Tonight On The CBS Evening
News
Here’s an
early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast from
Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:
Hi everyone,
We begin tonight with the comment that has dominated the presidential
campaign today. Last night, Barack Obama compared John McCain’s call
for change to putting “lipstick on a pig.” The McCain campaign
instantly accused the Illinois senator
of a sexist attack on running mate Sarah Palin. Today, Senator Obama fired
back, accusing the Republicans of using "lies and phony outrage"
and calling it a “made-up controversy by the McCain campaign.”
As Chip Reid reports, the war
over words is still raging.
But what do this and other campaign scuffles over the past week really come
down to? Our Bill Plante has a
Reality Check. Also, Dean Reynolds asks: could these moments on the trail
turn the entire tone of the campaigns a lot more negative?
Next: As Americans learn more about Sarah Palin, we are also learning more
about her life with her four-month-old son, Trig - who is one of nearly
400,000 Americans living with Down Syndrome. Tonight, I'll take a closer look at the
life-changing decision so many parents have to make when they learn their
child has Down Syndrome.
And finally, on the eve of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we'll show
what's being done to keep precious memories alive … in the largest
collection of World Trade Center attack
artifacts.
See you tonight,

PENTAGON MEMORIAL OPENS: SEPT 11 HONOR
- A new permanent memorial park has been built to honor victims of the
Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon. The memorial, scheduled to be dedicated on
this year's anniversary of the attacks, is located on the grounds of the
Pentagon in Arlington, VA.
Thursday, on the anniversary of September 11, we will have a correspondent
live in Arlington to unveil this new memorial.
SAVE MONEY AND SHOP IN YOUR OWN CLOSET
- It's fashion week here in New York City and if you're feeling a little
blue because you can't afford fancy new clothes...there may be a
solution... and you don' t have to go far to find it. All you have to do is
look closely in your very own closet. Consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen will be in our studio to
tell us how to look great this season, without spending a dime, and without
leaving your home to look for new clothes.
EASY AND PROFITABLE WAYS TO SELL YOUR OWN
HOME - Despite news of the Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout
this week, the housing market remains weak... and sellers are hungry for
any profit they can squeeze out of a sale. Recent studies suggest that you
may be able to get more for your home if you sell it yourself, instead of
listing with a real estate agent. Early Show financial advisor Ray Martin will join us with easy tips
you need to know before putting your house on the market, so you make the
most out of your sell.
DELICIOUS RECIPES WITH MINT! -
Before summer comes to an end, become a chef in your own kitchen and cook
with this season’s most delicious herb - mint! Mint has been used as
a flavoring agent for thousands of years and has a very distinctive flavor
that is only evident in the mint plant. Mint is used widely in Asian
cuisine as well as Middle Eastern foods. Thursday, Dede Wilson from Bon
Appétit Magazine will show us how to cook with this delicious herb.
