Hey Shanghai!

Well it's finally upon us. After years of planning, preparations, and protests -- the controversies, the countdowns, the heroes, and the hype -- it's finally HERE:

"The Mummy III: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" is now in theatres in the States and speeding its way to Shanghai to be with us at our newly-reopened (mostly) black market DVD stands...

See what I did there? That's called the 'bait and switch.' BAM!

Well, if we must talk about the Olympics, so be it. Legally, I don't think you're allowed to not give a shit...

I have to say, though, anticipating this Opening Ceremony takes me right back to New Years Eve 1999. Seriously. Everyone thinks its going to be a big deal which it probably won't be, expects awful things to happen (Y2K?), and doesn't know whether to go out and force themselves to get drunk and have a good time or just stay home with a book and ignore the whole thing.

And it's in this half-hearted, New Year's Eve-ish spirit that you'll get your text messages tonight. You'll have your friends that are making way too big a deal of it -- thinking its going to be the best shit ever -- planning all kinds of things, when you know in your heart it's going to suck .... , and you'll have you're friends that are hiding in their apartments, having two drinks and then going to bed.

And there you are caught in the middle.

If you end up going with your friends from category A, I've got some suggestions for you -- that is, unless they haven't already planned some wack Olympics Opening Ceremony party that you can't get out of.

So apparently, everyone wants to go down to the Bund for the Olympics, because it's the patriotic Shanghai thing to do. Virtually every bar on the Bund is doing something: Ben Huang's put something together at Bar Hulu that wouldn't be out of place at LOgO (Ben Huang, Fish, Ozone DJing and VJs as well), Glamour Bar has a good one with Olympics deco and a burlesque dance troop (article here, yow-za!), De la Coast has your beer garden Olympics party, and New Heights will surely get the crowd out for theirs.

And there is always .... I Love Shanghai, who, of course, celebrate every cultural event large or small, by dutifully trying to drink themselves into oblivion. Beer Olympics at ILS for the true sporting buff.

But let's do some housekeeping here: The Shelter is shut down by the fuzz for being a basement, but other basement venues, particularly MURAL BAR is not. So feel free to cop their 100rmb all-you-can-drink deal.

Sky Club in The New Factories is now open and tomorrow's Antidote party has been relocated to the new Bulldog, which is an interesting choice and I'm looking forward to seeing the drunk kids hang with the drunk dads. I think I've been to that wedding before ....

And don't forget "More than Jazz" on Sunday. Quality experimental, improvisational jazz (article here, tickets here).

And finally, TONIGHT is the last night you'll have the pleasure of a drink or two at La Bella -- one of the nicer cafes in town (some say nicest, and they have a good case).

La Bella is open tonight for the last night, so head on down for 2-for-1 drinks and give it up to Isabella and Rob.
