One Good Idea, One Bad Idea
Aug. 10, 1897: A German chemist named Felix Hoffman becomes a hero nobody knows when he creates a stable form of acetylsalicylic acid. Two years later his company, Bayer, patents it under the name "aspirin." Hoffman also creates a substance trademarked as "heroin," used to treat heavy coughs and the pain of childbirth.
