Editor's Corner: Gutenberg Was Served!
In the West, we hear about Gutenberg's printing press so much that it's easy to forget he wasn't the first to come up with movable type. That distinction goes to Bi Sheng, who created a system using reusable clay pieces sometime around 1041 -- 400 years before Herr Gutenberg.
Last Friday, China reminded us that Europe didn't come first. The 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies were not only spectacular; they were chockablock with imagery dear to a creative pro's heart. How about that combination of human-powered movable type and digitally powered paper, both spelling out the same message at the same time? I'm still glowing from it.
If you missed the opening ceremonies, stop working right now and go watch it. Tell everyone in earshot it's OK due to the educational nature of the content. (Toss out that 1041 date.) Windows users can watch the ceremony video at www.nbc.com. Mac users may have to be content with slideshows and short clips on YouTube, but even the stills are inspiring.
