Not sure "vanity" and "stupidity" are necessarily the right words here. I would have said "pride" and "satisfaction". I'd personally classify fiction writers under the same banner as painters, musicians/singers and poets, i.e. the majority of them will never be rich but have satisfaction in having their "art" appreciated, which gives them a sense of pride. Stephen King and U2 (for example) may not achieve their greatest sales over the internet but that's really looking at it from the wrong angle. If the person has enough money to be able to afford to publish themselves, or indeed spends little via the lulu.com route, and sells a handful of books, and gets a handful of praise back, then I guess that must be a lovely feeling, giving them a sense of acheivement most of us would envy. They may wish to be rich and famous one day, but i guess a "great book" or "fantastic voice" comment must make them very happy indeed. Think I've covered at least 3 of the deadly sins here!! :o)

Stephen King is one example, certainly, but that doesn't prove that there is *no* value in self-publishing fiction online.

To take a few counter-examples, both Charlie Stross and Cory Doctorow release their fiction for free, online - and they've managed to become reasonably successful genre writers, and sell plenty of hard copies of their work. Publishing online serves to create interest in their work, and develop their market.

Hiya,
Interesting conversation - replying to the original enquiry.
If it were me, I think I might suggest to the author doing a bit of research on what Raider have published and how well the books were marketed, sold etc. A look at some of their recently published books might yield contact emails for an author(s) who had been published by Raider so that your enquirer could ask how the experience had been for them, directly.

I am writing from Northern Ireland and I don't know the funding situation in Zimbabwe for the arts. Here there are awards from the Arts Council NI for individual artists but these would help, for example, a writer to buy time to write / edit their writing.. or in any case support the process of producing. The Arts Council also provide some funding for local publishers (which means that authors would be benefitting from this when they had been taken on by a publisher but couldn't apply directly for this support). A check of the enquirer's local situation would be more useful, of course.

That said, ordinarily, you wouldn't expect to pay for the privilege of having a publisher publishing your work - from which they will, all being well, profit. I would advise being really clear about the benefits of this before parting with any money and considering the alternatives, should this amount to a pernicious form of self-publishing (where the author is reeled in as 'selected'), as others have discussed here.

For what it's worth, despite the difficulty in getting an agent (never mind a publisher) all my novelist friends have opted to go this route.

I wish the author every success with his novel.

Every good wish
Olive

There is also a growing interest in POD or print on demand, with a website at http://www.proprint.com.au/Find/pod.aspx having more information. While the Internet hasn't yet assisted with the distribution of new fiction (I speak from experience! My fictional historical diary at http://davidpovey.blogspot.com achieved a very small readership) it has distributed vast numbers of books via Gutenberg and similar on-line libraries.

Hi,

I suggest you take a look at the Solicitors' Accounts Rules which can be found at http://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/code-of-conduct/accounts-rules.page

It is clear that a solicitor must have a client account completely separate from the "office" account but you will need to check through the relevant rules relating to client accounts (Part B) to see whether use of this account for Trust monies is permitted.

Hi, I work in environmental marketing and I've found a resource that's probably worth a look... I'm looking for similar ones too for a report I'm doing.

As most businesses at the moment are trying to become more environmentally friendly, it's well worth having an employee or group of employees take a course in this area. The Environmental Academy also have an online course that's inexpensive and will give you an NCFE qualification. I did it recently and just got my certificate and think it could be worth a lot in my future job hunting!

Anyway I recommend you take a look if you're looking into becoming more 'green' - http://www.environmental-academy.co.uk

Anyone else have any comments about this one? or any similar resources?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Peter

There are lots of these types of packages. Nud*ist, NVivo are widely used.

This website from the University of Huddersfield's Dept of Behavioural Science lists software available and does some comparisons.

Hello Free pinters

I'm looking to source stats on social networking sites, particularly for myspace and how many bands are registered on there.

Found plenty of figures on various blogs but without any indication as to the source of them, so I'm a little suspicious as to their accuracy.

Anyone aware of any good sources or companies (free or chargeable) whether this info can be sourced from?

Many thanks

FreePint 258 has been published and is available at

http://www.freepint.com/issues/

In this issue:

* 'Search Beyond the Web: When to Pick Up the Phone.' Online search has come to dominate the information world, but there's one 19th century tool no researcher should be without - the telephone. Risa Banks reminds us of ten situations in which picking up a phone and talking to someone in person is far more effective than any other search tool.

* 'Experiencing Information: A Personal View of the 2008 Information Architecture Summit'. Reporting from the 2008 Information Architecture Summit in Miami, Helen Lippell provides highlights of the lively and informative show focused on 'experiencing information.' As IA plays an increasingly critical role in providing information context and connections, participants learned more about how search and discoverability and the connections between digital and physical search are changing IA today.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a hard copy (in Braille) of the German Braille code as used in Germany, and not the UK? Apparently there are differences between the two. Also does anyone know of any magazines in German Braille that can be subscribed to?

Thanks in advance,
