Laps For Life Oct. 11

Only two weeks remain until the Sept.11th Laps for Life Blood & Marrow drive at Talladega Superspeedway and the American Red Cross is enticing volunteer blood donors to participate with door prizes, goody bags and more. The blood drive is being sponsored by the American Red Cross, while the marrow drive is being sponsored by the Hendrick Marrow Program. To pre-register, prospective donors can visit www.givelife.org and enter the keyword TALLADEGA in the search field. Everyone who pre-registers online will receive a Talladega Superspeedway souvenir hat when they show up at the drive to donate.

Door prizes for the event include: a racing experience from Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure, posters autographed by two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, a Tony Stewart autographed hat, Greg Biffle autographed merchandise, a framed Gary Hill print, collectible Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kevin Harvick action figures, various die-casts and much more. Each presenting volunteer donor is automatically entered in the drawing for door prizes and is guaranteed a goody bag brimming with items donated by the track and the Red Cross.

"Last year at Laps For Life the American Red Cross collected 233 units of blood," said Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey. "We are asking for everyone to roll up their sleeves, give the gift of life and help us push that number even higher this year. We have some great goody bags and door prizes lined up and as always, it will be a fun-filled experience at the track."

The blood & marrow drive begins at the Speed Channel Dome in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, where each participant and one guest will receive a special credential for the day that allows access to five different Pit Stops. Once all five Pit Stops are completed, the participants will have made a "Lap For Life" around Talladega Superspeedway.

The credential will be issued at Pit Stop 1, "Draw For Qualifying" where participants will register to present to have blood drawn for donation, thus qualifying them for the rest of the adventure. There, they also will receive a ticket qualifying them for the door prizes.

After presenting to give blood and/or registering for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry, participants will move on to Pit Stop 2, "Souvenir Row," where they’ll receive a goody bag brimming with prizes.

From there, they’ll move to Pit Stop 3, "Driver’s Meeting," to learn more about the history of motorsports by taking a free tour of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum.

After the tour, participants will venture outside to board a tour bus and be transported on a track tour of the famous Talladega Superspeedway. The tour will lead them to Pit Stop 4, "Type Testing." Here, guests will be given a ride around the speedway in an official track vehicle, eventually ending in Gatorade Victory *** for a photo opportunity.

Finally, participants will return to the Hall of Fame for Pit Stop 5, "The Donor Diner," where they will enjoy treats provided by Talladega Superspeedway sponsors.

Talladega Superspeedway Laps For Life: A Blood & Marrow Drive For Alabama, began in 2006 as part of a nationwide effort among multiple tracks. The NASCAR Foundation, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Hendrick Marrow Program and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation announced in June 2006 at Michigan International Speedway that it would build upon MIS’s annual Spirit of America 500 Blood Drive by providing unique experiences at many different tracks that bring out the goodwill and community pride in all race fans. In addition to giving blood, fans are also encouraged to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s Registry of volunteer marrow donors. Every day, thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases that could be treated with a marrow transplant are searching the Registry for a donor.

For more information on tickets to Talladega Superspeedway, please visit www.talladegasuperspeedway.com or call 1-877-Go2-DEGA. For our hearing impaired guests, please call TDD 1-866-ISC-TRAK (1-866-472-8725). Tickets also are available in person by visiting the Talladega Superspeedway Ticket Office from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. CDT, Monday- Friday.

Mixed Reactions to Bud Shootout Changes: How do drivers feel about the decision to change the rules governing next year's season-opening Budweiser Shootout exhibition race at Daytona International Speedway? Well, it depends whether you're in or out. Michael Waltrip, who finished 11th in the 2008 Shootout, would have needed to win a pole in the last 12 races to make the field in 2009 under the current rules. Instead, with the decision to include six teams from each of the four manufacturers, there's an excellent chance for two of Waltrip's team cars to make the field next February. Carl Edwards, who missed the 2007 edition because he failed to win a pole the previous year, thought he secured a spot with his run last week at Bristol. It turns out that he's one of five Roush Fenway Racing drivers who will represent Ford in the 2009 Shootout. Edwards is in favor of the new rule. On the other hand, 2008 pole-winners Paul Menard and Joe Nemechek find themselves on the outside looking in. For Nemechek's Furniture Row Racing team, the change was a huge blow. Nemechek said someone like Boris Said, who only runs a limited schedule, no longer gets additional benefit from winning a pole.(NASCAR.com)
AND: Ryan Newman says it does seem odd that Daytona International Speedway executives don't want the defending Daytona 500 winner in their season-opening Bud Shootout next spring. Since Newman and new teammate Tony Stewart will be leaving their current teams at the end of this year and driving next year for a new team, they both will be ineligible for the Shootout. Ironic, since the Daytona 500 this year was Stewart-versus-Newman. Adding more irony: Joey Logano, who has yet even to run a Cup race, will be in the Shootout, in Stewart's Toyota. And even more irony: David Stremme, who will likely be taking Newman's ride with Roger Penske, would be in the Shootout instead of Newman. Stremme, whose only Cup run this year was at Talladega in April, where he finished 28th, has never won a Cup event. Newman has 13 career wins. "The new Shootout doesn't seem to be about drivers, but about manufacturers," Newman says. "It's a changed race all the way around. (
Winston Salem Journal)
AND: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he has no problem with the changes in the qualifying rules, but he has a big problem with a long final segment. "Fifty laps is forever on that track," Earnhardt said. "It would be a lot more exciting for the fans and a lot more fun for us if we only did 10 laps at the end." #11-Denny Hamlin, who won the race as a rookie in 2006, said he agrees with Earnhardt. "Only racing 10 laps at the end would be way better," Hamlin said. "The tires go away pretty fast at Daytona, but they still would have a lot of grip for just 10 or 15 laps. We could really go all out and the racing would be a lot closer."(
ESPN.com)(8-30-2008) Comment here
Allmendinger uncertain of driving plans for next season: Red Bull Racing's #84-AJ Allmendinger is still uncertain about whether he will return to his Sprint Cup team next season. The driver has previously stated he'd like to stay with the group, but he says he continues to wait to hear from the team. "Phone is silent as can be from their end," he said. " … I've stated I'd like to be back next year, but I just want an answer. I need to know I'm racing somewhere next year." Almendinger and his team are outside the top 35 in the owner standings, though they have been on the line of making that field and were in it for one week. Allmendinger says that the team has improved to the level where he expects top finishes week to week.(

Keselowski visited Penske but says he was never extended an offer: Brad Keselowski said he visited Penske Racing last week but did not have an offer on the table to drive the Sprint Cup #12 car next season. "I just went down and said, 'Hi,' and checked everything out, looked at their beautiful building," Keselowski said Friday at Auto Club Speedway. "I only live like a mile from the place. I heard it's a cool shop, and I had to check it out." Keselowski said the Penske officials asked him what his contract situation was, and Keselowski said he was committed to JR Motorsports. Penske Racing is looking for a replacement for Ryan Newman. Penske test driver David Stremme is considered one of the candidates for that ride. "I basically told them flat out that I have a contract to drive for JR Motorsports, and I'm committed to it," Keselowski said. "The biggest thing is I've got a good ride. We won last week, so it has to be pretty good. We're winning races and we're happy, so why [mess] with that?(
SceneDaily.com)(8-30-2008) Comment here

Hornish unsure of points, team swap: Sam Hornish Jr. says he hasn't had any conversations with Penske Racing officials regarding a possible move from the team's #77 Dodge to the #12 for 2009, or a possible points swap between the two. "All I know about it is that no decision has been made," Hornish said Friday while at Auto Club Speedway. "I just know they need a driver for the 12 car." Teammate Ryan Newman's impending departure means the Penske organization has one driver opening to fill. Putting Hornish in the 12 would likely placate primary sponsor Alltel and would guarantee the driver a spot in the field through a minimum of next season's first five races (when final owner points from 2008 are used).(

Carpentier says he's a free agent: Canadian #10-Patrick Carpentier says "It’s over," at the end of the year, after his one season with Dodge car owners Ray Evernham and George Gillett. "They hired Reed Sorenson for next year, so it’s over," Carpentier says. "They’re working on a fourth team and looking for sponsorship, but you know how that goes." So Carpentier says he’s a free agent. "I’m talking with other teams to see what’s out there," the Montreal native says.(
Winston Salem Journal), see earlier information about Carpentier on my #10 team page.(8-29-2008)

Fitz Motorsports cars for sale by Iredell County Sheriff: UPDATE 2Statement from Joel Kauffmann: I'm also very disappointed with how this situation has to be handled. The sole intent of this post was to advertise and gain an audience for the auction being held on September 4th, 2008. There was never any understanding of things being cleared up the following day by either my attorney or myself. It is also upsetting that Fitz's statement makes it sound as if we just asked for the money last week and we are being unreasonable on how we are handling the situation. My legal staff and I have been trying to work with Fitz for the past few years (patiently) so there comes a point when you have to move on. As of 5:00 PM Friday, August 29th, there has been no progress made and the Auction is still being help on September 4th. Details can be seen through the link above.(JKI PR

Vidovich on standby for Ragan if needed: Roush Fenway Racing has Auggie Vidovich on standby in case David Ragan needs to focus on his Sprint Cup car this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. Ragan is 13th in the Cup standings, 12 points behind 12th-place Clint Bowyer for one of the 12 spots in the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup with two races remaining before the field is set. Ragan said he is planning on running both Cup and Nationwide practices today. "I've been doing it all year," Ragan said. "Letting [Vidovich] run one practice and me sitting back, it would probably drive me crazy, and I would end up screwing up even bigger. We'll keep [doing] it like it's always done, but in case something were to happen, we want to have a good plan B
