arax, of the award-winning bestseller The King of California: J.G. Boswell and the Making of a Secret American Empire.

Drawing on the revelatory results of a landmark study, William Damon brilliantly investigates the most pressing issue in the lives of youth today: why so many young people are "failing to launch" -- living at home longer, lacking career motivation, struggling to make a timely transition into adulthood, and not yet finding a life pursuit that inspires them.

One of the world's leading scholars of human development, Damon is Professor of Education at Stanford University and the Director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence. Prior to joining Stanford in 1997, he was University Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Human Development at Brown University.

Friday, September 26, 7:30 p.m.

Physicists' understanding of the essential nature of reality changed radically over the past quarter century. Frank Wilczek has played a lead role in establishing the new paradigms. Transcending the clash and mismatch of older ideas about what matter is, and what space is, Wilczek presents here some brilliant and clear syntheses.

Frank Wilczek won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for work that he did as a 21-year-old graduate student. His 1989 book, Longing for the Harmonies, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Wilczek's work has been anthologized in Best American Science Writing and The Norton Anthology of Light Verse. He is currently the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at MIT.

"The quintessential political novelist of his time." - Fortune Magazine

President of the United States Donald Vanderdamp is having a hell of a time getting his nominees appointed to the Supreme Court. Finally the president chooses someone so beloved by voters that the Senate won't have the guts to reject her - TV Judge Pepper Cartwright, the nation's most popular reality show.

Soon, Pepper finds herself in the middle of a constitutional crisis, a presidential reelection campaign that the president is determined to lose, and oral arguments of a romantic nature. Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and the only Islamic state to have nuclear weapons. It has been under military dictatorship for 33 of its 50 year existence. Yet it is the linchpin in the United States' war on terror, receiving over $10 billion of American aid since 2001 and purchasing more than $5 billion of U.S. weaponry in 2006 alone.

With increasingly bold attacks by Taliban supporters in the border regions threatening to split the Pakistan army, with the only political alternatives -- Nawaz Sharif and Benazir's widower Asif Ali Zardari -- being as corrupt as the regime they seek to replace, and with a newly radicalized movement of lawyers testing its strength as championsof the rule of law, the chances of sustained stability in Pakistan look slim.

The scion of a famous Punjabi political family, with extraordinary contacts inside the country and internationally, Tariq Ali has long been acknowledged as a leading commentator on Pakistan.
