WE'RE WONDERING
On the PGA Tour you have the year-ending FedExCup Championship
playoffs. On the LPGA Tour, there's the ADT Championship finale.
Here's something guaranteed to make your hair hurt: try to understand,
then explain in simple terms, how players on either tour get into
contention, take part in the proceedings, and end up a mega-bucks
winner at the end of these convoluted processes. (LET ME EXPLAIN. GOT
A CALCULATOR?) Any takers? Any thoughts?

LET ME EXPLAIN. GOT A CALCULATOR?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Maybe it's just us and our limited ability to process statistical
information and our aversion to math analysis and counting of any
kind. (Math was our worst subject in school). So a few years ago
when NASCAR decided it needed a points-based, year-end, fan-boosting
"chase," we read the rules thereof, yawned, then promptly forgot
them. Then, not to be outdone, the PGA Tour looked at the NASCAR
chase and said, "We can do that, only we can make our chase even more
complicated, more yawn-producing. We'll make sure that only the most
fervent, diehard fans will bother to process and retain the
statistics-based rules-of-the-road leading toward a $10 million
payout for some player whom (perhaps) nobody ever heard of or who
doesn't have to show up half the time. And so a couple of years into
the program, the Tour still tries to get it right, attempting to
inject some excitement into the proceedings, fix it so that, as
happened last year, someone can get the pot of gold without even
visiting the rainbow. And actually they inched a little bit closer to
the goal. This time the projected winner, Vijay Singh, will actually
have to show up at the Tour Championship in order to qualify for the
prize. This after finishing 44th in last week's BMW. Go figure. Got
a calculator?

NEVER UP . . .
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
There are only four ways to miss a putt: left, right, long, or short.
A good way to increase your odds by 25 percent on an uphill putt is
plan to have the ball finish one foot past the hole if the putt is
offline. Remember, most golfers leave missed uphill putts short of
the hole.

U.S. RYDER CUP TEAM IS COMPLETE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
One observer has said it looks as if in the naming of his Ryder Cup
captain's picks he "stood blindfolded in a room and threw darts at a
board and came up with Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes and
Chad Campbell." If you are one of these four players, you may or my
not disagree, but if you were Paul Azinger and you had hoped to be
able to make these key selections based on clearly strong
performances by players at season's end, the golf gods did not
cooperate, and you had to go more with your gut than with objective
indicators. At any rate, the rest of the 12-man team will include:
Stewart Cink; Ben Curtis; Jim Furyk; Anthony Kim; Justin Leonard;
Phil Mickelson; Kenny Perry; and Boo Weekley.

DOG ATE GOLF BALLS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
No, we are not trying to emulate supermarket tabloids. The honest
truth is that in Scotland last week a dog named Oscar received an
operation to remove 13 golf balls from its stomach. The
five-year-old black lab's owner, Chris Morrison, who regularly takes
the dog for walks around the Pitreavie golf course in Dunfermline,
says the canine has a talent for finding golf balls. Unknown to
Morrison, however, was that over time Oscar had been ingesting balls
to the point where they began to rattle around in its stomach. The
operating vet said that one of the balls had been swallowed so long
ago that it had begun to decompose. Oscar is recuperating on a diet
of watered down food, and will henceforth wear a muzzle during walks
on the golf course.

BIVENS BACKS DOWN
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
"After hearing the concerns, we believe there are other ways to
achieve our shared objective of supporting and enhancing the business
opportunities for every tour player." With those words, commissioner
Carolyn Bivens rescinded the barely week-old LPGA decision to require
minimal proficiency in English by players who otherwise would lose
playing privileges. The original dictum caused such an uproar of
protest that it quickly became apparent to LPGA brass that the
benefits they thought would accrue from players (mostly Asian) who
can communicate effectively with tour supporters would be eclipsed by
negative financial consequences and perhaps attendant lawsuits. They
quickly "saw the light."

GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The LPGA's English-only call . . . (since rescinded)

"English is the monetary language of the world. If they want to play
for pay, learn it. If not stay an amateur. The LPGA is just trying to
help them make more money from those who sponsor professional golf.
So you can say they are being paid to learn a language. How is that
a bad thing?" Joe Aubrey (Ventura, Calif.)

"Being a proud American, I am all in favor of the LPGA making the
decision to have the players speak somewhat proficient English. I
wish we didn't have to press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish. If you
come to America, speak the language. If I move to Mexico, etc., I
should be required to be proficient in their language. Kudos to the
LPGA for stepping up." KK

". . . a good reason to have this rule was (addressed) in this same
newsletter (#441) by the Canadian Club's requiring English: 'It got
to a point where we had signed up a lot of Korean members and it wasn'
t long until they were breaking many of the rules and weren't
participating because they couldn't read anything or speak or
communicate with us.' This could hold true of any nationality. I
think it's a good thing." MCB (Pennsylvania)

". . . this seems totally ridiculous and discriminatory. K.J. Choi
said if the PGA had this rule five years ago, he would have had to
stay at home. Today, Cabrera and Romero on the PGA Tour would be
packing their bags also. We fans like to see good competitive
golfers no matter where they are from or what language they speak. . .
. let them bring an interpreter with them, we don't care what
language they speak. We just like good competitive golf. . . ." P.T.
Irish (Glendale, Ariz.)

". . . great, but enforcing it will be interesting. I have worked in
transportation in several tournaments, both LPGA and PGA tours. Most
players can get by on their English, but I realize with a microphone
shoved in your face it can become a nightmare for players and
sponsors." WP

"Are they out of their heads? Some of the hottest up and comers are
not native English-speaking.
On second thought, maybe they're not crazy. Sure would cut down the
competition." SG

"Sounds like the club in Canada (#441) makes a good case for English.
I would not want to try to work with someone who had to have an
interpreter in that environment. Golf is a very fan-supporter
interactive game, and much of the money comes from here. It's really
not much to ask, and there is certainly plenty of support available.
But, as we all know, asking anything of anyone in this world usually
gets a bad rap deserved or not. Is there a Korean tour? If one does
not wish to learn English, maybe one could just play in their home
country?" MK

". . . an excellent idea. I think they should be able to communicate
easily with other players, officials, sponsors and the spectators.
Considering the amount of time they spend in this country it only
makes sense to learn the language. . . ." Carol
