PENTIUM M SOC TAKES WING
Intel has launched a system-on-chip (SoC) processor that integrates
typical northbridge and southbridge functions with a Pentium M core
clocked up to 1.2GHz. Targeting storage, networking, automotive, and
industrial applications, the single-chip Intel EP80579 (formerly
"Tolapai") optionally boasts an ultra-highspeed FPGA co-processor
interface dubbed "QuickAssist."

CITRIX SPINS OFF ARDENCE REAL-TIME BUSINESS
Ardence's embedded software business has changed hands again, with
Citrix selling it off to a group led by "senior" Ardence executives.
IntervalZero will continue to sell the ETS RTOS (real-time OS), Select
"instant on" utility, and RTX, touted as the first-ever real-time
extension for Windows XP and XP Embedded.

SAMSUNG NUDGES UMPC TO 1.3GHZ
Samsung has announced an "ultra premium" version of its Q1 ultra-mobile
PC (UMPC). Equipped with a six-cell battery, the new 1.9-pound Q1 Ultra
Premium-V runs Windows Vista Business on a 1.33GHz Core Solo, with
peripherals that include WiFi, Bluetooth, dual cameras, and a
fingerprint reader.

SUB-$100 MINI-LAPTOP RUNS WINDOWS
Hong Kong-based Join Tech announced a device claimed to be the first
sub-$100 mini-laptop. The J-Pro JL7100 has an 800 x 480 display, 64MB of
RAM and 64MB of flash storage, and runs Windows CE 5.0 on a 400MHz
Samsung processor.

ATOM-BASED NETBOOK SPORTS CONVERTIBLE DISPLAY
Gigabyte has announced an Intel-Atom based netbook with a swiveling, 8.9
inch touchscreen display. The M912 comes with Windows Vista or XP Home,
includes a 1.6GHz N270 processor, has a 2.5-inch hard drive with 160GB
of storage, sports a webcam, and has 802.11b wireless, says Gigabyte.

CAR PC PUTS ATOM IN SINGLE DIN SLOT
Portwell has introduced an interesting Intel Atom-based PC aimed at
in-car entertainment. The PCS-8230 fits into a single DIN slot, offers
TV tuner, WiFi, and GPS modules, has a SDIO slot and a 2.5-inch hard
drive bay, and delivers six channels of analog audio, says Portwell.

NANO SMASHES ATOM, REVIEWERS SAY
Via's new Nano processor outperforms Intel's Atom by about 20 percent,
according to articles published this week by three hardware enthusiast
websites. But, while both CPUs draw approximately the same power when
idling, the Nano drinks a lot more juice when loaded, the reviewers added.
