by SlotGazer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slotgazer/)

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. The supported protocols
are HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink. It has a powerful segmented
downloading ability, downloading a file from multiple sources and multiple
protocols and utilizing your download bandwidth to the maximum. It supports
downloading a file from HTTP(S)/FTP and BitTorrent at the same time, while
the data downloaded from HTTP(S)/FTP is uploaded to the BitTorrent swarm.
Using Metalink's chunk checksums, aria2 automatically validates chunks of
data while downloading a file like BitTorrent.
Changes: This release fixes the bug in chunk checksum validation and an
infinite loop in FTP downloads and a segmentation fault when downloading
gzipped files from Metalink. The Turkish translation was added and the
German and Russian translations were updated.

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1, RSA,
and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and several
common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high level
interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and includes a
substantial tutorial and API reference.
Changes: BigInt now caches the significant word count, and the right shift
operator was optimized slightly. The public key benchmarks were rewritten
to more accurately reflect real world usage and to have a new set of timer
options available. A set of larger DSA and MODP groups were added.

Database
About: Ora2Pg is a Perl module to export an Oracle database schema to a
PostgreSQL compatible schema. It connects your Oracle database, extracts
its structure, and generates an SQL script that you can load into your

Oracle System users from export. It also adds support for binary mode
output other than ":raw", which is useful if you have UTF-8 records. Double
escaping of special characters was fixed.

Sat, Sep 6th 2008 23:51
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: xmonad is a tiling window manager for X. Windows are arranged
automatically to tile the screen without gaps or overlap, maximising screen
use. Window manager features are accessible from the keyboard; a mouse is
optional. xmonad is extensible in Haskell, allowing for powerful
customisation. Custom layout algorithms, key bindings, and other extensions
may be written by the user in config files. Layouts are applied
dynamically, and different layouts may be used on each workspace. Xinerama
is fully supported, allowing windows to be tiled on several physical
screens.
Changes: A general purpose replacement for "gaps" has been adopted.
Floating windows pop up on the current screen by default. Locale support

[027] - Zero Install Injector 0.36
by Thomas Leonard (http://freshmeat.net/users/tal197/)
Sat, Sep 6th 2008 22:16
Internet
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution
About: The Zero Install Injector makes it possible for users to install
software easily and without the need for root privileges. It takes the URL
of a program's interface description and chooses suitable versions of the
program and all of its dependencies (also identified by URLs) according to
the user's policy settings (eg. "stable", "testing", "minimal network use",
etc). The chosen versions are downloaded and cached and the program is run,
using environment variables to let it find the components.
Changes: Downloading should now be less CPU-intensive. A distribution is
no longer assumed to be RPM-based just because /var/lib/rpm exists. When
considering Debian distribution packages, the architecture is now
considered: for example, a 64-bit Debian library cannot be used with a
32-bit main executable. Some progress has been made towards supporting
Windows.
