The Light Factory presents the Devil Music
Ensemble, one of the leading bands in silent film
accompaniment, who will perform their new original
score to the silent martial arts film classic "Red
Heroine," Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Visulite Theatre.
Admission is $10 per person. More information is
available at www.lightfactory.org
.
The Devil Music Ensemble consists of three
multi-
instrumental musicians from Boston that have made
their name with live original score performances to
classic silent films. Over six U.S. and two European
tours, the Devil Music Ensemble have established
themselves as one of the primary American groups in
this field and are capable of tightly synced genre
bending hypnotic musical performances. The Devil
Music Ensemble is comprised of Brendon Wood on
electric guitar, lap steel, and synthesizer; Jonah
Rapino on electric violin, lap steel, vibraphone, erhu (2
stringed Chinese violin) and synthesizer; and Tim
Nylander on drums, and a variety of Chinese
percussion instruments.

"Red Heroine" (1929, directed by Wen Yimin) is the
only surviving Chinese silent "Kung Fu" film left from
the silent era. "Red Heroine" is a prime example of
the popular Chinese swordplay genre (wuxia pian),
often based on published novels or serials. Once
popular cinema exports, these films were banned
after the Cultural Revolution.
"Red Heroine" is a lively tale of the rise of a woman
warrior, victimized in youth by a rampaging army who
kidnaps her, causing her grandmother's death. After
being rescued, she trains and emerges as a full-
fledged warrior, ready to deploy magic powers to
avenge her family's plight. "Red Heroine" is a robust
telling of a young woman's transformation from abject
victim to resolute warrior.
Devil Music Ensemble has created the only modern
score for this film, pulling from the traditions of
Chinese classical and folk music, and soundtracks
from classic Kung Fu cinema. Their performance
showcases a unique combination of the ancient
tradition of martial arts, early 20th century Asian film,
and 21st century music. The 2008 "Red Heroine" tour
is sponsored by the Boston Asian Community
Development Corporation. The Light Factory film
programming is supported by the North Carolina Film
Commission, in addition to basic operating support
from the Arts & Science Council and the North
Carolina Arts Council.
