THIS WEEK'S SHOW

blue ribbon
September 13, 2008

Coming up this week on A Prairie Home Companion, it's a special New York City compilation show, with some of Gotham's go-to guests, including Bronx born comedian Robert Klein, Broadway stars Walter Bobbie, Faith Prince, Kristin Chenoweth and Tony Roberts, and an ode to the MTA with subway conductor Steve Lazaro. Robin and Linda Williams' alter-egos (Marvin and Mavis Smiley) flog their latest recording featuring songs about New York, Dusty and Lefty are in for a more liberal interpretation of their "partner" relationship, and cabaret star Maude Maggart sings "Talk of the Town." Plus the story of Bob the Dancer, all coming up this week.

POST TO THE HOST

BERTHA'S KITTY BOUTIQUE

Dear GK,
What happened to Bertha's Kitty Boutique ads on the show?

Alex G.

Bertha's was a big sponsor years ago when I had two cats, Tuna and Ralph, and now that I'm no longer a cat owner, Bertha is not so interested anymore. I wouldn't mind having cats, and my daughter would love to have one or two or four or five, but I have relatives who are allergic to cat dander. And we have some upholstered furniture we would rather not be scratched to shreds. And my family and I love to travel. All of which legislates against cat ownership. Which disqualifies me for Bertha's sponsorship.

NOTHING LIKE A GOOD JOKE

PRETTY GOOD JOKES

Q: Why did the doctor ask for a red crayon?

A: He needed to draw blood.

This joke was sent in by Elisabeth R. of Coralville, Iowa. Thanks Elisabeth!

GOOD TO JUST SIT SOMETIMES, AND BE

The View From Mrs. Sundberg's Window

September 8, 2008

Listened to the show Saturday and it was not bad. I was relaxing at the kitchen table, a bit worn out from a day of wandering around Pancake Fest. Sure enough, it's that time of year again when, every weekend for the rest of the month and into October, you'll have a rough time driving from here to there as nearly every small town in the state has some kind of festival planned. You'll find Cheese Curd Fest and Taco Days, OktoberFest, Cheese Fest, BratFest and PickleFest. (Let me know when they get a Raspberry Bismarck Fest going and I'm there.) There's grape stomping and corn mazes, art fairs and hay rides, farmer's markets and quilt shows — enough to make you crazy if you don't keep things in perspective.

THE OLD SCOUT

A Column by Garrison Keillor

September 2, 2008

The Republicans are meeting down the hill from my house, helicopters are pounding the air, and there are more suits on the streets and big black SUVs and a brownish cloud venting from the hockey arena where the convention is assembled. A large moment for little old St. Paul, which is more accustomed to visitations by conventions of morticians and foundation garment salesmen and the Sons of the Desert, and so we are thrilled. It makes no difference that the city is Democratic. What matters is that, for a few days, TV will show a few pictures of the big bend in the Mississippi, the limestone bluffs, the capitol and cathedral, and a tree-shaded avenue or two, and some of the world will know that we exist...

LIBERTY: A NOVEL OF LAKE WOBEGON

Liberty:A Novel of Lake Wobegon A national holiday in Lake Wobegon is always gaudy and joyful. But what is going on between Clint Bunsen and Miss Liberty?
Everyone is here—Pastor Ingqvist, the Sons of Knute, Sister Arvonne of Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility and her ocarina band, the Norwegian bachelor farmers, Dorothy and the Chatterbox Café, Wally in the Sidetrack Tap—as crowds converge on the little town to celebrate American independence, even as the chairman of the event broods on the great question of the day: Shall we struggle on valiantly here or shall we burst the bonds and find beautiful life in the golden west?
