[001] - Amahi Linux Home Server 8.24
by cpg (http://freshmeat.net/users/cpg/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 14:31
Information Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Ruby Modules
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions
About: The Amahi Home Server is a Linux Home Server based on Fedora (and
later on Ubuntu). Your machine becomes a "Home Digital Assistant" or HDA
after the installation. Each HDA is a Fedora-based server targeted for home
and home office environments. It provides an iTunes server, calendaring, a
wiki, shared network storage, network backups, a printer server, VPN, and a
plug-in architecture built on Ruby on Rails.
Changes: This release adds a fix for the VPN module for a problem which
caused newer upstream releases of OpenVPN and Amahi's default configuration
to prevent some users from authenticating, denying VPN access to their
Amahi Linux Home Server. The new VPN module contains a more
"production-ready" setup, using the PAM authentication plugin for OpenVPN.

[003] - Big Medium 2.0.5 (Stable)
by Josh Clark (http://freshmeat.net/users/joshclark/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 17:46
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Big Medium is a content management system aimed squarely at Web
designers who want a CMS that enables extremely flexible designs but
remains easy to set up without programming skills. The software does not
impose cookie-cutter layouts: If you bring basic to intermediate HTML/CSS
know-how, Big Medium can manage just about any design you throw at it. Once
the designer configures the templates, he or she can hand the site over to
content editors; no technical know-how is required to add or edit pages.
Big Medium's friendly, humane interface is easy and non-threatening for CMS
newbies.
Changes: This version allows advanced users to schedule automated backups
of Big Medium data and site files. It also adds comment counts, provides
more control over the display of tips and announcements, and has a variety
of other changes and bugfixes.

[007] - deco file extraction framework 1.5.3
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 17:48
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a command-line program that, together with the deco-archive
package, allows you to extract dozens of popular archive file formats. It
has a consistent interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.rar 3.zip 4.flac 5.deb") and
consistent behavior (never deleting archives after extraction and
extracting relative to the current working directory, just verbosely
enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It creates an
extraction directory if there is more than one file or directory at the
archive top level, and it is able to fix strange permissions.
Changes: A bug was fixed that could cause deco to crash instead of exiting
gracefully when out of memory at a certain point. The code has been
optimized and cleaned up.

Database
Information Management
About: GCstar is an application that can be used to manage collections of
different types. Users can enter all the items they own, along with
associated information and later perform searches using filtering criteria.
A plugin system allows some information to be downloaded automatically from
Internet sites. Collections can be exported to many formats, including
HTML, XML, CSV, or Tellico file format, or imported from Ant Movie Catalog
or Tellico, among others. It currently manages collections of movies, video
games, books, music, numismatic, wines, board games, and lets users define
their own types of collections.
Changes: More plugins now use big pictures if the option is checked.
GCstar now imports identifier and media labels from movies collections
created with Ant Movie Catalog. There are new plugins to fetch information
from Web sites: nooSFere (Books -- FR) and TheLegacy (Video games -- DE).
The following problems have been fixed: a rating was sometimes lost when
displayed with stars, problems occurred with the commandline, the title
when opening items in windows was not updated, and the title in the list
was incorrect for some collections when modifying many items together.

About: gumnut is a program to aid a group of people to perform cooperative
decentralized decision making. The text or GUI client can create, moderate,
and display proposals over a decentralized communication network (currently
gnutella). Proposals are text files with a simple naming convention that

geographical location). Popular proposals are found by searching on one or
more of these fields and then calculating the support for each proposal
based on the number of occurrences on the network.
Changes: This release displays the contents of a clicked on leaf based on
filename rather than index number. The default sort order for text
interface results has changed.

[038] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 6.3
by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 17:47
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, D, Java, or Ruby code. It allows the programmer to embed
actions at any point in a regular language, and to control non-determinism
in the resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene
star, subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other
common operators. It also supports the construction of scanners and the
building of state machines using state charts. It can be used to create
very fast recognizers and parsers that are also robust.
Changes: Duplicate include prevention was fixed and improved. A false
assertion spurred during the creation of scanners with conditions was
fixed. A crash on the failed lookup of a goto/call target was fixed.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Utilities
About: runawk is a small wrapper for the AWK interpreter that helps one
write standalone AWK scripts. Its main feature is to provide a
module/library system for AWK which is somewhat similar to Perl's "use"
command. It also allows you to select a preferred AWK interpreter, to setup
the environment for your scripts. It also provides other helpful features.
runawk makes programming AWK easy and efficient, despite the fact that AWK
is a very simple programming language. runawk also provides many useful AWK
functions and extensions implemented in the separate files/modules.
Changes: The temporary file is removed if runawk is killed by SIGINT,
SIGQUIT, SIGTERM, SIGHUP, or SIGPIPE signals. (The temporary file is
created by 'runawk -e ...')

[040] - sawfish 1.3.4
by Janek Kozicki (http://freshmeat.net/users/cosurgi/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 17:46
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers :: Sawfish
About: Sawfish (the window manager formerly known as Sawmill) is an
extensible window manager using a Lisp-based extension language. All window
decorations are configurable and all user-interface policy is controlled
through the language. Its aim is to manage windows in the most flexible and
attractive manner possible. As such it does not implement desktop
backgrounds, application docks, or other things that may be achieved
through separate applications. Sawfish is mostly GNOME-compliant; almost
all configuration may be made through a graphical interface.
Changes: This version includes numerous bugfixes and improvements. A new
Enter-Click focus mode was added, window property handling was improved,
and a few new themes were added. It's possible to maximize a window over
all Xinerama monitors, and a raise-lower-window bug when using transparent
windows with the xcomposite extension was fixed. Moving a window across
viewports with a key binding no longer causes it to lose focus. A major C
part cleanup was done, and a spec file was updated. A deprecated themer was
removed.

[041] - Spectro-Edit 0.3
by Jonathan Fuerth (http://freshmeat.net/users/jfuerth/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 16:50
About: Spectro-Edit reads in regular PCM audio files, then shows the audio
visually in a time vs. frequency plot. The fun part is that you can "paint
out" any part of the visualization and play back the audio subject to your
modifications. When you are happy with the result, you can save your work
back to a WAV file. This could be useful for podcasting (edit out
microphone noise, chair squeaks, phones ringing, and other background
noise), music (make strange and unusual modifications to the sound for
artistic reasons), research (visualize animal calls or noise pollution from
nearby industrial activity), and general purpose geekery (which was the
original purpose).
Changes: This release adds many improvements, including undo/redo and a
continuous readout reporting cursor position (frequency (y axis) and time
(x axis)). The brightness slider is now faster and the user interface more
thoughtfully laid out. The "scale region" tool now uses a slider with
realtime preview instead of two buttons, and the new tool chooser features
several new tools, including "flip" (x or y) and "clip to threshold". The
window is now never wider than the screen when opening a lengthy clip.

[049] - xjobs 20080824
by Thomas Maier-Komor (http://freshmeat.net/users/komor/)
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 17:48
System
Utilities
About: xjobs runs several jobs in parallel and limits the number of jobs
running at once so that every processor of the machine is busy, but not
overloaded. A batch of long-running processes invoked from the shell are
normally executed one after another, no matter how many processors are
available. xjobs allows batching those jobs while still keeping the machine
busy. The interface of xjobs is similar to that of xargs.
Changes: This release adds enhanced support for named pipes, an -e option
to terminate on job error, and resource usage display. It reports time in a
more readable format.
