Turn Fuel Dollars Into Destination Dollars
Gas prices may be dropping, but it's still pretty pricey and it's
making travelers anxious to save any way they can. Here are ten tips from
the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development (always eager to get more
drivers pointed in their direction) to make it more affordable to visit
their drive-worthy state. Or any place you'd like to go for a vacation or a
weekend jaunt.
Before you leave home Tip 1: Replace your car's air filters. Not only will replacing a dirty filter improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, it will protect your engine. Tip 2: Check your tires. Some studies show that properly inflated tires are safer, last longer, and can improve mileage. Tip 3: Pack light. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces a typical car's fuel economy by 1-2 percent, more in smaller vehicles. Tip 4: A roof rack provides more cargo space, but can decrease fuel economy by 5 percent. Travel light and place items inside the trunk whenever possible. On the road Tip 5: Go smaller. If renting a car, rent the smallest you can comfortably use; ask about hybrid rentals. Tip #6: Be prepared. Have everything you need before you get in the car. Don't idle the car while you buckle up and get organized. If stopping for more than one minute, turn the car off. Tip 7: Don't power up or charge peripherals (cell phone, iPod, etc.) from the car battery. It greatly reduces fuel efficiency. Tip 8: Slow down, calm down, save gas. Slower speeds (55-70 mph) and less aggressive driving really boost gas mileage (between 12 and 31 percent!). Leave the high speeds, hard braking and aggressive acceleration to the stunt drivers. But remember to stay out of the fast ***s to your left! Tip 9: Set your cruise control (unless you're in mountains) at the speed limit, and take it easy on those foot pedals. At your destination Tip 10: Use manpower. Walk a little farther. Ride a bike. Go on walking tours. Take public transportation when visiting a city (sometimes it's even cheaper). Take a hotel shuttle or share taxis with other travelers. Plan your sightseeing for efficient use of transportation or walking routes. ...More
