What the A.V. Club has to say about Spiritualized's "Songs in A&E":

"Songs In A&E is Pierce's best work since Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space---and easily his most personal... But even for an album whose final words are "funeral home" (on the heartbreaking eulogy "Goodnight, Goodnight"), there's still plenty of uplift, from the Can-esque freak-blues of "I Gotta Fire" and "Yeah Yeah" to the gospel sing-along of "Soul On Fire," which boasts one of the most stirring choruses Pierce has ever written. Death has never sounded so alive."

Text this event

My Morning Jacket has garnered a lot of attention for being something
that's all too rare: a good, old-fashioned Southern rock band with
arty ambitions. That means the guys in the band have both hair and
brains that are known to swing around, and the mystique certainly adds
to a string of albums that are strong and digressive. The latest is
Evil Urges, a new album that dials down the fabled My Morning
Jacket reverb and plays around with singer Jim James' singular voice.

The Republicans are looking for a new Presidential candidate in 1946, and they pin all their hopes on Grant Matthews, a charismatic, successful businessman with no prior involvement in politics. When Matthews' estranged wife encourages him to stand firm with his honest, outspoken style, he soon discovers that he must choose between political ambition and moral principles. This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama offers a shrewd and witty look at affairs of state as well as affairs of the heart.

  This week in A.V. Milwaukee

bayview
bash

Text this event

The east side has the college kids, Riverwest has the punks, and the Third Ward has snappiest looking motherfuckers in town, but the most purely enjoyable place to live in Milwaukee has to be Bay View. (The A.V. Club realizes there are about 20 other neighborhoods we haven't mentioned. You guys rock, too.) Bay View has it all: trendy bars, old-time supper clubs, dirty rock 'n' roll venues, the world's friendliest senior citizens, locally owned art galleries, proud Obama supporters, crazy Confederate flag-waving rednecks, and, of course, the best view of the city off of Lake Michigan. It's not heaven, it's the south side.

Still not convinced of Bay View's awesomeness? This weekend offers some great opportunities to sample the candy-coated trees and Martini-flavored water of this magical 'hood. On Saturday is the fifth annual Bay View Bash, which almost don't happen this year before the Bay View Historical Association stepped in and saved the day. Now the bash is back on with more than 20 bands on three stages and more than 100 vendors. Also on Saturday is the Global Union world music festival, which takes place in beautiful Humboldt Park and runs through Sunday. Global Union welcomes eight acts this year, from places like Iran, Russia, and Cuba. Aren't we supposed to be fighting with these people? The A.V. Club explores whether art will conquer politics in this week?s issue.

You'll have to venture out of Bay View to see it, but Alverno Presents is teaming up with WMSE for a pre-Global Union concert Friday at Todd Wehr Conference Center featuring Prague's baddest avant garde rock 'n' roll band Plastic People Of The Universe and Little Cow! of Hungary. For those who don't keep up with the underground Czech scene, PPU was fighting commies in central Europe back when American bands were rolling around in the mud at Woodstock. To say seeing the band live is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity would be understatement.

Thursday, September 11, 10 p.m.   Neil Hamburger + Pleaseeasaur, Aaron Vold

neil
hamburger

Text this event

The fictional Neil Hamburger is an awful comedian: He coughs loudly between jokes, mangles punchlines, and gets uncomfortably personal with the audience. Hamburger's calculated worst translates to some of the best, most inventive stand-up around, but it hews a little too closely to Weird Al territory on the new Sings Country Winners, which finds him fronting a honky-tonk group (including moonlighting members of The Tubes and The Rentals) and putting tears in beers with pedal-steel snifflers such as "Please Ask That Clown To Stop Crying." His set here will stick mostly to jokes (thankfully?) though a song or two might get thrown in. Most of the night's musical wackiness will come from Seattle's Pleaseeasaur: Lounge lizard J.P. Hasson--aided by multimedia projectionist/costume designer Thomas Hurley III--sings cheesy songs over Casio beats while wearing a polar bear costume, among other things. Opening the show is Aaron Vold, a member of Decibully who's been moonlighting lately as a stand-up comic.
