Fractured NASCAR Nursery Rhymes
by: Robyn Snell
OK, everyone's been taking the "Silly Season" waaaay too seriously, so senior staff writer Robyn Snell came up with a VERY tongue-in-cheek set of NASCAR nursery rhymes to help lighten things up a bit ….

Stewart Involved In Altercation
Two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart expects to be fined by the U.S. Auto Club for an "altercation" with an official during Thursday night's race at O'Reilly Raceway Park. The incident occurred after points leader Tracy Hines, who drives for one of Stewart's two National Midget teams, got into the wall and there wasn't a track official or push truck present to help get the car back in the race. Hines' crew reportedly attempted to change a right rear flat and get him back into the race before another restart. As the crew pushed the car to the front of the straightaway, a USAC official indicated it was too late. Stewart then came down to pit *** to get an explanation for the call. He reportedly knocked the headset from the official's head and then shoved him.
...MoreTruex Will Re-Sign With DEI
Martin Truex Jr., who has been speculated as a candidate for every driver opening in the Sprint Cup garage, isn't going anywhere. The 28-year-old New Jersey native has agreed in principle to a two-year deal that will keep him at Dale Earnhardt Inc. through the 2010 season, multiple sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sources said an official announcement is expected any day, and that details with multiple sponsors remain to be finalized. Truex, asked if he has an agreement, said: "We're getting there, yeah. Things are going well right now. I'm pretty happy. I just want to think about racing this weekend." The deal ends speculation that Truex will leave the company he has been with since making the move from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Nationwide Series team in 2004.

_NASCAR Now Sunday Night Edition Returns: NASCAR Now, ESPN2's daily news and information show, will bring back its Sunday evening weekend wrap-up program with a one-hour edition airing at 10pm/et on Sunday, July 27. The program will report on the weekend's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Nationwide Series race at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis.
Tires could be an issue at Indy UPDATE: Tire wear could be a serious issue in the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Sunday based on the problems some of the Sprint Cup teams were having in the two practice sessions Saturday afternoon. Right-side tires were wearing down to the cords for some teams after only five or six laps on the 2.5-mile quad-oval. All the teams will receive an extra set of tires for the race -- 10 instead of nine -- as needed. NASCAR officials plan to throw a competition yellow
Sunday after about 15 laps. "The track is pretty abrasive and wears down tires pretty fast," Goodyear director of racing Greg Stucker told ESPN. "We've seen this new car is a little tougher on right-side [tires] because it transfers more weight." Another problem Saturday was the lack of rubber laid down on the track from the cars making laps. The dust and tiny rubber pieces from the tires were accumulating on the bumper of the cars rather than staying on the track. More rubber on the track adds grip and makes it easier for the cars to turn. A few teams went through four sets of tires in practice Saturday. Teams are given eight sets of tires for practice and qualifying.(ESPN.com)(7-26-2008)
UPDATE: Following are comments from NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin
Pemberton, regarding tires for Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard: "We've got enough tires for Sunday's race and there will be up to 10 sets per team. Not everybody is going to use all of their tires in the last practice session. There may be some teams that keep an extra set behind. There’s only one NASCAR series that's here this weekend, and you don't get a chance to put enough rubber on the track. If you make a tire that lasts during practices, when you get into the race then they have issues with handling. It's always a challenge here. It's a ‘one-off’ tire that Goodyear builds for this place. The track is very abrasive because we don't run on it very often. Goodyear's doing the best they can. It's a situation we do see probably every time that we come here."(NASCAR)(7-27-2008) Comment

Truex to re-sign with DEI? UPDATE 3: Mark Martin’s new deal with Hendrick Motorsports will make it much easier for DEI to re-sign #1-Martin Truex Jr. Early Sunday morning, sources close to Truex Jr. said Martin’s release from the team at the end of the 2008 season would free up more than $8 million dollars. That money now appears to be spearheaded for Truex Jr. DEI has said they have an option on Truex Jr for 2009, an option that Truex Jr has discounted. Mark Martin was being paid more than $8 million dollars to drive part-time according to sources within the DEI organization. Now that Martin has agreed to terms with Hendrick Motorsports to drive the #5 car full-time next season and part-time in 2010, this money has become available for Truex Jr. Sources said DEI and Truex Jr. are closer than ever to announcing a contract extension that would lock in the New Jersey native through 2012 in
the #1 car.(Captain Thunder Racing)(7-8-2008)
UPDATE: According to sources close to Martin Truex Jr., Dale Earnhardt, Inc.(DEI) and Truex Jr. have come to a verbal agreement on a contract extension that would ink the #1 Bass Pro Shop driver through the 2011 Sprint Cup Season. Truex Jr., according to sources, had serious conversations with new team owner Tony Stewart of Stewart HAAS Racing about joining Stewart. The money simply was not there. Truex Jr. was intrigued by teaming with two-time Sprint Cup champion Stewart, but the money DEI has now offered the young flagship driver is too much to pass up. Truex Jr. and DEI are attempting to work out the final details of the contract, which are said to be minuscule, in time for an announcement next week in Long
Pond, PA.(Capt Thunder)(7-22-2008)
UPDATE 2: Martin Truex Jr., who has been speculated as a candidate for every driver opening in the Sprint Cup garage, isn't going anywhere. The 28-year-old New Jersey native has agreed in principal to a two-year deal that will keep him at Dale Earnhardt Inc. through the 2010 season, multiple sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sources said an official announcement is expected any day, and that details with multiple sponsors remain to be finalized. Truex, asked if he has an agreement, said: "We're getting there, yeah. Things are going well right. I'm pretty happy. I just want to think about racing this weekend." He has been linked most strongly with the #12 car at Penske
Racing,#4 at Stewart-Haas Racing and #33 at Richard Childress Racing. The organization also is negotiating a long-term deal to keep #15-Paul Menard, who has improved from 34th in the point standings last season to 26th. Max Siegel, the president of global operations at DEI, would not comment on negotiations. But Siegel has been emphatic that Truex was a driver he wanted to build the company around.(ESPN.com)(7-26-2008)
UPDATE 3: Martin Truex Jr. said Saturday after Sprint Cup practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that a published report saying he had reached an agreement in principle to remain at Dale Earnhardt Inc. for two years was not true. Though Truex may well drive for DEI next season, his immediate reaction when asked about the story that appeared on ESPN.com was:
"It's [expletive]. I don't know what the hell [the reporter] is talking about. He doesn't know what he's talking about." Truex said he has been involved in fruitful negotiations with DEI's management. "We've been talking a lot," Truex said. "Things have been going well. We're working on some stuff, and that's what I told him." John Story, DEI's vice president of motorsports operations, indicated he has been involved in every aspect of the negotiations and declined comment on the assertions in the story.(NASCAR.com)(7-27-2008) Comment here
