Lyndon White, Managing Editor, writes:
When trawling through the Electronicstalk inbox over the last week I
have noticed a number of press releases broadcasting the 'smallest
ever [insert product of choice]'.
I wonder what the response would be in the following week if a release
were to go out with the title 'world's largest capacitor blots out the
sun' or 'new 20 million gigabit camera fills Lord's cricket ground'.
This would, of course, be an exercise in absurdism, but it does
highlight the fact that the modern world in general is uncomfortable
with an emphasis on the gigantic, preferring the small and the sleek.
The electronics industry has been well placed to handle this demand,
which, after all, does have a strong foundation in practicality. After
all, would a musician really want to lug around one of the early Moog
synthesisers on a London bus? Probably not. Is Pro-Talk about to
relocate its data onto a circa 1943 Colossus computer? Well, it would
have some publicity value.
But then one wonders how long today's sleek devices will linger in the
memory. I remember my Nan's 1960s cabinet stereo with affection,
precisely because of its ugliness and general awkwardness. I did own a
few Sony Walkmans in the 1980s but I don't remember much about them as
devices, partly because of their disposability.
This makes me sound like something on an old fogey. I'm not. I don't
like mobile phones much I'll own but I thought the iPod was a
fantastic idea. The ability to carry around your record collection and
mix up Public Image Ltd with Beethoven has been wonderful (until I sat
on the bloody thing and broke the screen - that wouldn't have happened
with my Nan's stereo cabinet, which could happily double as a chair
for Giant Haystacks). But I do wonder what actually happens when
things get progressively smaller: do we all end in an ultra-functional
world dictated by lack of device space?
An end to ugliness and awkwardness may open up a road to disposability
and a host of devices that don't linger long in the memory.
