Japanese Government's Green Purchasing Program Resulting in CO2
Reductions

Japan's Ministry of the Environment announced on May 1, 2008, that the
national government's green purchasing policy resulted in a reduction of
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by an estimated 89,500 tons in fiscal
2006. The reduction, equivalent to the household CO2 emissions of 42,000
persons, is based on a review of the government's environmental load
reduction as a result of its green procurement practices.

Eco-Friendly Condo able to Cut CO2 by 30 percent Debuts in Kitakyushu

Nippon Steel City Produce, Inc., has completed an eco-friendly
condominium called "Livio Higashida Ville Court I Residential District"
in the Urban Residence Zone of the Yahata Higashida General Development,
Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on March 17, 2008. The condominium is
the first subsidized project in Japan that the Ministry of the
Environment selected as "The Community-Wide 20% CO2 Emissions Reduction
Model" on November 9, 2006.

Kanagawa Prefecture to Promote Subsidies and Tax Credits for EVs

Kanagawa Prefecture announced on April 15, 2008, that it will launch a
program to provide subsidies and tax credits for next-generation
electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries, starting from
fiscal 2009.

Daikin Launches Fluorochemical Material to Prevent Fuel Evaporation

In May 2008, Daikin Industries Ltd., a leading Japanese manufacturer of
air conditioning systems, launched a newly developed fluorochemical
material that reduces the permeation of air-polluting hydrocarbons (HC)
contained in automobile fuel.

Tokyo Enacts Japan's First Ordinance for Mandatory CO2 Cuts

On June 25, 2008, a plenary session of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly
passed an amendment to Tokyo's Environment Protection Ordinance, making
it the first local ordinance in Japan to require large-scale businesses
to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and introduce an emissions
trading system.

Nagoya Issues Energy Conservation Guidebook for Supermarkets

Nagoya City in central Japan issued an energy conservation guidebook in
March 2008 aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which lag
behind in promoting energy conservation relative to larger companies.
Based on opinions expressed in the "CO2 Reduction Scrum Meetings with
Companies" forum started in 2007, the city conducted a survey on energy-
saving measures being undertaken by 29 SMEs including supermarkets and
convenience stores in the city, and used the results to create the
guidebook.

Ministry Establishes Carbon Offset Forum

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment established the "Japan Carbon
Offset Forum" (J-COF) on April 1, 2008, in accordance with the "
Guidelines for Carbon Offsetting in Japan" drawn up in February 2008.
The Ministry held meetings to kick off the initiative in Tokyo on April
15 and in Kyoto on April 16, 2008.

Coca-Cola's HFC-Free Cashless Vending Machines Used at Toyako Summit

The Coca-Cola System in Japan, consisting of Coca-Cola Japan Co. and 12
bottling companies, announced on April 17, 2008 its introduction this
spring of a new vending machine, the e-40. The e-40 is equipped to
accept electronic money and does not use any hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
The company also announced its aim to replace all of its approximately
980,000 vending machines in Japan with HFC-free models by 2020.
