Dear Criss,

This has been a fun, exciting and busy summer. My family, friends and work took me to many different places these past months. I spent more time out-of- town than in-town.

It seemed that no one in my family was home much (okay, I was gone more than anyone else) - but, my kids also got to do a little traveling to make the summer even better. Ashley had volleyball - she traveled to Dallas, TX and San Diego - what fun trips for her and then my son Tyler was out golfing all over the State of California......wish I could have made it to Carmel with him.....maybe next year.

It's hard to believe that the summer is almost over for the kids - I'm going to try and get at least one weekend away with all of us together before the end of August!

The month of August is filled with classes - I will be teaching several here at my studio in Fresno, as well as one in Portland, Oregon.

Hope that you enjoy this newsletter filled with many subjects and even a "free" recipe to create with!

Creatively Yours, Jennifer R Ferguson

SALI Convention 2008 - Charleston, SC
 Pictures and Reviews

Well, if you missed SALI 2008 - I just have to say you missed a great convention! As always, it is so great to see all your friends from far away places - get caught up on life and just have fun.

My group (me, Pam Poole, Travis Poole and Melissa Ortiz) arrived in SC on Sunday night and started off the week with a wonderful dinner with lots of friends. (The restaurant even put our group in a private room - maybe they were trying to tell us something....too loud)! Food was fabulous, downtown Charleston was lots of fun and the weather was very humid (I'm not used to the humidity).

I planned the week to come in a day early so that we could see some of Charleston and relax for a day & half - but we just tried to shove so much into the beginning of the week, that we were tired before the real work began. Shopping and shopping and lots of walking downtown........that's work!

Classes were wonderful - I had two classes that I co- taught with Krista Vind and the group of students we had were wonderful! We accomplished more than was possible and everyone had a collection of great sample boards. I finished off the week with a relaxed "cloud" painting class on Friday afternoon - what a great group that was!

When I wasn't teaching a class - I was either setting up or working my booth at the Expo. The Expo was wonderful this year - many familiar faces and lot's of new ones. Our vendor "family" spends many hours together in the Expo and we have a great group of companies that all support each other.

Hope that you will start saving and come join us next year for a fabulous Convention 2009, Memphis, TN!!!

(Friends in the photo - bottom row - Paula, Jennifer, Elias, ME and Camilla (also known as Tinkerbell) - top row Daniel and Ro (our convention shutterbug). The picture was from the last night of convention @ the banquet - an evening saying good-bye until next year!

SALI/IDAL

 Las Vegas Job Site
 World Market Center

I had a wonderful opportunity to work on a job site @ the World Market Center in Las Vegas, NV. This was a get in and get out as fast as you can kind of job - but, Alisha and I made the most of it.......and often couldn't stop laughing (maybe we were just so tired everything was funny)!

Central Distributing of Fresno is the company that opened the Showroom @ the World Market Center and the wife of one of the owners has been a student and friend for a while (Alisha). We figured out a wonderful color palette and several different finishes that we thought we could pull-off in the time frame we had.

We decided that all front window displays would have a custom colored LusterStone finish and all the other vignette walls would be glazed in a Metallic finish that complimented the LusterStone color.

As always - this was way more work than the two of us could complete. We hired a wonderful painter (via a good friend in Vegas - Thanks Barth!) and he accomplished all the preparation for the walls. Alisha and I worked from sun up to way past sun down and even with the long hours - I still didn't complete everything I wanted to before I had to leave Vegas.

Alisha was a trouper - she still had many walls left to glaze when I had to leave (I had to go to Dallas, TX the next day). There was at least 2500 sq ft of wall space left for her to complete.......WOW that's a big job!

The World Market Center was opening during the week of July 28th and from what I understand it was a very successful week. If you ever get the chance to go see this place, it is incredible - larger than words can describe - but it's everything in Las Vegas.

 Recipe of the Month
 Basic Cabinet Stain & Glaze

Many of us have those wonderful "oak" cabinets still in our kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, etc. Here is a great finish to transform them into a look that will update your room and save a lot of money.

Remove all doors, drawers from the cabinet bases and make sure to mark each door (I normally create a diagram of the kitchen and number the doors, drawers accordingly). Then you will need to remove all the hardware (I put the hardware in baggies and number the bag to the door/drawer number).

Now the fun begins - I just sand down the old finish using a "palm hand sander" and sand paper. I make sure that I have removed any loose particles and have broke through the old finish (you don't have to remove everything). I also scrub them down with TSP to remove all the years of "grime". Make sure to wash them down with straight water after they are cleaned and than let them dry out completely.

Once the doors, drawers and cabinet bases are sanded, cleaned and dry - we are ready to start the real fun! The following process is for re-staining to a darker finish.

  • Apply two layers of the DuraSeal Sanding Sealer to all surface areas. Allow the first coat to dry before apply the second layer - lightly sand in between if needed.
  • Create a Custom Stain using Stain & Seal American Walnut (75%) & Rich Brown (25%) - add approximately 20% FX Thinner for workability.
  • Brush Custom Stain mixture onto surface with foam brush and remove excess with Cheesecloth. Work from the center panel outwards.
  • Allow the first layer of Stain to dry minimum of 4 hours and then apply a second layer for added depth.
  • Create a glaze mixture: 1 cup of AquaCreme to 1 tbs of FauxCremeColor Van Dyke Brown.
  • Brush glaze mixture onto surface using a foam or chip brush and wipe back excess with Cheesecloth. Allow glaze mixture to stay heavier in recessed areas.
  • Allow to dry at least overnight and apply clear coat for protection.
  • Varnish Plus is the product I recommend for all cabinet finishes. This product can be brush, rolled or sprayed.
  • Apply minimum of two coats of Varnish Plus on all surface areas.

Tips: Cabinet finishes are time consuming - but well worth the effort. Make sure you have set-up space to allow cabinet doors/drawers a place to dry before flipping them over for the other side. Always start with the back of the doors first and make sure to check edges, that you are not getting product on the other side.

Dark Finishes: If creating a very dark finish - it is recommended that you apply a Satin or Gloss finish and a sprayed finish will be best. The lower sheen top coats can "haze" dark colors.
