Rethinking the Enterprise PC: Is the Time Right to Go Diskless?
The management costs of PCs, in particular, can represent a significant portion of overall IT spending, and in many cases, those costs -- unlike PC purchase prices -- continue to rise. In many cases, organizations are looking to one of the many variants of server-based computing architectures that are now available. The result -- in theory at least -- is the best of all worlds. IT departments gain the benefits of having a centralized, secure environment where they can keep close tabs on operating system and application updates, as well as corporate data, and users can continue to work in an environment in which they feel comfortable and productive.
